Lot 143

A pair of very large mahogany library bergeresin the Regency style, after Charles Heathcote Tatham and Thomas HopeEach with an outscrolled and dished leaf-carved back above standing griffin-form end supports, with outstretched feather carved wings, terminating in animalistic legs and lion paw feet, 109cm wide x 120cm deep x 119cm high, (42 1/2in wide x 47in deep x 46 1/2in high) (2)Footnotes:Although of recent manufacture, the offered bergeres are after a Regency oak model reputedly supplied to John Aylmer, Courtown House, County Kildare in Ireland, circa 1815, which sold Christie's, London, 7 June 2011, 500 Years Decorative Arts Europe, lot 479. This in turn was most likely inspired by drawings and designs produced by Charles Heathcote Tatham (1772-1842) and Thomas Hope (1769-1831). Three such influential drawings of ancient consular seats, or throne chairs, executed by C.H. Tatham while on the Grand Tour and dating to 1795 and 1799 respectively, are illustrated in Thomas Hope, Regency Designer, ed. by D. Watkin and P. Hewat-Jaboor, 2008, New York, pp.'s 58 & 377, fig.'s 4-1 & 67-1. For further comparison see the Coade stone seat, circa 1800, originally in the picture gallery at Thomas Hope's Duchess Street property, but now at Parham House in Sussex, Ibid, p. 70, fig. 4-16. Whilst a carved mahogany sofa end dating to circa 1802, which is believed to have belonged to Thomas Hope, also appears Ibid p. 377, fig. 67. This itself is virtually identical to the sofa ends which feature in a design for the third vase room from Thomas Hope's major 1807 publication, Household Furniture, Ibid, p. 33, fig. 2-14.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Please note transfer and storage charges will apply to any lots not collected after 14 calendar days from the auction date. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 161

A George IV mahogany breakfront wardrobe attributed to GillowsCirca 1825, the ovolo moulded cornice above a central pair of doors comprising a pair of panels over two short and two long dummy drawers, enclosing a brass hanging rail and an adjustable shelf, flanked to each end by a twin panelled door enclosing a brass hanging rail, on eight turned bun feet, with rosewood handles, 199cm wide x 65cm deep x 221cm high, (78in wide x 25 1/2in deep x 87in high)Footnotes:Two closely comparable wardrobes to the present lot were made by Gillows during the period 1820-1835 and both feature in S.E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Vol II, 2008, Woodbridge, pp.'s 67-69, pl.'s 614 & 615. The first was supplied by the Gillow firm to Charles Herbert Pierrepoint, 2nd Earl Manvers, in 1822 for Thoresby Hall, near Newark in Nottinghamshire. Susan Stuart notes that, due to the relative plainness of this example added to the fact it appears under the heading 'Late Family Bedroom' in the 1822 invoice addressed to Earl Manvers, it was evidently intended for use by someone of lesser status than the Earl's family. Thus, in quotation from Idem, p. 67, Stuart concludes: 'It is just the sort of wardrobe which would have originally graced a judge's bedchamber, which it now occupies in the Judges' Lodgings Museum, Lancaster.'The second wardrobe, which is constructed (as with the offered model) from beautiful mahogany timber of superb quality, was most likely executed by Gillows between 1820 and 1835. However unlike the present version, this is stamped: 'Gillows Lancaster and was probably originally purchased or commissioned by the Spedding family. This is evidently the case since it currently resides at Mirehouse, Buttermere, near Keswick in Cumbria after its re-location from Winter Brow, both of which are Spedding properties Idem, p. 68. Despite all having very similar exterior configurations, perhaps the most interesting difference between these related examples and the above is that the former employs actual drawers to the lower part of the central bay while on the latter there are dummy drawers forming the lower part of the main doors. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Please note transfer and storage charges will apply to any lots not collected after 14 calendar days from the auction date. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 166

