Having worked on the land during the war as a harvester and a labourer, he was well acquainted with farm life and rural life in general. He filled several sketchbooks with images of woodsmen, dairy-workers, sowers, fruit pickers, harvesters and, as in the present example, with farmhands working with machinery. Probably derived from observational drawings made in situ, Vaughan has worked this study with combinations of pen and Indian ink, gouache and pastel, later in his studio. We are grateful to Gerard Hastings, whose forthcoming book on Vaughan's graphic art will be published shortly by Pagham Press, for compiling this catalogue entry. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
