Lot 26

1934 Humber 12 Cross and Ellis TourerReg. no. ANF 14Chassis no. 6275Engine no. 6381Like many other car makers in the Midlands, Thomas Humber started making bicycles first in Nottingham, then Beeston before acquiring factories in Coventry and Wolverhampton where he made the Safety Bicycle from 1886 onwards. Humber Ltd Coventry was formed in 1898 and the first vehicles produced were basically The French Leon Bollee which they built under license. In 1903 they introduced the very successful Humberette which was powered by a single cylinder De Dion Bouton engine. By the end of 1906 Humber was one of the largest car manufacturers in Britain. In 1928 Humber bought their neighbours Hillman and in 1932 both names were acquired by the Rootes Group.Under Rootes ownership the models moved up-market. The smallest car was the 1669cc Twelve. A variety of bodyworks were offered on this chassis of which 8486 were made. It is believed this example is one of seven made with Cross and Ellis open coachwork. The car was bought by the present owner in 2017 as a partly restored project and then restored over the next 18 months. The car was returned to its original blue colour, a buff logbook in the file has blue crossed and substituted with white, and the interior trimmed in navy. The bodywork is in excellent condition and we are informed by the owner that the car runs and drives well. The original hood is in situ.; the side screens are present, but they are yet to be restored. The car comes with a current V5c, a buff continuation logbook, an original 1933 Humber Spares Catalogue, original 12 instruction book, original Lucas running instructions for lighting and starting equipment for Humber cars, and other period and copies of advertising for the car.Estimate: £12,000 – 15,000To be auctioned along with a fantastic selection of other vehicles on March 5th at our Showell Farm site, SN15 2NU. Viewing is welcome prior to sale and all cars are sold as seen, condition reports can be requested on each lot by contacting us direct. Lots are not available to buy prior to auction. Fully illustrated catalogue is available on the Richard Edmonds Auction website. Bids can be made online, by telephone or live on site. All lots are subject to commission.Vehicles that are un-registered or on foreign plates may require Import Duty and Vat to be paid upon purchase via HMRC prior to registering with the DVLA for a UK plate, if you are not sure please ask. For classic cars over 30 years this equates to 5% Duty on the final value.
