Sandle, Michael (British, 1936-present); b. Weymouth, moved to Canada 1970, then Germany 1973, returned to England 1982 ENGLAND, Belgrano Medal – A Medal of Dishonour, 1986, a cast bronze medal by M. Sandle for the British Art Medal Society, battleship in the act of sinking, Death’s head at centre, drowning sailor and serpent below, imperatrix impudens, rev. signature of the artist, 82mm, 331.60g (Attwood 39; Attwood/Powell p.29, fig. 20; The Medal 10, p.75, and 12, pp.61-4; BM Acq. 1983-7, p.85, 177; cf. Baldwin 74, 1833; cf. Noonans 311, 606). Extremely fine, dark patina as issued £150-£200 --- Edition of 56. At the time this medal caused considerable controversy, with the couplet imperatrix impudens [shameless Empress] linked to a characteristic hectoring pose of a death’s head intended to be associated with Margaret Thatcher (1925-2013), Prime Minister at the time of the Falklands War. The General Belgrano, an Argentine light cruiser, was torpedoed and sunk by the Royal Navy submarine Conqueror on 2 May 1982, with the loss of 323 lives

Muller, three-quarter bust of Tromp turned slightly to right, wearing badge of the Order of St. Michael, all within a wide ornate border, rev. view of the naval engagement at Scheveningen, ship sinking in foreground, 80mm, 99.88g (v. Loon II, 364.3; MI I, 404/35; BDM IV, 195; E 186a; cf. Schulman 381, 1508; cf. DNW 186, 1248). Wide border both sides, mount removed from edge at 12 o’clock, otherwise very fine £300-£400 --- Provenance: Bt A.C. Eimer October 2004. Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp (1598-1653), army general and admiral in the Dutch navy during much of the Eighty Years' War and throughout the First Anglo-Dutch War, until he was killed by a sharpshooter at the battle of Scheveningen on 10 August 1653
