1964 Morris Mini Cooper Mk. I Transmission: manualMileage:63615To many, its designer Alec Issigonis included, the notion that the Mini might have a future as anything other than basic transport was an anathema, and the idea of a high-performance version was laughable. One man though, saw it quite differently. Racing car manufacturer John Cooper already knew quite a bit about tuning BMC's A-Series engine, he was running the company's Formula Junior effort at the time, and a test drive in a prototype Mini convinced him of the car's competition potential. The result, launched in September 1961, was the Mini Cooper, a car that offered a size/price/performance package that was nothing short of miraculous. The Mini Cooper soon established its credentials as a rally and race winner, and the stage was set for even faster versions. This superb example was first registered in August 1964. Owned by an enthusiast, this iconic Mini features its original gearbox, engine and bodyshell and has benefitted from a full restoration which was completed in 2019. The car now presents extremely well with Almond Green paintwork and a contrasting white roof which is complemented by seats trimmed in green and grey. All door cards and headlining are also in wonderful condition. The history file for this impressive car contains a photographic history of the restoration, receipts for new parts, previous MoT test certificates and a Heritage Certificate. Offered to auction with a V5C registration document, this authentic Morris Mini Cooper would grace any collection but at the same time, can be driven on the roads to Club/Concours events where it would quite possibly collect a trophy!

Lot 141

1964 Morris Minor Traveller Transmission: manualMileage:80575The Morris Minor was a British economy car that debuted at the Earls Court Motor Show on 20th September 1948. Designed under the leadership of Alec Issigonis, over 1.3 million examples were manufactured from 1948-1971. Initially available as a two-door saloon and convertible, the range was subsequently expanded to include a four-door saloon in 1950 and wood-framed estate, The Traveller, plus the panel van and pick-up truck variants in 1952. The Traveller featured an external structural ash frame for the rear bodywork, with two side-hinged rear doors. The frame was varnished rather than painted and became a highly visible feature of the body style. Other changes included a modified dashboard layout with toggle switches, textured steel instrument binnacle, and larger convex glovebox covers. A different heater completed the interior upgrade, whilst the larger, more modern combined front side/indicator light units, common to many BMC vehicles of the time, were fitted to the front wings. This superb example has been lovingly restored and cherished by the current owner. It is presented in light blue with a light grey interior, both of which are immaculate, including the iconic exterior woodwork. The present vendor purchased the car in 2011, showing 79,000 miles on the clock and has used it sparingly since with the odometer now showing a mere 80,575 miles. The vendor has commissioned some substantial works in 2020 including overhauling the engine bay, brakes, body and paintwork, new rubbers amongst many other jobs completed at a cost of around £7,500, all of which were carried out by Charles Wares Morris Minor Centre. The car comes with a good history including invoices going as far back as 1966 and reassuringly it also comes with a current MoT test certificate which expires in December 2023.

Lot 150

1952 Morris Minor series II Convertible Transmission: manualMileage:34555The Morris Minor debuted at the Earls Court Motor Show in London on 20th September 1948. Designed by Alec Issigonis, more than 1.3 million were manufactured between 1948 and 1971. In 1952, the Morris Minor was updated with an Austin-designed 803cc overhead valve, A-Series engine replacing the original side-valve unit. The engine had been designed for the Minor's main competitor, the Austin A30, but became available when Austin and Morris were merged into the British Motor Corporation. Cosmetically the front wings and grille were replaced, and the headlights moved from the grille to the front wings. In 1952, in addition to the two and four-door saloon and the four-seat convertible, an estate version known as the Traveller was introduced (a Morris naming tradition for estates, also seen on the Mini), along with the van and pick-up versions. This stunning fully restored early split screen example was first registered on 1st May 1952 and supplied from new as a factory convertible. Presented in gleaming black coachwork with contrasting red trim and beautifully fitted new hood. The engine has been replaced with an uprated later Morris engine enabling this car to, more purposefully, keep up with modern traffic yet still retain a period feel. In this condition the car is really a joy to drive and would adorn any show, a credit to its owner and sure to be loved and cherished for many more years by its new custodian.

