An early French Palissy style dish, c.1600, the circular dish modelled with an openwork design of six cherub masks alternating with leaf motifs on a reticulated foliate ground, decorated in a limited palette of blue, green, manganese and ochre, a few small chips to the underside of the rim, 25.5cm.Cf. Vase, Paris, Frankreich, 19. Jh., sign., Narcisse Vivien, ein Kardinalvogel auf einem blühendem Obstast, auf silbernen Fond, ziervergoldet, ber., H. 24,5 cm, ähnliche Exemplare wurden für die Weltausstellung 1878 geschaffen und ausgestellt, sehr in Zeichen des Japonismus jener Zeit. Narcisse Vivien, ein auf Vögel spezialisierter Tiermaler und Professor an der Ecole de Bernard Palissy, war zwischen 1875 und 1900 tätig. Einige seiner Vasen mit Vögeln auf Platinuntergrund wurden 1878 auf der Weltausstellung in Paris ausgestellt. Er nahm auch am Salon des Artistes français im Jahr 1886 teil.

He is the founder of the 'Parisian School', which is part of the neo-Palissy movement of the 19th C.A merchant from Dijon, he set up his workshop in Paris in 1850. In 1858, he obtained the gold medal for ceramics in Dijon. His productions are characterized by an intense blue background.