A William and Mary kingwood, rosewood, oyster veneered and featherbanded kneehole deskin the manner of Thomas PistorCirca 1690, the hinged foldover top inlaid with segmentally veneered radiating circular, lunette and spandrel tablets, enclosing three drawers, a central open compartment and a hinged secretaire drawer front, above eight short drawers flanking the door to the recess, the door inlaid with a radiating segmentally veneered roundel, enclosing one shelf, on replaced large bun feet, with lozenge inlaid sides, 103cm wide x 64cm deep x 89cm high, (40 1/2in wide x 25in deep x 35in high)Footnotes:A similar oyster veneered 'princeswood' kneehole to the present lot, also circa 1690, is with W.R. Harvey Antiques, Witney, Oxfordshire. Another comparable desk, albeit one with historic provenance to Hotspur of London back in 1945, sold Christie's, London, 25 November 2004, Important English Furniture, lot 11. A further similar model was previously with Rolleston Antiques, Kensington. The radiating oyster veneering on the offered lot relates to that on the aforementioned desks as well as on a kingwood escritoire inscribed: 'Mr Thomas Pistor, Ludgate Hill, London', formerly housed at Buxted Park, East Sussex. This escritoire is visible in a photograph of the drawing room at Buxted Park that formed part of a 1950 article in Country Life magazine. Such oyster veneering is also the dominant characteristic on a kingwood escritoire attributed to Thomas Pistor which sold Bonhams, Knightsbridge, 18 March 2020, lot 355. Interesting by way of comparison is an equally remarkable cabinet on chest, also with W.R. Harvey Antiques. LiteratureC. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, 1700-1840, 1996, Leeds, p. 44. Country Life, 11 August, 1950.D. Harvey, 'Three Piece Suite', www.wrharvey.comThis lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Lot 167

A Regency rosewood and brass inlaid library table attributed to GillowsCirca 1820, with line-inlay, the gilt tooled leather inset top above six short opposing mahogany-lined frieze drawers, with stylised foliate strapwork inlaid angles, on vertical end supports headed with scrolled foliate corbels, terminating in scrolled scallop shell capped and acanthus carved lion paw feet with recessed brass castors, with a ring turned baluster cross stretcher, 168cm wide x 99cm deep x 74cm high, (66in wide x 38 1/2in deep x 29in high)Footnotes:An early Gillows model of end support comparable to that on the present table, with its opposing upper and lower scrolled corbels combined with paw feet, can be found on a design for one of two rosewood sofa tables made for John Gladstone Esq. This drawing which appears in the Estimate Sketch Books, dated 13 April 1813, is also illustrated in S.E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Vol I, 2008, Woodbridge, p. 265, pl. 270.Another drawing, dated 5 September 1821, for a similar rosewood library table to the offered lot likewise features in Gillows' Sketch Books, p. 3126, City of Westminster Archives. Evidently this particular example, which was commissioned by Mr Earle, was most likely executed by the Gillows firm at approximately the same time as the above.Further related sofa tables feature in one of Gillow & Co.'s plans for a library layout, which was provided for H.J. Thompson in 1830, while the business was located at 176 Oxford Street, Ibid, Vol II, 2008, Woodbridge, p.352, pl's. E9 & E10.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Lot 181

