Sandle for the British Art Medal Society, battleship in the act of sinking, Death’s head at centre, drowning sailor and serpent below, imperatrix impudens, rev. signature of the artist, 82mm, 331.60g (Attwood 39; Attwood/Powell p.29, fig. 20; The Medal 10, p.75, and 12, pp.61-4; BM Acq. 1983-7, p.85, 177; cf. Baldwin 74, 1833; cf. Noonans 311, 606). Extremely fine, dark patina as issued £150-£200 --- Edition of 56. At the time this medal caused considerable controversy, with the couplet imperatrix impudens [shameless Empress] linked to a characteristic hectoring pose of a death’s head intended to be associated with Margaret Thatcher (1925-2013), Prime Minister at the time of the Falklands War. The General Belgrano, an Argentine light cruiser, was torpedoed and sunk by the Royal Navy submarine Conqueror on 2 May 1982, with the loss of 323 lives

Laid up in reserve for a long period after 1815, she was refitted in 1834 but required major repairs in 1839 when she was docked in Plymouth until 1842 when she returned to sea. After several harbour based roles thereafter, she was finally broken up in 1887.
