He married Katherine Wright, a daughter of Sir Edmund Wright, Lord Mayor of London, and inherited Swakeleys House from Wright. As a Major-General in the Parliamentarian army during the English Civil War, Harrington fought at the Battle of Cropredy Bridge. Although he did not sign the death warrant, Harrington was one of the Commissioners at the trial of Charles I. During the Interregnum he continued to serve the Parliamentary cause, and after the Restoration he was exempted from the Indemnity and Oblivion Act which pardoned most from taking up arms against the King in the Civil War. In 1665 Harrington attempted to sell Swakeley to John Morris and Robert Clayton but the sale seems to have been invalid but by September 1665 when Samuel Pepys went to Swakeleys the house and manor were in the possession of Sir Robert Vyner, a London financier and later Lord Mayor.