Lot 159

1966 Austin Mini Cooper Mk. I (998cc) Transmission: manualMileage:69300These fabulous and popular little cars were designed in 1959 and were heralded as a new concept in car design. Little did they know or envisage what would become of these great models. With a monocoque shell, transversely mounted engine and front wheel drive, the new 'Mini' soon became popular across the world and to all types of individuals well healed or not! The potential for competition use was soon seen by John Cooper; he eventually persuaded BMC and the two worked together culminating in the birth of the Austin Mini Cooper and the Morris Mini Cooper in 1961. Victories in the 1964, 1965 and 1967 Monte-Carlo Rallies set the Mini on the road to fame but probably the greatest publicity was gained from their, somewhat unfair, disqualification for lighting irregularities in the 1966 event after coming in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. A more powerful Mini Cooper, dubbed the 'S', was developed in tandem and released in 1963.Offered here is a truly exceptional Mk. I Austin Cooper restored to its original specification. Such high quality restorations are usually reserved for only the very best Cooper S models, making this probably the best condition Cooper on the road. Restored from the ground-up in its original colours of Tweed Grey with an Old English White roof, this car wants for nothing. Such was the obsessive nature of the restoration, that there are an abundance of period correct details not often found on many Minis, that will surely please any Mini aficionado. A good example of this is the period correct, crimped exhaust silencer, fabricated because these items are no longer available. Indeed, throughout the extensive photographic record of the restoration, you can see that no stone has been left unturned in the pursuit of perfection and it is a pleasure to see such effort going into something other than an ‘S’. The history file shows that since its restoration in 2013 the engine was rebuilt in 2017 and has hardly done any mileage since. Such pride was taken in the restoration of this car that a full photo gallery of it can still be seen on the restorer’s website. The Heritage Certificate shows this car to have been originally completed on 10th February 1966 and despatched to Solihull Motor Company on 26th February 1966 with the only option added being a fresh-air heater.Supplied with the Heritage Certificate, history file, driver’s handbook and photographic record of its restoration. This unique and correct Cooper is offered from the private collection of Jamiroquai’s front man, Jay Kay.

Lot 168

1965 Morris 1100 Mk. I Transmission: manualMileage:12688In 1962, a quite revolutionary new saloon was launched by BMC. With the codename ADO16 this new car was hot from the drawing boards of Alec Issigonis, who set out to design a larger and more sophisticated car which incorporated more advanced features and innovations, and the world-famous Italian design house Pininfarina. Offered in many guises by Innocenti, Morris, Riley, Wolseley, Vanden Plas and Austin, the ADO16 was truly universal in its appeal. In line with BMC's policy at the time, Austin badged versions of the ADO16 were built at Longbridge, whilst Morris and MG versions were assembled at Cowley.Originally registered on 20th August 1965, this stunning Morris 1100 presents in time warp condition. The Old English White coachwork is unmarked and the red interior has a delightful patina which is certainly commensurate with such a low mileage example. The originality of this Morris is quite remarkable, particularly taking into account it is 58 years old, even the tyres are still the original ones that the car left the factory with. In 1991 this Morris was put into dry storage and has been recently recommissioned at a cost of £1,300. The original factory parts, which were taken off the car, have been kept by the fastidious vendor. Open the boot on this car, and you will understand the excellent condition the car is in. Start the engine and the familiar sound of the A-Series engine is apparent. We are advised this Morris 1100 runs well and drives with no known faults, with everything working exactly as it should. The spare tyre has never been on the car and the tools are still in the original bag in the boot. Supplied with a V5C registration document, together with a current MoT test certificate valid until 8th June 2023, even though the car is MoT exempt. A great history file confirms the exceedingly low mileage of 12,688; this is an unrepeatable opportunity to purchase an iconic piece of British motoring history.Guide £11,000-£14,000