A 19th century carved walnut double chairback setteein the George II styleWith a scrolled and shaped toprail and conforming stiles, the twin vase shaped splat above a shaped shoe, with feathered eagle bust carved arms and scroll-edged terminals, the associated drop-in seat upholstered with an 18th century gros and petit-point needlework depicting three figures and various animals within an exotic landscape garden, on three opposing scroll-headed, shell and bellflower pendant clasped cabriole front legs terminating in claw and ball feet, with two splayed rear legs, 154cm wide x 61cm deep x 102cm high, (60 1/2in wide x 24in deep x 40in high)Footnotes:Among several comparable original models to the offered lot, perhaps the most significant one at auction is the James Orrock/Viscount Leverhulme double chairback settee which was originally with Christie's, London, 7th June 2007, Important English Furniture, lot 75 and then subsequently sold Christie's, New York, 30th November 2012, 500 Years Decorative Arts, lot 18. Other notable examples include two which sold Christie's, New York, 27th October 2006, Important English Furniture, lot 103 and Christie's, New York, 7th June 2013, The Connoisseur's Eye, lot 345. A further related early Georgian walnut settee forerunner is illustrated in H. Cescinsky, English Furniture from Gothic to Sheraton, 1937, Garden City Publishing Company, pp.'s 166 & 171. The former has similar feathered eagle bust carved and scroll-edged arm supports to the present settee and its vase shaped splat is of distinctive outline as well. Cescinsky notes that the one featured on page 171, also with distinctive eagles' mask carved arm supports, was formerly at Dudley House, Park Lane in London. This Dudley House model also appears as a lithographic colour plate, when it formed part of the renowned furniture collector Percival Griffith's collection, in R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, Vol. 3, 1954 revised edition, New York, pl. V, p.82.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Another drawing showing a profile view of a comparable bergere features in Thomas Hope, Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807, London, pl. XXVII, No. 5. While the actual mahogany chair itself, which probably formed part of Hope's renowned collection at Duchess Street, appears in Thomas Hope, Regency Designer ed. by D. Watkin & P. Aimé-Jules Dalou, (French, 1838-1902): A bronze figure of 'Baigneuse Avant Le Bain (Bather before the bath)'posthumously cast by the Susse Frères foundryon naturalistic canted rectangular base, signed DALOU Scp and inscribed with foundry mark Susse Frères, Paris, Cire Perdue, brown patination, 14.5cm high approximatelyFootnotes:Recognised today as one of the premier sculptors of 19th century France, Aimé-Jules Dalou was admired for his perceptiveness, free execution, and unpretentious realism and was in his day revered in exactly the same manner as his friend and contemporary Rodin would subsequently be to later generations.Dalou's talent was initially recognised by the French sculptor Jean Baptiste Carpeaux who persuaded his parents to allow him to study sculpture at the Petite Ecole and the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Although the sculptor exhibited at the Paris Salon as early as 1861 he was refused the prestigious Prix de Rome which would have done much to further his career due to his political leanings and his opposition to the government during the Second Empire period. However, his sculpture of 'Daphinis and Chloe' was subsequently purchased by the State after it was shown at the Salon in 1869 and he also won worldwide acclaim with his life-size plaster figure of the 'Embroiderer' at the Salon in 1870 both of which exemplify his interest in the female form.As a result of being a supporter of the Paris Commune whilst curator of the Musee du Louvre under Gustave Courbet, he was forced into a period of self-imposed exile from France in 1871 and made his home in London where he was convicted in his absence by the French Government for his involvement with the Commune and given a life sentence although he was eventually pardoned eight years later.Like his contemporary Edgar Degas, Dalou was fascinated with the subject of the female nude and its commercial potential. As such he used his time in London to work and re-work a series of small models depicting idealised female figure in stages of undress before and after bathing. These figures retain a sensitive personal connection between the sculptor and the sitter usually with specific personalised facial features which is perhaps not surprising considering that his favourite model was also his wife, Irma Vuillier. The bather in the present lot is depicted preparing to enter the water, apparently slightly shuddering as she looks down into the stream below. This model also has an added poignancy as the plaster original which was executed by Dalou in 1899 depicts his wife a year before her death. The shock of her tragic loss was also an undoubted contributing factor to the sculptor's own demise eighteen months later. The original model was purchased from Dalou's daughter Georgette in 1905 and is now in the permanent collection of the Musée du Petit-Palais. A marble version is also thought to have been commissioned in 1899 but its whereabouts are now unknown. No commercial bronze editions of his works were apparently produced during Dalou's lifetime as these were discouraged by the sculptor. As such edition casts were not produced until the period post the sculptors death in 1902, when the executors of the sculptor allowed a number of Dalou's works to be cast in limited editions by the A. A. Hébrard foundry. Later, models were made in larger numbers and in a variety of edition sizes by the Susse Frères foundry.Related Literature:A. Simier, Jules Dalou. SHOOLBRED & CO, 6266', the armchair: 66cm wide, 63cm deep, 100cm high; each side chair: 52cm wide, 53cm deep, 93cm high. (9)Footnotes:ProvenanceThe present lot was supplied to the Congregational Church in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, at some point in the late 19th century or very beginning of the 20th century according to the Church's records. By repute the armchair was used by the Minister of the Church while the remaining eight were for the Church Elders. The model for this set of chairs closely follows a Gillow's design which appears in the Estimate Sketch Books during either the 1880s or 1890s. However since they are also stamped for James Shoolbred & Co. It seems highly probably that they were actually purchased later on from Shoolbred, which operated both as a retailer and cabinet maker even into the 1920s.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue.
