A George V Silver Wall-Sconce. by Lionel Alfred Crichton, London, 1914, Britannia Standard each in the Charles II or William and Mary style, the shaped backplate with an openwork vase issuing foliage and above an engraved coat-of-arms, with scroll branch and single arm18.5cm high, 7oz 17dwt, 244grFully marked on bottom edge. The maker's mark to the left of the sconce and the other marks to the right. The marks are generally clear. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The edge of the wax pan with some obvious bruising all the way around.

A SILVER INLAID AND MOUNTED FLINTLOCK PISTOL BY WILLIAM WEEKES, LONDON The maker's name engraved to brass lock plate, the brass barrel engraved "London" with corresponding proof marks, the silver butt plate hallmarked with Lion Passant, an apparent portrait head and maker's mark "M.B"; barrel measures approx. 15.5cm in length; the whole approx. 29cm Condition Report:"Lock mechanism functions well, holding half and full-cock securely. Trigger releases hammer with a forceful action. Trigger with a little play at all stages. The jaw screw turns freely. Frizzen moves smoothly and is held firmly by its spring.The silver butt-plate is held slightly loose, with play. Tarnish generally to all metal components, with verdigris surrounding pan and muzzle. Knocks and scratches to brass barrel. Splits to wood near muzzle, with small chips and losses elsewhere. One more significant loss above butt end of lock-plate. Silver inlaid decoration on plain side is lifting in places, with a split near to centre. Multiple knocks to stock, consistent with age."

Jaw screw is resistant to being turned, though there is a modern flint fitted - so presumably it was successfully adjusted relatively recently. Ramrod is held fairly loosely in its housing.In good overall condition. All metal components are tarnished, with spots of surface rust and general pitting to barrel, lock-plate, hammer, frizzen and belt hook. Stock is well patinated and knocked/scratched in many areas, particularly to butt. Heaviest patination around pan."

† AN IMPRESSIVE RARE SET OF OERTLING-TYPE BANKER'S OR ASSAY OFFICE PRECISION BULLION BALANCE SCALESDE GRAVE, SHORT AND COMPANY, LONDON, LATE 19th/EARLY 20th CENTURYThe black japanned cast iron upright of tapered pierced pylon form united by a transverse arched lacquered brass bridge at the top set with a steel bed for the knife-edge pivot and inscribed TO WEIGH 1000 OZ TR to front edge, between the uprights to the centre is a cast V-shaped frame supported between channelled pulley-guides and resting on a roller and cam assembly in the base to allow rise/fall locking/releasing of the balance crossmember by taking the load from each end via substantial brass brackets, the balance arm of pierced elongated triangular form with knife-edge at the centre and for each of the opposing suspension pivot points with the right-hand forming a copper pan suspended from chains and the left with copper platform applied to a stiff chrome-plated cradle, the front of the beam engraved DE GRAVE & SHORT & Co. LTD, MAKERS, LONDON and the centre with long open-framed inverted triangular pointer reading against a cream ivorine scale divided into tenths in each direction opposing a ball-shaped counterweight, now mounted on a square mahogany plinth.118cm (46.5ins) high, 87.5cm (34.5ins) wide excluding pans 32.5cm (12.75ins) deep. Provenance:The property of a central London financial institution forming part of a collection housed in a purpose-built prestigious Georgian style office building furnished prior to 1925. The De Grave family were well known as scientific instrument makers specialising in weights and measures throughout the 19th century. The first member to set up business was Charles de Grave who is recorded in Clifton, Gloria Directory of British Scientific Instrument Makers 1550-1851 as working in St. Martin's le Grand from 1780. Clifton notes several subsequent partnerships between various members of the DeGrave family including DeGrave, Short and Fanner who are noted as specialist balance and weight makers working from 59 St. Martin's Le Grand, London 1845-71. The DeGrave business was eventually taken over by W. and T. Avery and Company Limited in the early 20th century. This type of balance was developed by Ludwig Oertling who is recorded by Clifton as working from several addresses in London 1846-1925. He was appointed by the Bank of England and Board of Trade and was succeeded by his son, Henry, after his death in 1893. The business was also taken over by W. and T. Avery and Company Limited in around 1925.
