Steve Ferguson (American, B. 1946) "Curtiss F8C-1 Helldiver Airplane" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover with the U.S. 29c Flag stamp issued November 1, 1991. Between the World Wars, America was able to make much progress in its military technology. One fine example of this was the F8C Helldiver, the first production Navy aircraft designed for dive bombing. The biplane soon replaced the DH-4 Liberty Plane. The Helldiver could pull off steep dives upon target ships, dropping a single 500-pound bomb or twin 116-pound bombs. At the time, the plane was the only two-seat aircraft in the Navy's fighter squadrons. Some, like those delivered to the carrier U.S.S. Saratoga in August 1930 were welcome additions to the ship's arsenal. The plane could hit targets far out at sea and return to the carrier. The importance of its part in aircraft development cannot be denied since sea-launched planes would play a crucial role in the coming Second World War. Image Size: 16.5 x 14 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B13274)

Steve Ferguson (American, B. 1946) "Polikarpov I-15 Gull" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 32c Polikarpov I-15 Gull stamp issued November 1, 1996. In late 1935, a specially modified, stripped-down Soviet Polikarpov I-15 Gull was flown by test pilot Vladimir Kokkinaki to an altitude of 47,806 feet, setting a new world altitude record by a tenth of a mile. Image Size: 16.5 x 14 in. Overall Size: 20.25 x 15 in. Unframed. (B15490)

Lot 471

Steve Ferguson (American, B. 1946) "Piper Cub" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 32c Cub Classic Collection Series stamp issued July 19, 1997. In 1937 the Taylor Aircraft Company was reorganized as the Piper Aircraft Corporation at Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, with William T. Piper as president. The company was soon producing a light, high-wing monoplane called the Piper Cub. By the end of 1941, Piper had manufactured 10,000 of the popular side-by-side, two-seater planes. During World War II, the Cub, which could fly at grasstop height and land almost in its own length, was turned out by the thousands to meet the demand for frontline observation aircraft. Known in the military as L-4Bs -- or Grasshoppers -- the 65hp Cubs were even being fitted with bazooka rockets by 1944 for use as "tankbusters." Image Size: 16.25 x 14 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B15609)

Lot 472

Steve Ferguson (American, B. 1946) "Alpha" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 32c Alpha Classic Collection Series stamp issued July 19, 1997. In 1928, Jack Northrup left his job with Lockheed and started his own airplane company. Northrup's first plane appeared in 1930, a speedy, six-passenger, cabin monoplane called the Alpha. Designed to be used as a mail and passenger carrier for TWA, the streamlined, low-winged, single-engine plane was made entirely of metal -- unusual for the time. Covered with stressed-skin duralumin, the Alpha sported one of the strongest and most resilient wings in all of aviation. The unique wing was designed with internal multicellular construction, consisting of aluminum spars and ribs that formed a series of small, rigid compartments or cells -- much like those of a honeycomb. Image Size: 16.5 x 14 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B15610)

Lot 475

Steve Ferguson (American, B. 1946) "F-105D Thunderchief" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 32c F-105 Thunderchief stamp issued November 10, 1995. Entering service in the late 1950s, the F-105 Thunderchief was an important aircraft used by the U.S. in Vietnam. It flew hundreds of raids against North Vietnam from 1965 to 1970. Image Size: 16.5 x 14 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B13855)

Lot 479

Steve Ferguson (American, B. 1946) "JN-3 Jenny" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 32c Jenny Classic Collection Series stamp issued July 19, 1997. The end of World War I made thousands of war-surplus airplanes available at bargain prices -- and there were just as many war-trained pilots who wanted to continue flying. At San Diego's Rockwell Field, in 1919, a permanent forest fire patrol was established, equipped with surplus Curtiss Jennies. During the 1920s, the reliable biplane was also a favorite of barnstormers. These daring pilots flew around the country giving stunt flying exhibitions at county fairs and carnivals. In 1924 the Curtiss Exhibition Company flew 100,000 miles -- much of it in Jennies -- conducting aerial photography, carrying passengers, making deliveries and instructing new pilots. Image Size: 16.5 x 13.75 in. Overall Size: 20.25 x 15 in. Unframed. (B15486)

Lot 480

Tom Lydon (American, B. 1944) "Peace Protecting Genius Sculpture" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card for the U.S. 19c Official Mail stamp issued May 24, 1991. The year was 1791 and the United States was only a few years old when French engineer Pierre-Charles L'Enfant completed his layout plans for the capital city of the young nation. L'Enfant was a visionary with a strong bent for Baroque landscape architecture; even then he planned for a capital city based upon fifty states and 500,000,000 citizens. The central point of his elaborate plan was the U.S. Capitol Building. The building was designed so that it had a broad vista down a long expanse of park known as The Mall. Although many of L'Enfant's original designs were not incorporated into the Washington, D.C. of today, the city is among the most beautiful in the world and the U.S. Capitol is still its central point. The building is an emblem of democracy and a work of art in its own right. A fine example is the Apotheosis of Democracy, a sculpture on the east front of the House Pediment. This artwork was based upon a portion of the colossal sculpture and depicts Peace Protecting Genius. Peace stands before an olive tree, her right arm symbolically protecting Genius, who rests at her feet and holds the torch of Immortality. Carved from Georgia White marble, the sculpture was completed in 1916 by Paul Wayland Bartlett to adorn the great building of democracy. Image Size: 11.5 x 15.75 in. Overall Size: 15 x 20 in. Unframed. (B12978)

