Michaelangelo Pistoletto (1933 Biella, Italien) (F)'Cappio', screen print in colours on mirrored foil, 1973, 82.5 cm x 59 cm sheet size, signed, numbered 36/130, some minor surface scratches scratches, some small round dentsProvenance: Private collection Hanover''As long as you don't commit suicide, you're an optimist.'' (Michelangelo Pistoletto)Michelangelo Pistoletto was born in Biella, Italy, in 1933. He made his first contact with the art world in 1947 in his father's restoration workshop, where he worked until 1958. The painter, action artist, sculptor and art theorist is considered the main representative of the Arte Povera style and for years has held up a mirror to the viewer, himself and the art market - always with a grin. He began to produce figurative works and self-portraits in the 1960s and during this decade he also began applying them to monochrome, metallic backgrounds. Later he also combined painting with photography by applying photo collages to reflective backgrounds. For this purpose, he sometimes uses concave or convex distorting mirrors as backgrounds for his works. The mirror as a material and substrate appears throughout his work in numerous forms and variations. The consistency with which Pistoletto pursued his artistic course did not go unnoticed: In the mid-1960s, the U.S. gallery owner Ileana Sonnabend became aware of his works and brought them to the attention of a wider audience. In the ''Minus Objects'' shown from 1966, he dealt with the possible alienation of everyday and artistic objects in an exhibition setting, often questioning the conventional notion of value in art. From this time onward, he participated in important international exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale (1966 to 2005) and the documenta in Kassel (1968 to 1997). In 1967 he received first prize at the Sao Paolo Biennial. According to Pistoletto, everything revolves around knowledge, around art as a place of reflection. Always influenced by politics, he emphasized the maximum responsibility of an artist, arising from his maximum freedom. However, Pistoletto was never concerned with self-reflection, but rather with the shifting of perspective, that of the viewer on himself. His works are about his own perception in the context of his surroundings, with regard to the current situation, but also in respect to the past. The serigraph ''Cappio'' was created after the 1973 mirror work of the same name, and it is as simple as it is haunting. Using simple materials was always Pistoletto's main concern. Art and everyday life were to merge. The simple rope, tied into a noose. If you hang the serigraph framed on the wall and look at the picture, your own head hangs in the loop. Inevitably, one embarks upon a journey to oneself and one's psychological stability. The work examines the central themes of the relationship between image and reality, and the shift in the viewer's perspective.