Lot 413

One of the rarest Cooper ‘S’ derivatives, fully rebuilt and outstanding throughout. The Mini Cooper soon established its credentials as a rally and race winner, and the stage was set for even faster versions. The more powerful Mini Cooper 1071 'S' appeared in 1963 and quickly became the basis for competition-focused models. Larger disc brakes, more luxurious upholstery and discrete 'S' badges on the bonnet and boot were subtle upgrades with the real changes made to the adaptable A-series engine. With competition in mind, particularly the British Saloon Car Championship, in 1964 Cooper produced two 'S' models, the 970 and 1275 aimed clearly at the under-1,000cc and under-1,300cc BSCC classes respectively. The road-going 970 'S' was a real 'Homologation Special' with its 'revvy' little short-stroke engine producing over 65bhp but it was expensive to manufacture, so BMC made it a 'special-order' model, and consequently, very few were sold (with even fewer remaining today). The 970 'S' was only produced from June 1964 until April 1965 and with just 963 examples supplied, of which 397 were badged Morris, it's one of the rarest and most sought-after Mini models. This rather smart 970 'S' is superbly finished in Tweed Grey with an Old English White roof and was the subject of a comprehensive restoration some years ago with new floor and panels as required. It's fitted with a straight-cut gearbox and the engine was fully rebuilt in 2021 by its present owner to standard 970 'S’ spec with new cam, cam followers, flywheel and clutch. The carburettors were rebuilt, a new electronic distributor from Swiftune was fitted and the dry suspension was fully rebuilt utilising new subframes. The impressive interior is correctly finished in Porcelain Green/Dove Grey and boasts reclining seats-an expensive option at the time. Another option was an additional fuel tank and filler on the right-hand side. Standard wheels were vented, 9-slot, 10”x 4.5” painted Old English White, with central chromed-steel hubcaps and had a more negative offset than the standard Mini and Cooper. Front and rear chrome bumpers were fitted with over-riders and corner 'nerf' bars. The odometer currently reads 53,490 miles, which is largely academic considering the cars extensive refresh, and our particularly fastidious vendor will ensure that this little 'S' will be absolutely on the button for the sale at Race Retro.    SpecificationMake: MORRISModel: MINI COOPER 970 'S'Year: 1965Chassis Number: KA254550737Registration Number: HKH 57CTransmission: ManualDrive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 53490 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Grey / GreenClick here for more details and images

Lot 425

Starts on the button and supplied with its original Bill of Sale, bookpack, two sets of keys, tool kit and the interior plastic protection still in place. A little time capsule!Only one motor manufacturer can boast a near 50-year dominance of the “nippy sports car” market as MG did between the 1920s and the 1970s. Starting with the home market demand for a reasonably priced convertible, with equal parts optimism and stoicism on the part of the driver, MG led the field both at home and abroad. The Midget moniker was first used with the introduction of the MG M-Type produced between 1929 and 1932, one of the first genuinely affordable sports cars to be offered by an established manufacturer.Successive generations of the Midget were so universally popular that a fluttering headscarf was as likely to be seen as a flat cap by a passing motorist. Perhaps the last British sports car to hold the driver’s enjoyment and budget in equal measure, the MG Midget’s fifty-year production run has a legacy represented today by the surviving examples and affectionate reminiscences by previous owners. The car's swansong arrived in 1978 in the form of the MG Midget 1500, easily distinguishable from its predecessor by the impact-resistant rubber bumpers required for the US market, whilst beneath the familiar coach lines there lay a Morris all-synchromesh gearbox. The adoption of head restraints, inertia-reel seatbelts, and dual-circuit braking were amongst improvements made before production ceased at the end of 1979. We lead nicely, therefore, to this remarkable car’s story that started with its purchase by a Mr Taylor. The accompanying Bill of Sale from Dutton Forshaw Ltd., of Blackburn on the 16th June 1979 confirms the purchase price of £2,624.26 and a letter dated 12th October 1979 from the dealer offers advice on how to register his new car. The Heritage Certificate confirms that the car was manufactured on the 27th October 1978, finished in black, with a matching hood and interior, fitted with Rostyle wheels and dispatched a few weeks later on the 15th November. It's understood that a second MG Midget was used as a daily driver by Mrs Taylor and, consequently, this car remained unregistered and dry stored over the following decades with protective plastic coverings over the seats and floor mats. The interior is a remarkable study for any car enthusiast and remains as crisp as the day the components were fitted. Starting on the key with the help of the choke, the engine ran and idled well and likewise forward and rear gear selection proved to be smooth. We note that the car, whilst dry stored, has acquired some surface 'browning' to certain metal components, caused by condensation, which is typical for cars stored in this manner and, in fact, adds to the originality of this very special little motorcar with just 45 miles on the odometer from new.Supplied to auction with its Handbooks safe in the bright blue Leyland Cars pocket folder, each booklet is crisp and the Leyland Cars SuperCover literature even contains the original self-addressed envelope. It's presented with both sets of keys, the original Bill of Sale, purchase receipt, dealer correspondence and its Heritage Certificate.Simply remarkable.SpecificationMake: MGModel: MIDGET 1500Year: 1978Chassis Number: GAN6/218113GRegistration Number: UNREGISTEREDTransmission: ManualEngine Number: FP/65969-EDrive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 45 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Black VinylClick here for more details and images

