**Brass Miner’s Safety Lamp with Welsh Colliery Markings**A brass miner’s safety lamp historically used in coal mining operations to detect the presence of explosive gases. This lamp features a cylindrical brass body with a glass enclosure protected by brass struts. It includes a domed top with ventilation holes, a wire handle for carrying or hanging, and a weighted brass base for stability. Visible markings on an embossed plaque indicate its origin: - *"BRITISH COAL MINES / COURTESY NANTGARW COLLIERY / MERTHYR VALE COLLIERY"*- Serial Number: *1142*- Maker: *"MADE BY THE COAL COMPANY WALES"*Additionally, the base is engraved with *"MADE IN WALES"* and *"VALE METAL SPINNERS"*, indicating Welsh craftsmanship. This item is linked to the industrial heritage of South Wales, particularly the Nantgarw and Merthyr Vale Collieries. Likely dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, it exemplifies safety innovations used during the peak of British coal mining. Approximate height: 8–12 inches.
Nantgarw, a good Nantgarw plate circa 1818-20 with hand painted floral central motif and surround, gilt rim. Impressed to base for Nantgarw. Previously sold in Bonhams Fine Glass and British Ceramics, Knightsbridge, 5th June 2019 sale. Diameter 23.5cm.Condition is very good. There are no chips, cracks or damage to the motif. There is some very light wear to the gilding on the edge in a couple of places (see additional photos). With Bonhams 2019 receipt for £500.
