Weil (Susan).- Joyce (James) Giacomo Joyce, number 2 of 50 copies, signed by the artist, illustrated by Weil with numerous mixed media and paper cuttings, specially bound by Hannah Brown in grey goatskin, decorated with multi-coloured linear embroidery, occasional silver inlays and cut-outs revealing endpapers, spine backed in sanded pink goatskin, endpapers embroidered in variegated thread excerpts from the text, housed in cloth drop-back box, lined with pink felt, folio, New York, Vincent FitzGerald & Co., 1989. *** Susan Weil creates an interactive, multimedia experience for the reader in a manner reflective of reading Joyce’s stream-of-consciousness literature. Hannah Brown's binding in turn draws on Weil's artistry, taking as the basis for its design one of the illustrations within the text, where a sheet of silvery webbed paper with cut-outs overlays a pink sheet behind. Brown captures that motif through her skilful embroidery, her endpapers created by roller-ing acrylic paints in a range of colours onto Zerkall paper to match the colours found throughout the text block, and her care for colour as seen in the stubs and bands and the sanded spine.