Lot 472

Offered from The Twin Sparks Collection a delightfully presented Mk1 Sprite in a glorious colour combination.Intended to make sports car motoring more affordable, the Donald Healey-designed Sprite entered production at MG's Abingdon factory in March 1958. The new car was officially introduced a few months later in Monte Carlo, just prior to the Monte Carlo Rally, underlining this brand-new car's sporting intentions. Its unitary construction body shell featured a distinctive rearward-hinging, combined bonnet and wings, which was topped by two 'bugeye' headlamps, thus ensuring instant recognition and the now familiar nickname. The Sprite used independent front suspension with rack-and-pinion steering, ensuring great road holding. Despite a Spartan equipment level with even the front bumper listed as an extra, the 'Bugeye' sold well, which perhaps was unsurprising as there was nothing competing with it either on price or performance. It first went on sale at a price of £669, using a mildly tuned version of the Austin A-Series engine and many other components from existing cars to keep costs down. The little Sprite quickly became affectionately known as the 'Frogeye' in the UK and the 'Bugeye' in the US, because its headlights were prominently mounted on top of the bonnet, inboard of the front wings. Originally the designers had intended that the headlights could be retracted, with the lenses facing skyward when not in use; but cost-cutting by BMC led to the flip-up mechanism being deleted. The front sheet-metal assembly, including the bonnet and wings, was a one-piece unit, hinged from the back that swung up to allow access to the engine compartment. The 43bhp, 948cc engine was upgraded with twin 1 1/8" inch SU carburettors. The rack and pinion steering and suspension were derived from the Morris Minor with the front suspension made up of a coil spring and wishbone arrangement with the arm of the Armstrong lever shock absorber serving as the top suspension link. The rear axle was both located and sprung by quarter-elliptic leaf springs, again with lever-arm shock absorbers. There were no exterior door handles; the driver and passenger were required to reach inside to open the door, and there was no boot lid so access to the spare wheel and luggage compartment was achieved by tilting the seat-backs forward and reaching under the rear deck. This particular Sprite again ticked the many boxes required to make it into The Twin Sparks Collection. With its truly staggering finish, it is remarkable to see such attention to detail on a car where you typically see corners cut due to the affordable nature of the car in the first place, but a truly brilliant result has been achieved with this car. It was subjected to a retirement restoration project commencing in 2005, and finally completed in 2012. It lived 30 years of its life under single ownership and the restoration has simply brought it up to a ‘better than new’ standard. The bodywork and paint were professionally undertaken by a specialist in Rolls-Royce, which explains its high quality finish. The cars mechanical and electrical components were either restored or replaced to the original specification wherever possible. The 948cc A-Series engine was re-bored and fitted with new pistons, reground crankshaft, new bearings, timing chain, sprockets as well as oil and water pumps. The only diversions from standard specification were the popular choices of fitting the improved 12G295 cylinder head, replacing the original SU Carburettors with 1¼ in replacements, a superior ‘ribbed’ gearbox driving through a 1098cc type flywheel and clutch assembly, all built to make the car have that little more poke and an enhanced driving feel. The original seats and interior trim have all been reupholstered in navy blue vinyl with a matching hood. The original steel wheels are wrapped in Continental tyres and the car can simply be described as ‘meticulously detailed’. Within the history file, you’ll find a huge stack of invoices for parts and labour for the car, an original Special Tuning Booklet, Workshop Manual and correspondence between the buyer and the builder. With a full restoration, regular mechanical attention, only 100 miles since completion and very sensibly guided, this is arguably the best Frogeye Sprite currently on the market.SpecificationMake: AUSTINModel: HEALEY SPRITEYear: 1959Chassis Number: AN511884Registration Number: 822 VMUTransmission: ManualEngine Number: 9C-V-H11373Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 28 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Navy Blue VinylClick here for more details and images

