Evelyn De Morgan,  British 1855-1919- Study of an uplifted arm; black and coloured chalks on buff paper, bears initial 'M' (upper left) verso, 34 x 22.9 cm. (unframed / mounted). Provenance:  From an album of de Morgan's drawings.  Private Collection, UK. Note:  The present study is a characteristic example of de Morgan's sensitively shaded drawings, revealing the artist's process as he explores the depiction of bodies in movement, in highly-finished studies not only of full figures, but also of their arms, legs, and hands. Indeed, the artist produced a number of arm studies which resemble the present piece, including a work which sold at Sotheby's, New York, on 30 January 2023, lot 708 ($10,080), and another which sold at Christie's, London, on 13 December 2017, lot 9 (£3,250).

Lot 403

Attributed to Luca Bertelli, after Domenico Campagnola,  Italian fl.1564-1589, and Italian 1500-1564- The Tribute Money; engraving on laid paper, signed 'Dominicus Campagnola inventor. / Luca Bertelius f.' (within the plate, lower left), 34.6 x 43.6 cm. (unframed / mounted). Provenance: Property of the Late Professor Eric Gerald Stanley, FBA (1923-2018) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Stanley).Literature:  Le Blanc 7; See M. Grosso, Un editore per Tiziano. Luca Bertelli e le stampe di devozione tra Italia e Spagna, in 2018, in Venezia e gli Asburgo. Pittura, collezionismo e circuiti commerciali nel tardo Rinascimento Europeo, Venezia, 2018, pp. 58-59 and 154-55.  Note:  Luca Bertelli was a libraio (bookseller), engraver, and one of the leading publishers in Venice in the second half of the 16th century. He collaborated with various Italian artists and engravers such as Martino Rota, Gaspare Oselli and Agostino Carracci. Domenico Campagnola, towards the end of his career, made a series of drawings which were given to or ended up in the hands of Bertelli and were used as models for some engravings. One of the drawings, the Banquet of the Rich Man and Lazarus, set in a Landscape is in the Morgan Library, New York (inv. no. IV, 64; for the print, see Le Blanc 6).  It is generally assumed that this plate was engraved by Luca Bertelli himself. The tablet at the lower left corner reads 'Dominicus Campagnola inventor. Luca Bertelli f.'. The 'f.' might stand for 'fecit' (made or engraved, in Latin) or 'formis' (published, in Latin). Most of the engravings published by Luca bear the inscription 'formis', identifying him as the publisher, rather than the engraver, and it seems likely that these plates, including the present one, were engraved by another hand, yet to be identified. Another version sold at Christie's, New York, 24 January 2023, lot 53 ($1,008).

Lot 23

Follower of Domenico Beccafumi,  Italian 1486-1551- Study of a group of figures; oil on paper laid down on panel, 32 x 59.8 cm. Provenance:  Private Collection, UK. Note:  The head types in this unfinished composition appear to be stylistically and technically comparable to a group of head studies in oil on paper by Domenico Beccafumi, which are connected to a series of frescoes in La Sala del Concistoro in the Palazzo Pubblico, Siena. Some of these studies share with the present work a characteristic technique, with outlines of the nose, eyes, and mouth made with thick dark paint, and the neck, back of the head, and fingers with elegant lines of the brush. The lively arrangement of the heads on the present sheet recalls Beccafumi's work in Siena Cathedral, and in particular the artist's designs for the pavement tiles. Furthermore, the dramatically lit heads here can loosely be compared with Beccafumi's oil sketch on paper 'Head of Thrasybulus' in the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York [no.I,19b]. It has been suggested that the present work is a representation of the Hebrew story 'The Judgement of Solomon'.

Lot 240

Circle of Thomas Faed, RSA,  Scottish 1825/26-1900- The Watercarrier; oil on canvas, 35.5 x 30.3 cm. Provenance:  Private Collection, UK (by descent from the owner's great-grandmother). Note:  Faed was a member of an influential and prolific artistic family, with his siblings including the artists James Faed (1821-1911), John Faed (1819-1902) and Susan Faed (1827-1909). He was best known for his genre scenes, typically featuring figures in romanticised rural settings engaged in domestic tasks, such as a depiction of a 'Woman plucking poultry' which sold at Morgan O'Driscoll, Ireland, on 26 October 2021, lot 100 (€2,300 hammer), or his 'Milkmaid', at the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow [GLAHA_51839].
