Pair: Lieutenant L. H. Forrest, Royal Flying Corps and 47th Sikhs, a DH9 pilot of 27 Squadron who was shot down, wounded and taken Prisoner of War whilst trying to carry out a raid on the bridge at Voyenne, as part of the first day of the Battle of Amiens British War and Victory Medals (Lieut. L. H. Forrest. R.A.F.) minor edge bruising, generally nearly very fine (2) £300-£400 --- Lionel Hugh Forrest was born in May 1897, the son of H. E. Forrest, a musical instrument dealer. Forrest was educated at Bishop Vesey’s School, Sutton Coldfield. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 47th Sikhs in November 1915, and advanced to Lieutenant later the following year. Forrest transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in early 1917, and carried out initial training as a pilot. He was posted as a pilot for operational flying with 27 Squadron (D.H.9’s) on the Western Front in July 1918. The Squadron was tasked with bombing and reconnaissance operations, and Forrest often found himself crewed with Lieutenant S. W. P. Foster-Sutton as his Observer. The fate of the pair is described in The Flying Elephants: The History of No. 27 Squadron RFC/RAF 1915 to 1969, by Chaz Bowyer: ‘By the end of July preparations were complete for the first main Allied offensive since the perilous days of March 1918. Accordingly at the beginning of August, IX Brigade left the French zone, 27 Squadron moving to Beauvois on August 8. This same day saw the start of the Battle of Amiens and 27 were in action immediately. Just after dawn fourteen DHs attacked St. Christ aerodrome in the Peronne sector, while at mid-day a mixed force of DH4’s and 9’s bombed bridges over the Somme at Bethencourt, Voyennes and Offoy from low level. Once lightened of their bombs all aircraft dropped down to deck-level and completed their sorties by strafing German troops, transport and emplacements with machine-gun fire. German fighters scoured the whole battle front offering fanatical resistance to the Allied aircraft, among them the Richthofen “Circus” which claimed thirteen victims on that date. None of these belonged to 27 but the squadron was attacked by a flight from Jasta 29 and lost three bombers. These were DH9 D 1719 (to Oberleutnant H. Auffarth), DH9 D 7317 (Vizefeldwebel Gregor) and DH4 B 2133 (victor unknown). Of the crews, Lts. H. M. Brown, L. H. Forest [sic] and S. W. P. Foster-Sutton survived as prisoners of the Germans.’ Both Forrest and Foster-Sutton were wounded, and taken Prisoner of War by the Germans. Their aircraft was claimed as shot down by the German Ace Lieutnant Richard Wentzl of Jasta 6. Forrest was repatriated in December 1918, and relinquished his temporary commission in the R.A.F. to return to the Indian Army in October 1919. In later life resided at Old Parrs, Middletown, Welshpool. Sold with extensive copied research, Combat Reports, ORB entries etc.

After JOHN WILLIAM GODWARD, British (18651-1922), 'Reverie of the Days of Sappho', marble, probably French or Italian, late 19th century, white statuary marble, with other coloured marbles, unsigned, modelled as a young classical lady seated with one arm raised leaning on the bench, the other holding a rolled manuscript, her lyre beside her, 50cm high, 67cm wide. Although unsigned, this sculpture appears to be based on the work of Godward's "Reverie of the Days of Sappho". He painted numerous artworks depicting beautiful women, usually seated or draped over a marble bench. Perhaps collected as a Grand Tour style piece late in the 19th century. Sappho was an ancient Greek lyric poet and known in antiquity for her Love poems. Sappho from the Isle of Lesbos wrote widely and included the love between women, introducing the term Lesbian to modern day culture.  In this piece Sappho is depicted contemplating love, holding her poetry in hand and with Lyre, a stringed musical instrument, beside her. She is sitting on a Roman style garden bench, much emulated in grand gardens today.

Lot 471

Walzenspieldose"Sublime-Harmonie Tremlolo" mit Wechselzylindern, um 1882F.C. Lecoultre. Start Price: EUR 5500 Zustand: (3/3)Interchangeable "Sublime-Harmonie Tremlolo" Musical Box, a Presentation Model, c. 1882F.C. Lecoultre. No. 46254 (on tune-sheet), with three cylinders playing eight airs each, massive nickel-plated double-spring movement, governor-cock stamped "A.P. Co.", three combs of 39, 44 and 39 teeth (missing one tip, approx. eleven replacement teeth and one replacement tip), ebonized case with brass stringing and inlaid legend "Genève 1882" on front and lid, shell-form ormolu handles and enameled crest with motto: "Virtus Mille Scuta" ("Virtue is equal to a thousand swords"), on matching table with cylinder-storage drawer and cabriole legs with carved fern-and-foliate relief, wd. including table 50 ½ in. (128 cm), cylinders 17 in. (43.5 cm), playing condition. - Note: Accompanying the musical box are the tune-sheet and operating instructions, the latter with credit "A. Perrelet et Cie". The first cylinder is devoted to sacred airs, the second and third to predominantly operatic works by Meyerbeer, Gounod, Verdi, Weber and others, including the overtures from "Freyschütz" and "Zampa". Auguste Perrelet et Cie, whose initials are found on the governor-cock, took over the business of F.C. Lecoultre in 1871 and continued their existing serial numbers until closure in 1900 (H.A.V. Bulleid, "Tune Sheets"). - Literature: Illustrated in Jan Brauers, "Von der Aeolsharfe zum Digitalspieler", p. 163. - Brauers states that this musical box was the gift of a Spanish count to Queen Victoria on the occasion of her birthday or jubilee. The year 1882 marked the 45th anniversary of Victoria’s ascension to the throne. Whether Brauers’ assertion is correct, the imposing scale of the musical box, its deluxe case, the crest and the delineation of date and location suggest an instrument produced for presentation or exhibition purposes. The instrument comes from an auction in the 1980s in London from the estate of the royal family. Start Price: EUR 5500 Condition: (3/3)

Lot 504

Watch and Listen on:Youtube.com/AuctionTeamBreker Start Price: EUR 4400 Zustand: (2/2)Musical Automaton Bust of an Ethiopian Lyre-Player by Gustave Vichy, c. 1890With papier-mâché head, open smiling mouth, brown glass eyes with articulated lids, original black mohair wig and a single crescent earring, on ebonized plinth with tune-sheet and metal plaque stamped: "G. Vichy, Paris, 5 Articles Français, Marque Deposé, Modele Deposé", the torso containing going-barrel motor and two-air cylinder movement, in gold silk costume with metallic embroidery, headdress and the original coin decoration, ht. 20 in. (51 cm) including headdress, with acorn-form stop / start and modern key, surface of face restored, good working and playing condition. - Note: Part of a series of Vichy automata reminiscent of the polychrome-painted bronze busts by French artists such as Émile Guillemin and Charles Cordier. The impression of an animated sculpture is heightened by the graceful modelling of the face and hands and the slender plinth base in imitation of its bronze counterparts. From the choice of subject, to the style of costume and the instrument she plays, the automaton was influenced by a 19th century fascination with 'exoticism' that reflected African cultures through a European lens. - The musician turns and gently bows her head to the left and right, blinks and appears to play the instrument with a lifting and plucking motion of the right arm. - This example has been sympathetically restored by David Secrett and Margaret Glover. - Literature: Q. David Bowers, Encyclopedia of Automatic Musical Instruments, p. 80, for an identical piece, one of several French automata in the catalog of retailer Gustav Uhlig of Halle, Saxony. Watch and Listen on:Youtube.com/AuctionTeamBreker Start Price: EUR 4400 Condition: (2/2)