Lot 476

Offered from The Twin Sparks Collection, a very late production, matching numbers, 1,071S in simply outstanding condition. The Mini Cooper needs no real introduction. Featuring highly, if not claiming top spot on every ‘iconic car through history’ list with its praise, popularity and successes all totally justified, made famous by the integrity of its engineering, charming looks, big screen provenance and giant-killing handling.Racing car manufacturer John Cooper was already the guru on tuning BMC's A-Series engine, running the company's Formula Junior effort at the time and a test drive in a prototype Mini convinced him of its competition potential. John Cooper appealed to BMC Management, with Issigonis' concerns being disregarded and the two good friends eventually cooperating in creating what rapidly became, and still remains, a legendary little motor car. The ‘S’ featured larger disc brakes, a vacuum-assisted brake booster, offset steel wheels which had been widened to 4½ inches, more luxurious upholstery, a 120mph speedometer and discrete 'S' badges on the bonnet and boot. They were subtle upgrades with the real changes made to the adaptable A-series engine. Mechanically, the 1071cc engine featured a cast engine block, with a special nitride steel crankshaft and a freer flowing cylinder head that was more suitable for racing.First launched in 1963, and only seeing a production run of just over 18 months with 4,000 cars produced, the Mini Cooper 1071 S managed to create a reputation and see competition success that was wildly disproportionate to the sales figures. It may have only pushed out 75bhp with 62lb/ft of torque, but when there’s only 686kg to pull around, it is fair to say it was a magic recipe for success. With the likes of Paddy Hopkirk, Timo Makinen and John Rhodes at the helm, most corners could be taken flat, culminating in a plethora of overall victories on roads, tracks and rallies. The car presented here is a 1964 Morris Mini Cooper 1071cc S manufactured on 23rd June 1964 and supplied new to its first owner through The Morris Garages of Oxford. While it was originally Tweed Grey with an Old English White roof, it now wears Tartan Red with Black roof  paired with a Tartan Red/Gold Brocade-Grey interior. Interestingly, the car was one of the last off the line, the 54th last produced, and wasn’t registered until 1st January 1965.Clearly cherished, maintained, and cared for, this wonderful Mini is absolutely on the button. The engine turns over at the first flick, with no coughing or spluttering, and drives with exactly the magic one has come to expect from these little Coops. The history file is fairly sparse, however, it does feature the Heritage Certificate showing it to still be matching numbers, a scan of the buff logbook and a selection of old MOTs.Make no mistake, this is a superb little car. With only a few miles covered since its restoration, this 1071 Cooper S will make a useful and fun purchase, safe in the knowledge that all the hard work has been done.SpecificationMake: MINIModel: COOPER S 1071Year: 1965Chassis Number: KA2S4563438Registration Number: BRT 971CTransmission: ManualEngine Number: 9FSAH33764Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 3120 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Red/GreyClick here for more details and images

Lot 1

1966 Morris Minor 2 door saloon Fitted with front disc brakes and an alternator Registration: VTB 82D Chassis: MA2S5D1123799 Odometer: 30600 Transmission: Manual MOT: Exempt No Reserve .  MOT certificates dating back to 1970 . Fitted with heated rear window and a reversing light         . Supplied with a CD player         . Fitted with the original interior         . Fitted with disc brakes, electronic ignition, alternator and spin on oil filter conversion         . Offered with a collection of paperwork dating back to 1970 Outside  This characterful Moggy is suffering from rust and bubbling on most exterior panels that will need some sort of treatment to delay the spread. All 4 Bridgestone tyres are in good order with plenty of tread remaining. Inside  The red vinyl and carpet interior presents better than the exterior, with some sagging in the drivers seat base, drivers door pull strap is looking thread bare and there is a tear in the vinyl in the foot well area. The carpets are in good condition front and rear as is the headlining and rear bench seat.  Mechanicals The engine starts and runs well and we've driven the car around the yard, been through all the gears and used the brakes, which work as well as you'd expect.  History  Supplied new on 1st March 1966 and registered by Lancashire County council and still pleasingly carrying its original registration number. Updated over the years with the sensible modifications of front disc brakes, alternator, electronic ignition and a spin on oil filter which all make for a much more useable vehicle and potentially a daily driver.  Our Opinion  Clearly the Morris has some issues to areas of the bodywork it already has some desirable upgrades mentioned above, so this is a car that can be used, enjoyed and improved as and when time allows. The Minors are great fun to own, easy to work on, with a plentiful supply of inexpensive spare parts and supported by the superb Morris Minors owners club.

