Newlyn School copper charger/circular wall plaque, having Arts & Crafts design embossed decoration depicting a dolphin to the centre within a conforming border, 59cm diameter Condition: Hook attached to back with solder and one other area of solder by the dolphin's eye, this does not appear to go through to the front - ** General condition consistent with age
*Martin (Henry, 1835-1908). Shipping in Plymouth Sound, Mount Edgecombe, & Under Mount Edgecombe, together three oil paintings on wood panel, each signed lower right, 14 x 23 cm (5.5 x 9 ins) and very similar, matching modern antique-style gilt frames, with title and artist's name to lower edge Henry Martin studied in Antwerp under Frank Vinck, and exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1874 and 1894, mainly scenes in Devon and Cornwall. He is regarded as a precursor of the Newlyn School, being the first artist to discover the village, and lived there until he left circa 1880, before the arrival of Walter Langley, Edwin Harris, Henry Scott Tuke and Stanhope Forbes. By 1887 he was living in Saltash near Plymouth. (1)