Basil Smith (British, B. 1925). "R.M.S. Yare" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor/Mixed Media painting on Hot Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood Trains & Boats & Planes & More Collection Description Card for the Yare. One of the first of the so-called "ocean stagecoaches" built in the 1840s to carry mail between British colonies, the R.M.S. Yare actually served a variety of purposes. First and foremost she was, as her named implied, a carrier for the Royal Mail. In order to provide the most reliable service possible among the scattered islands of the West Indies, the Yare and her fourteen sister ships were equipped with steam-powered paddle wheels as well as a complete sailing rig. These hybrids, all named after British rivers, chugged through the Caribbean at speeds averaging eight knots; a copper-plated hull protected them from the ravages of the tropical toredo worm. But, in the days when the sun never set on the British flag, the Royal Navy was spread thin and the British Admiralty was more concerned about the ravages of hostile nations than the ravages of nature. For this reason they insisted the steamers carry a variety of small arms, including muskets, pistols, and pikes. Furthermore, their decks were specially reinforced to enable them to carry heavy cannon in the event of a war. TheYare was never forced to do battle at sea. Image Size: 6 x 7 in. Overall Size: 9 x 10 in. Unframed. (B07225)

Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "Thank You" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 22c Thank You! stamp issued April 20, 1987. Thank You! How many times have we said it in our lives. How many times should we have, but didn't. And, how many times have we been pleased to hear it said sincerely. These two simple, succinct words can add a whole new dimension to relationships. Friendships have been cemented by a simple "Thank you for being my friend." Marriages have been built on a "Thank you for your love and for being there." And great, lasting loves have been founded on a "Thank you for just being you." Sometimes just a "Thank you for thinking of me," lets people know that you care, too. And often, just a simple "Thank you" can cover a multitude of situations from the special to the mundane: an unexpected old friend arrives to help celebrate at a wedding ... a seat on a bus courteously offered ... a borrowed book returned ... the salt properly passed at dinner. We are so lucky to have words such as these at our disposal to express our sincerest gratitude. This artwork makes that statement by use of bright colors and large, bold letters, reminding someone special of your gratitude with every glance. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B10261)

Lot 490

Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "Happy Birthday Packages" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 22c Happy Birthday stamp issued April 20, 1987. A toddler sits with legs dangling in his high-chair surrounded by doting relatives ... an elderly woman stands to thank those friends and loved ones who have remembered her once more. Birthdays ... what special days! Days to celebrate the simple joy of being alive. And a day we can enjoy indulging in being fussed over: the cake complete with candles, the lovingly wrapped gifts, the phone calls from near and far, all from those who care and thoughtfully remember our very special day. Birthdays, of course, also mean a certain extra interest in the daily mail. Whether we are celebrating our own birthday, or the birthday of someone dear to us receiving and sending birthday cards is a meaningful way to express our love and best wishes. This artwork carries the birthday theme in a clever, colorful assortment of packages, each bearing a letter of the message everyone gets to hear once every year. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B10263)

Lot 491

Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "Organ of the Baroque" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Combination Cover for the Germany Baroque Composers stamps issued March 19, 1985. The Baroque was a time of a great intensification of past forms in all the arts: painting saw the works of Vermeer, Rubens, Rembrandt, and El Greco -- in literature it was the time of Moli?re, Cervantes, Milton, and Racine -- modern science came into its own during this period with the work of Galileo and Newton. In music, the age began with the trail-blazing works of Claudio Monteverdi, continued with the phenomenally popular music of Antonio Vivaldi and the keyboard works of such composers as Francois Couperin and Domenico Scarlatti, and came to a close with the masterworks of two of the veritable giants of music history, Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel. Image Size: 12 x 14 in. Overall Size: 15 x 20 in. Unframed. (B09583)

Lot 492

Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "Red Admiral Butterfly" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. In the 18th century, vivid markings earned this attractive butterfly the name "admirable," a moniker from which its modern name was derived. Not only colorful, but hardy as well, Admiral Butterflies have been seen as far north as the Arctic Circle and as high as 6,000 feet. Territorial and self-sufficient, they often remain in the same place for weeks. Each constructs its own shelter by spinning the leaves of stinging nettle. Image Size: 12 x 14 in. Overall Size: 17.5 x 20 in. Unframed. (B08703)