1929 Morris Commercial 15.9hp R-Type Country Bus Chassis no. R2893 Engine no. R23744For further information on this lot please visit the Bonhams website•Typical British country bus of the Vintage period•Purchased at a Bonhams & Brooks auction in December 2000•Older restorationThe nascent Morris Motors had offered a commercial derivative of its first passenger car, the Oxford, prior to WWI but it was not until the early 1920s that a serious attempt was made to grab a slice of the light van market. In 1923 the acquisition of the factory previously belonging to E G Wrigley Ltd, onetime component suppliers to Morris, enabled the company to expand into the heavier commercial market, with P G Rose as designer. Morris Commercial Cars Ltd was formed and introduced its first model, the one-ton T-type, in May 1924. Like the Morris vans, the T-type relied on passenger car components, including the contemporary Oxford's 13.9hp engine. Morris Commercials found favour, particularly with the General Post Office (Royal Mail); indeed, such was their success that production expanded to the former Wolseley works at nearby Adderley Park. By the end of the 1930s Morris Commercial Cars Ltd was Europe's largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles. This delightful 30cwt Model R carries country bus-style coachwork typical of vehicles operated by coach proprietors in almost every village in the days before motor car ownership became common. Unlike the earlier car-based vans, the R-Type (introduced in 1928) was powered by a purpose-built commercial vehicle Z-Type engine of 2.8 litres and had a four-speed gearbox. Four-wheel brakes were optional. A version with a longer wheelbase was introduced in 1930, which was powered by larger engines and had four-wheel brakes as standard. By the time R-Type production ceased in 1933 a total of 17,745 had been built. This example of the 'Middleweight Champion' was purchased by Peter and Ulrike Bühner at Bonhams & Brooks' Olympia sale in December 2000 (Lot 1891), at which time it carried the UK registration 'DS 7653'. An older restoration, it would be ideal for film and television work, not to mention attending events such as the Goodwood Revival. Offered with an old-style UK V5 registration document. Lot 124

