David Renka (American, b.1952). 'The Artist and his Public', 2000. A wall plaque depicting a part male nude, and eye at window. Terracotta. 18.5 x 19.5cm. Purchased directly from the artist in 2005. From the Trevor Baxter collection of contemporary art. Trevor Baxter was a character actor perhaps best known for his cult role as Professor George Lightfoot in Dr. Who in 1977. He also appeared in shows and films including Z-Cars (1968), and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004). Trevor, who was a passionate collector of contemporary art, sadly passed away in 2017.

Paul Granlund (American, 1925-2003). Colored pencil on paper drawing of a seated nude figure, shown from the back. Signed in red pencil and dated 1976 along the lower right edge. With a label from Premier Gallery affixed to the verso of the frame.Lot Essay:Paul Granlund was born in 1923 in Minneapolis. His father was a Lutheran pastor, who instilled in him the background in religion which would provide a major inspiration for his work throughout his life. After high school, Granlund served in World War II, an experience which deeply affected him, strengthening his interest in understanding and conveying the human experience in all its facets.Following the war, Granlund went to Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota. He graduated with his BA in 1952, then, after some graduate work at the University of Minnesota, moved to Michigan to continue his education at Cranbrook Academy of Art, from which he graduated with his MFA in 1954. He received the Fulbright scholarship to study sculpture in Italy, and on this trip and a subsequent period of study as a Guggenheim Fellow in Rome, he was exposed to important works of traditional sculpture as well as new sculptural techniques.After studying in Italy, Granlund returned to Minnesota, and was a faculty member at the Minnesota College of Art and Design throughout the 1960s. He returned to Gustavus Adolphus as sculptor in residence in 1971, a title he kept until 1996, when he retired, although he kept a studio at Gustavus Adolphus until his death in 2003. His art adorns much of the campus there, often demonstrating his adeptness at using sculpture as a method of Biblical interpretation.During his long career, Granlund taught and exhibited throughout the United States, as well as creating many important pieces of public art, including the Vietnam War Memorial at the Minnesota GovernorÃs Mansion. His dedication to creating all parts of the sculpture himself, including casting his own bronze, made him unique among sculptors, as did his versatility, with his sculptures ranging from traditional-seeming figural works to mind-bending abstract pieces.Sight; height: 13 1/4 in x width: 7 3/4 in. MANNER OF TIEPOLO (16TH/17TH CENTURY) Figures with a chest Pen, ink and brown wash Inscribed number 207 within a blue stamp Mounted; together with another Old Master drawing of a figural group Ink and brown wash Inscribed lower left Mounted and framed Giovanni Battista Tiepolo was a Venetian painter and printmaker of the Rococo period. He was known as one of the main artists of the 18th century working in the idealised style of the Grand Manner of the High Renaissance. His work was theatrical, celebrating artistic imagination and fantasy in creating compositions filled with characters from ancient mythology. He was equally respected for his draughtmanship, creating highly skilled drawings and oil sketches and enjoyed a very successful career as a printmaker. Drawings of this kind were very common in the period, often acting as preparatory pen and ink sketches for larger scale compositions. Artists drew on subject matter of classical mythology, depicting stories of gods and goddesses particularly known for their drama and eroticism. This work potentially tells the story of Diana and Actaeon, the latter who stumbled upon Diana while she was bathing and, in her surprise, and fear she splashed him with water transforming him into deer. Depicting the nude body, particularly that of female figures was a skill honed through the act of drawing. and these mythological subjects offered ample opportunity to practice. In this work it appears that we have interrupted her in the act of bathing with the shallow pool of water at her feet and attendants on hand, removing water jugs from the trunk to help wash her. The look on her face as she turns to stand is one of surprise or of shock, potentially caused by the arrival of an unknown figure, a hunter visible through the archway in the top right corner. She attempts to protect her modesty with arms raised to cover her breast while she and her attendant struggle to drape her with a robe. As work it is filled with excitement and movement, sketched quickly by the artist, depicting the moments before the action, filled with anticipation and high drama.

Oz was an alternative underground counterculture magazine first published in Sydney in 1963, and London from 1967, the creators of Oz were prosecuted on charges of obscenity with final issue of the magazine released in 1973.
