MANNER OF ROBERT MACBRYDE (SCOTTISH 1913 - 1966), NUDE STUDY pencil on paper, signedmounted, framed and under glassimage size 53cm x 27cm, overall size 79cm x 53cmNote: Robert MacBryde was a Scottish still-life and figure painter and a theatre set designer. MacBryde was born in Maybole, Ayrshire, to John MacBryde, a cement labourer, and Agnes Kennedy MacBryde. He worked in a factory for five years after leaving school before studying art at Glasgow School of Art from 1932 to 1937. There, he met Robert Colquhoun, with whom he established a lifelong romantic relationship and professional collaboration, the pair becoming known as "the two Roberts". MacBryde studied and travelled in France and Italy, assisted by scholarships, returning to London in 1939. He shared studio space with Colquhoun, and the pair shared a house with John Minton and, from 1943, Jankel Adler. MacBryde held his first one-person exhibition at the Lefevre Gallery in 1943. At the height of their acclaim they courted a large circle of friends - including Michael Ayrton, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud and John Minton as well as the writers Fred Urquhart, George Barker, Elizabeth Smart, and Dylan Thomas - and were renowned for their parties at their studio (77 Bedford Gardens). Influenced by Graham Sutherland and John Piper, MacBryde became a well-known painter of the Modernist school of art, known for his brightly coloured Cubist studies. His later work evolved into a darker, Expressionist range of still lifes and landscapes. In collaboration with Colquhoun, he created several set designs during and after the Second World War. These included sets for Gielgud's Macbeth, King Lear at Stratford and Massine's Scottish ballet Donald of the Burthens, produced by the Sadler's Wells Ballet at Covent Garden in 1951. During the 1950s, both MacBryde and Colquhoun lost the attention of the art scene, and as both had become heavy drinkers, serious artistic work became almost impossible. Since neither had any private means, they were reduced at times to near destitution.

λ PIA STADTBAUMER (GERMAN B. 1959) ANDROGYNE, TWO FIGURES Mixed media sculpture Each 185cm (72¾in.) High (2)Executed in 1993. Provenance: Sale, Christie's, Post-War & Contemporary Art, 6 April 2005, lot 193 Acquired from the above by the present owner The German artist Pia Stadtbäumer is known for her figurative sculptures and installations. A student of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and a professor at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts, Stadtbäumer's style and subject emerged early in her career. Though they are grounded in sound anatomical study and compelling detail, there is a certain strangeness to Stadtbäumer's life-size sculpted figures. Whether these are adults with childlike features or, as in this case, hermaphroditic composites, the artist challenges preconceived notions of human representation. The defiant posture of this pair is a testament to Stadtbäumer's assertive, single-minded practice. In a sense, Stadtbäumer reverses the Renaissance paradigm according to which artists 'considered the female [physique] inferior to the male' (Kenneth Clark, The Nude, 330). Where Michelangelo endows masculine physiques with female markers of sex, Stadtbäumer does the opposite. Her rendering of the human body updates this figurative tradition in line with contemporary revisions of gender norms.
λ  GILLIAN CARNEGIE (BRITISH B. 1971) UNTITLED Oil on board Signed twice and dated 1998 (verso) 32 x 23cm (12½ x 9 in.) Unframed Provenance: Sale, Christie's, New York, Post War and Contemporary Art, 14 November 2007, lot 347 Working in the realist tradition, Gillian Carnegie is a consummate technician in oils. A Turner Prize nominee, Carnegie has received solo exhibitions at Andrea Rosen Gallery, New York, Cabinet Gallery, London, and the Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin. The artist has experimented with patterned abstraction, but is better known for her tonal landscapes, still lives, and nude snapshots. Carnegie's figure paintings recall the graceful women of classical statuary, such as Sleeping Hermaphroditus, and related Old Master pictures including the Rokeby Venus, while also channelling a distinctly contemporary impulse in their unaffected intimacy. The artist's restrained palette foregrounds the play of light over flesh, which allows Carnegie to showcase her technical prowess. Her deft modelling of form is complemented by the close-cropped framing of her subjects, which gives the impression of spontaneous authenticity. In Untitled, Carnegie renders planes and shapes with a sculptural, monumental quality, as they are thrown into relief by smooth blends and soft shadows. Thus does Carnegie pedestalise the nude without idealising its form, honouring the human body with progressive verve. Condition Report: Other than some small losses of paint near the edges of the canvas, the painting is in good condition Condition Report Disclaimer
λ  GILLIAN CARNEGIE (BRITISH B. 1971) SUGAR SHACK Oil on board Signed and dated 1999 twice and titled (verso) 23 x 33cm (9 x 12 in.) Unframed Provenance: Sale, Christie's, London, Post-War & Contemporary Art, 1 July 2008, lot 499 Working in the realist tradition, Gillian Carnegie is a consummate technician in oils. This picture's title, Sugar Shack, is more likely a suggestive allusion to the cultivation of maple syrup than an homage to Ernie Barnes' 1976 painting of joyous dancers by the same name. Indeed, there is an insistent tranquillity to much of Carnegie's work - this being no exception - that invests her everyday subjects with a certain stateliness. Sugar Shack is equally remarkable as a formal exercise and an elevation of the human body. Condition Report: Other than some small losses of paint near the edges of the canvas, the painting is in good condition Condition Report Disclaimer
