EVA TANGUAYPersonality One Sheet (28" x 41.75"); Stone LithoVery Fine- on Linen Morgan Litho, c.1912This is the sole known copy of an exciting one-sheet for the former star. It is reported that the poster was discovered in a trunk containing Tanguay's possessions, which were sold many years ago. This exquisite stone lithograph poster features the stunning and lively Canadian singer and entertainer, known as "the girl who made vaudeville famous." Produced by J. Morgan & Co. of Cleveland, the poster exhibited border wear, including small chips and creases. It has undergone linen-backing and professional restoration to correct general fold and cross-fold wear, with the borders skillfully airbrushed. The poster serves as a magnificent tribute to the celebrated beauty who captivated the entertainment industry.Audiences had never seen anyone quite like Eva Tanguay before. She was known as the "I Don't Care Girl." Her performances were described as bold, exuberant, outrageous, and flamboyant, capturing the attention of newspapers all over the world. At one point, she was even arrested on stage for breaking the "Sunday Law" by "dancing indecently." Eva's carefree attitude made her stand out from other touring performers of her time, and her striking appearance, wild red curly hair, and elaborate costumes matched her larger-than-life personality. She was the one who wrote the song "I Don't Care," which could arguably be called her best hit. Later, she transitioned into vaudeville and headlined at F. Ziegfeld, Jr.'s Revue on the Follies of 1909 at the famous Palace in New York. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, September 12th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. He was artistically trained at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris. Jonathan became a full time painter in 1986, mostly working in watercolour and collage. He is a keen art teacher, regularly running children’s workshops as well as adult night-classes. It is a testament to his artistic skill that he can convey strong emotion with only the simplest of brushstrokes to represent facial features.

Rachel Howard,  British b.1969 -  Dead Spit (Diptych), 2011;  acrylic, oil and household paint on canvas laid down on board, diptych, 38.2 x 38.2 cm and 25.5 x 25.8 cm (unframed) (2) (ARR)  Provenance:  with Blain|Southern Gallery, London, 36909 (according to the label attached to the reverse);  The Collection of Ralph I. Goldenberg  Note: Howard is considered to be one of the most influential British Contemporary artists of the 21st Century, producing emotionally charged abstract compositions.  In this exemplary mature work, Howard uses household gloss paint, often mixed with acrylic, to speak about the fragility and tragedy of the human condition. The pigment and clear varnish are applied to the edges of the canvas which then, through gravity, spreads downwards to create strong vertical lines. The large scale envelops the viewer in washes and veils of colour, in the tradition of Rothko and the Abstract Expressionists and have been described as 'a psychological and physical battle' by Sue Hubbard. Graduating from Goldsmiths College, London in 1991, Howard would go on to receive The Princes Trust Award in 1992, shortlisted in 2004 for the Jerwood Drawing Prize, and eventually gaining a British Council Award in 2008. During her studies at Goldsmiths, Howard became friends with fellow student Damien Hirst who employed her as his assistant to execute his Spot paintings.Howard was recently the subject of a solo exhibition at  MASS MoCA, Massachusetts, US, and her works are in the collections of the Arts Council Collection, UK, Imperial War Museum, London and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Her work was recently part of the exhibition ‘BIG WOMEN’ at FirstSite, Colchester, curated by fellow Goldsmiths alumni Sarah Lucas, alongside Gillian Wearing and Polly Morgan.

The Calendar, which appears to have been written in a different hand from the rest of the manuscript, refers to a number of saints common in Florentine feast days, including Zenobius, Francis, Reparata, and Leonardo. The renowned bibliophile Charles William Dyson Perrins (1864-1958) was the son of James Dyson Perrins, owner of the Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce factory. He amassed one of the most important book collections in the world, especially strong in medieval illuminated manuscripts. The latter were sold after his death in three major auction sales at Sotheby's between 1958 and 1960. Manuscripts from the Dyson Perrins library now reside in a number of prominent institutions around the world including the Lessing J. Rosenwald Collection at the Library of Congress.'Perrins was a collector of the vintage and calibre of Yates Thompson, Fairfax Murray and Pierpont Morgan - giants beside whom even Sir Sydney Cockerell and St. John Hornby seem of human size - and one whose place such contemporary collectors of MSS as Dr Martin Bodmer, Mr William S. Glazier and Major J. R. Abbey can hardly aspire to fill... The fact is that the Perrins Collection, which incorporated many Fairfax Murray MSS, is (except for Sir Chester Beatty's, which is now semi-institutionalized in Dublin) the sole survivor of the great MS collections formed during the early years of the century. There are, indeed, fine Renaissance MSS still on the shelves at Holkham and other English and Scottish houses. It is theoretically possible that the Bibliothèque Nationale or the Bodleian or the Morgan Library might go bankrupt and be sold up; but to the extent that any department of bibliophily depends on the periodic return to the market of treasures which nowadays gravitate ever more frequently to institutional ownership, this sale and the two to come may well prove to be not merely a landmark but a terminal.' (The Book Collector, Winter 1958, pp. 354-357).