1937 SS 100 Jaguar 2½-Litre Two-seater Sports Chassis no. 18050 Engine no. 250997•One of approximately 190 SS 100 2½-Litre models made•Present ownership since 2010•Restored to concours condition over the last 10 years•Featured in numerous publicationsFootnotes:Launched for 1936, the SS 100 was the first real high-performance model produced by SS Cars Limited and used a new Weslake-developed overhead-valve engine in a shortened SS 1 chassis. The introduction of the OHV unit was considered to justify the adoption of a new name for the series, SS Cars boss William Lyons later recalling 'I immediately pounced on Jaguar as it had an exciting sound to me'. ('Jaguar' would be adopted as the marque name in 1943, 'SS' having by then acquired a somewhat tarnished reputation).'SS' originally stood for the Swallow Sidecar & Coachbuilding Company, which had been founded in Blackpool, England by William Walmsley. The company branched out into motor manufacture in 1926, its first major success being an attractive sports saloon on the Austin Seven chassis, the design being the work of Walmsley's partner, one William Lyons. Relocation to Coventry followed and the Swallow range expanded to include models on Morris Cowley, Wolseley Hornet and Standard Sixteen chassis. Marque status arrived in October 1931 with the launch of the SS 1, the chassis of which was supplied exclusively to Swallow by Standard, who also provided the six-cylinder sidevalve engine and four-speed gearbox. Although unspectacular in performance, the SS 1 went some way towards establishing the pattern for future Jaguars, combining sporting good looks with a better-than-average specification and all at a bargain price. By the time the SS 90 sports car arrived in 1935, William Heynes had joined as Chief Engineer. Based on a shortened SS 1 chassis, re-engineered by Heynes, the SS 90 again demonstrated Lyons' consummate skill as a stylist, its long bonnet, smoothly flowing wings, cut-away doors and truncated tail making it every inch the epitome of the 1930s sports car. Although good for 90mph, the SS 90 was handicapped by the limitations of its sidevalve engine, a deficiency that would soon be rectified by another of Lyons' new recruits, gas-flow consultant Harry Weslake. Launched in 1936 alongside the 2½-Litre saloon, the SS 100 Jaguar sports car marked the company's first use of the 'Jaguar' name. Beautifully styled in the manner of its SS 90 predecessor, the newcomer employed a shorter, 102'-wheelbase chassis and a revised version of the 2,663cc Standard six which, equipped with Weslake's overhead-valve cylinder head and breathing through twin SU carburettors, now produced 104bhp. Although a fine touring car, the SS 100 was marketed as primarily for competition work. Its first major success came early, if somewhat unexpectedly, when Tommy Wisdom, crewed by his wife Elsie, won the arduous International Alpine Trial in 1936, beating Bugatti and bringing the fledgling marque to the attention of the Continental public. This would be the first of many successful rallying forays, including class wins in the RAC events of 1937 and 1938, and the Alpine (outright) again in 1948. Around 190 2½-Litre and 116 of the later 3½-Litre cars had been made by the time SS 100 production was prematurely ended by the outbreak of war.Chassis number '18050' was delivered by Henlys, Manchester to its first owner, Jack Harrop, in December 1936, that year's cars being the first to carry the 'Jaguar' name. Harrop entered the car in the 1937 RAC Rally, which he won, achieving the highest score among all the classes. The 1937 RAC Rally is on record as having some of the worst ever driving conditions, with heavy snowdrifts to battle through. That same year Harrop entered the Monte Carlo Rally and won the RSAC award for the top entrant from Scotland. At the time of delivery, the car went to Switzerland where Jack Harrop lived. He served as a fighter pilot in WW2 and sadly was killed in action. SS Jaguar Cars featured a picture of '18050' in their 1939 sales brochure under 'Sporting Success' (copy on file). '18050' is also featured with pictures in several motoring journals of 1937 including Speed magazine, some of which are in the accompanying file. There are also some action pictures taken of the car crossing the finishing line in Monte Carlo and during the rallies. '18050' is also featured in Andrew Whyte's book, SS 100 Super Profile. After the war the car ended up going to the USA, eventually ending up in the ownership of William Martin, a prominent SS 100 collector. In 1993 William sent the car back to the UK to be garaged by a friend for eventual restoration. However, the restoration never happened and the SS languished in the garage for the next 17 years until 2010, when William realised at the age of 80-plus years he was not going to get around to the restoration and decided to offer it for sale to the current vendor. William travelled to the UK from his California home to visit the vendor at his home to discuss the deal and proposals for the car's restoration. He was very keen that it should be a sympathetic restoration and needed to satisfy himself on this point before agreeing the sale. The restoration took 10 years to complete and included the following work:•Engine completely rebuilt by specialist (the block is endorsed with the SS 100 by the factory)•Gearbox rebuilt by a specialist, and a new propshaft made using the original yokes •Chassis medium-blasted and then hot zinc sprayed followed by three coats of specialist chassis paint•Ash body frame removed and all joints re-glued; gusset-strengthening ash built in; frame re-skinned; new plywood floors, all as original•Springs overhauled and new Silentbloc bushes fitted •Original Luvax shock absorbers overhauled and refitted; André Hartford shock absorbers replaced•Original brake shoes relined and all rods plated and refitted•Total electrical rewire using Autosparks (Lucas) wiring loom•All brightwork removed and refurbished (re-chroming undertaken by Derby Plating)•QK596 headlights restored by Vintage Headlight Restorations•Steering rack overhauled by Holman Engineering•Total interior re-trim with new leather throughout by restoration specialist John Foy using original trim patterns and detailing•New door cards, hood, tonneau cover, side screens and carpets. •All dashboard instruments overhauled and re-calibrated by a specialistThe repaint was undertaken by a specialist coachwork sprayer in the original SS colour of Maroon. The car sits on a set of new MWS wheels with New Zealand rims and Blockley tyres. With the car are the restored SS 100 jack, tools, and a starting handle. During the restoration the car was inspected and verified by David Davenport of Davenport Cars Ltd (specialist restorers of SS Jaguars from all around the world). Throughout the restoration the vendor emjoyed the help and support of some of the world's leading authorities on the SS marque: David Davenport, Alan Crouch, Jaguar Drivers' Club, Alan Gibbons, and from Australia John Clucas and Ed Nantes. The SS 100 was one of the fastest and best-handling sports cars of its day, as its competition record both before and after the war bears witness to. Representing a rare opportunity to acquire an historically significant example of the model that can be said to have started the Jaguar legend, '18050' is eligible for a wide variety of the most prestigious historic motor sports events.