This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Liechtenstein Europa 1987 Modern Art - Architecture stamp issued May 12, 1987. The tiny principality of Liechtenstein lies between Switzerland and Austria and like its neighbors is an heir to all the majestic beauty of the towering mountains. Liechtenstein shares many customs with Switzerland and the frontier between the two countries is completely open. In addition, Switzerland manages the telephone, postal and telegraph services for Liechtenstein, but the country issues its own stamps. Although it is a small nation, Liechtenstein boasts many beautiful buildings within its borders, including this magnificent structure. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "Congratulations" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood First of Issue Maximum Card for the U.S. 22c Congratulations stamp issued April 20, 1987. Congratulations! Perhaps your red-letter day is a wedding ... the birth of a child ... a new job ... graduation! All are worthy of hearty congratulations. When someone we care about has something worthy of celebration, it's nice to join in the fun, and share the triumph and joy. Whenever good things happen to people we love, it's important to remember them, just as we do when times are difficult. Congratulations can be offered in many ways: a firm handshake from a business associate, a pat on the back from a coach, a gentle kiss on the cheek from grandma, even a great, big bear hug from a long unseen uncle! Always met with a smile, a laugh, perhaps a happy tear, this is one of the best of all sentiments to share. This artwork can serve as a constant reminder of your happiness at someone's success. Image Size: 8.5 x 11.75 in. Overall Size: 15 x 20 in. Unframed. (B10270)

Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "Flowers - Manuscript Illumination" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Combination Cover for the Germany Medieval Manuscript Illumination stamps issued October 15, 1985. Amid a life of prayer, fasting and hard work, the monks of the Middle Ages found time to leave a magnificent artistic legacy for the entire world. Their artform, illumination, allowed the monks to transform simple, hand-copied pages into a treasure of artistry which has been handed down for generations. First came the artistic flourishes to the first letter in a paragraph. Marginal drawings explaining the Holy Scriptures followed and finally the artistic genius of the age burst forth in fantastic marginal landscapes, scrolling, vines, geometric shapes ... all embellished with gold and silver. Image Size: 12 x 14 in. Overall Size: 15 x 20 in. Unframed. (B09833)

Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "Love You Mom" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 22c Love You Mother stamp issued April 20, 1987. From our earliest childhood recollections, to the time we face the world as adults, we realize nothing compares with a mother's love. After all, she's the one who raised us and watched us grow ... dried our tears when we were hurt ... and reassuringly tucked us into bed each night. She's the one we could always count on when we needed to talk to someone. And, perhaps even now, when things just aren't going right, no one can help like our mother. Truly, no one could every take the place "Mom" has earned in our heart. But, all too often, time seems to pass us by and we never seize the opportunity to say the things that ought to be said. Fortunately, sometimes special occasions arise when we can express our love and gratitude to our mother ... a special time set aside to say "Love You, Mother!" This artwork features the words every mother wants to hear: "Love You, Mom" in bold, appealing letters. Whether used for a special Mother's Day gift ... for her nearly forgotten birthday ... or for no special reason, this artwork conveys a message so often thought, yet so seldom said. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B10267)

GEORGE SMITH RSA (SCOTTISH 1870 - 1934),A RURAL SCENEmixed media on board image size 30cm x 39cm, overall size 49cm x 58cm Mounted, framed and under glass.Label verso: Painted by George Smith RSA, Certified by Jessie Smith, his Sister, 1935.Note: George Smith was born on 2nd February 1870 in Mid Calder, a village formerly in the county of Midlothian. He attended George Watson's Boys College in Edinburgh from October 1882 and his formal training as an artist commenced at The Trustees Academy (Edinburgh) in 1885. At the age of nineteen Smith travelled to Antwerp to train under Verlat at Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts d'Anvers. After returning to Edinburgh he enrolled at the Royal Scottish Academy Life School where his fellow students included Samuel J Peploe and Robert Brough. Smith won the Keith Prize (1894) for the best painting by a student of the Life School at the RSA Annual Exhibition. George Smith had his first painting accepted for the RSA Annual Exhibition in 1888 when he was only eighteen years of age and probably uniquely had at least one painting accepted every year for the rest of his life. A total of 122 entries were accepted at the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) until his death on 26th November 1934 and in 1935 a further five were exhibited. He also exhibited 87 paintings at the Royal Glasgow Institute (RGI) between 1892 and 1935. His work was also exhibited at Royal Academy (London), in Liverpool at The Walker Art Gallery, at Manchester and at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin. He also exhibited abroad including at Rome (1911) and at The Munich International Exhibition in 1912. In an issue of "The Studio" in 1908 it stated "in every important art centre from St Petersburg to Paris his work is favourably known". George Smith's considerable commercial success was probably why his style and subject matter of horses or cattle in association with man in a rural environment changed little during his career.
