She would produce five pictorial maps (Africa twice, Australia, North America and South America) with the idea of fostering and improving geographical and historical education, as well as generating international cooperation and world peace. Ambitions, no doubt encouraged by her upbringing in the Quaker boarding school in Sibford near Banbury in North Oxfordshire. Her parents emigrated to South Africa and she would eventually follow them in 1904. She settled in South Africa and would produce and illustrate nine books, primarily for children as well as her maps. She lived until 1981, dying at the age of 91, leaving a legacy of vibrancy and vitality to the teaching of geography and history. She lived by a principle, that is encapsulated in her own words "Waterloo may have been won on the playing fields of Eton, but the effect of teaching geography and history intelligently and in correlation in the schoolroom would be far-reaching and would contribute substantially to the avoidance of Waterloos in the future".

Sedes sapientiae; Spain, 12th centuryCarved and polychromed wood.Faults in the carving and polychromy. Damage by xylophages.Measurements: 44 x 15 x 10 cm.Devotional round sculpture representing the figure of the Virgin and Child. Its hieratic finish and the angular folds of its tunic indicate that it is a work made between the 13th and 14th century. The carving follows the Marian model of the "Sede Sapientae", dressed in tunic and mantle, welcoming the Child. The parallel and v-shaped folds, typically Romanesque, mark a regular rhythm in the drapery of the mantle, whose golden patterns on the red of the Passion give a luminous substance to the Marian figure. In the Romanesque, the Virgin Mary is merely the seat of divinity; she is not presented as the mother of God, so there is no affective relationship between her and the Child. In fact, at this time the Virgin is not yet an important figure in the Church. These Romanesque Virgin Thrones of God were always made in a size of between 50 and 100 cm in height, mainly in carved wood, and in them the Child is always the protagonist, despite the difference in size with his mother. Jesus always appears in front of the viewer, and normally in the centre, in this image we see that although Mary continues to have a more hieratic form, the Child is already represented in profile, and raising his arms towards his mother, in a more natural position which indicates a clear formal advance within the Romanesque, approaching the Gothic. The Annunciation is an episode that has been widely represented throughout the history of Christian art, given that it is one of the main dogmas of the church, that of the Incarnation. It is also included in both the cycle of the life of Christ and the life of the Virgin, which gives it renewed meaning as a narrative episode. With regard to the theme alluding to the Virgin of the Annunciation, the iconographic tradition includes a more narrative scene in which the Archangel Gabriel appears to the Virgin to tell her that she is pregnant. Normally the Virgin is placed behind an altar or table, where a book or white lilies, iconographic attributes associated with the Virgin, are usually placed. However, over the centuries the elements began to be reduced, as can be seen in important works that depict the same iconography of the Annunciation, based exclusively on the representation of the Virgin. An example of this is The Madonna of the Annunciation in Messina.

ARTIST: Edward T Vebell (Illinois, 1921-2018)NAME: Fulton's Clermont SteamboatYEAR: 1980MEDIUM: acrylic on boardCONDITION: Very good. No visible inpaint under UV light.SIGHT SIZE: 20 x 21 inches / 50 x 53 cmBOARD SIZE: 26 x 27 inches / 66 x 68 cmSIGNATURE: lower rightNOTE: This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for Epic Events in American History series issued in 1985. It was the English who invented the first steam engine and the first steam railroad but it was an American, Robert Fulton, who, in 1807, formally launched the steamboat era. Fulton was not the inventor, however, of the steamboat: that distinction belongs to poor John Fitch, a Connecticut Yankee and a veteran of the Continental Army who, as early as 1787, built and launched a forty-five-foot steamboat. But, alas, nothing came of that brave experiment. Fitch could get no financing for his invention and in the end gave up in despair and fled to the wilds of Kentucky where he died. Ten years later, the New York lawyer and diplomat, Robert Livingston, anticipating the role that steamboats might play in a vast nation whose only effective transportation was by water, persuaded his young friend Robert Fulton, with whose artistic and inventive talents he was familiar, to try his hand at building a steamboat. Fulton boasted a natural talent for engineering. He eagerly embraced Livingston's proposal and by 1807 was ready to launch The Clermont, named after Livingston's hometown. On its maiden trip, the boat steamed up the Hudson to Albany and returned five days later, having averaged a speed of five miles an hour. Successful as it was, it brought no great wealth to either Livingston or Fulton, for in 1824, John Marshall's Court pronounced their monopoly unconstitutional as an infringement on congressional power to regulate "commerce concerning the several states."PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. While serving in the Army, he was a contributing artist for Stars & Stripes magazine, working side by side with Bill Mauldin. His second major appointment was as courtroom artist for the Nuremburg Trials; his haunting portrait of Hermann Gering can be viewed at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. Over the decades following the war, Vebell designed 16 circulated postage stamps for the US Postal Service, and enjoyed frequent commissions from Reader's Digest, Sports Illustrated, and Time.
