He looks contented and has a good row of teeth.Flying caravan Anon: The pilot looks more airworthy than his craft, which is well equipped with the necessities of a life on wheels. When the string is pulled the caravan dances up and down on the flexible spring, its flippers behaving like wings, the paddles rotating. Most would say it is a gimcrack way to fly, but as long as it is attached to the ceiling, fly it does.Money Box: The bank teller stamps the paying-in book as the coin, inserted in the slot on the floor in front of his counter, falls into the box (helped on its way by a notched roller). It is all before the time of ATMs but is a form of automation. The bank clerk keeps a wary eye out for crime and turns his watchful head from right to left as he does the stamping. This is a bank you can trust, especially in Mexico.Provenance:Watermelon Eater: Purchased, Cabaret Mechanical Theatre, London, December 2002. Exhibited, Out of the Box, Air Gallery, London, December 2002.Flying Caravan: Gift, 1995.Money Box, Purchased, Frivoli, Chiswick, London, May 1999.Roseberys do not guarantee the working order of any automata or toy.
A quantity of plastic toys, mostly late 20th century, to include: Manhattan Bank, clockwork, plastic, paper, boxed, 50cm high; Ernest The Balancing Bear, boxed, 20cm high; Curious George The Balancing Monkey, boxed; Rock'n Flowers by Takara, boxed; and others (lot)Sir Nicholas Goodison noted:Manhattan Bank: The gorilla, presumably King Kong unless one of his associates or relatives, climbs the tower. His mission on this occasion however is to act as a depositor. He holds a coin in his mouth, inserted through the back of his head. When he reaches the 52nd floor he drops the coin into the bank. It is quite a tiresome way of depositing money, but he is persistent and evidently trusts the bank. He seems to have no ambition to go higher or to stand by the flag on top and wave at aeroplanes. Indeed he is prevented from reaching the roof (despite the instructions printed on the box) by anti-gorilla preventative projections on the sides of the building.
