(ARR) André Masson (French, 1896 –1987) – Le Coup de Trique (The Cudgel blow), 1936 - A pen and ink on paper sketch drawing. Signed with initial lower right. Label from the Galerie Simon, Paris to back. Mounted, framed & glazed.Andre Masson was a French painter, sculptor, illustrator, designer and writer, born at Balagny (Oise). Spent most of his youth in Brussels, where he worked as pattern-drawer in an embroidery studio and studied part-time at the Académie des Beaux-Arts. Then moved to Paris and studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts 1912-14. Participated from 1924-9 in the Surrealist movement. Made further works exploring chance effects, including sand paintings, as well as paintings of metamorphoses of animal and human forms, themes of germination, combats and massacres, with emphasis on violence and eroticism. Lived 1934-6 in Spain; paintings of bullfights, Spanish myths, etc. Since 1998 the record price for this artist at auction is 3,125,485 USD for GRADIVA, sold at Sotheby's Paris in 2010. In the past 12 months, their paintings have averaged 15,389 USD, while his sculptures have sold for an average of 12,686 USD. Measures approx. 29cm x 23cm excluding frame. From the Cooke Estate Private Collection. The painting having passed down through three generations.
Novo-Hispanic school. Mexico. 18th century."Mystic City"Oil on copper. 39 x 48cm. This splendid Novo-Hispanic copper depicts The Mystical City of God described by St. John the Evangelist in the last book of the New Testament, the Apocalypse. After the struggle between good and evil, when the dragon is defeated by St. Michael and his heavenly hosts, the new creation of Jerusalem takes place. St. John describes a triumphant vision in which Jerusalem is seen as the dwelling place of God among men, where only those who have lived a life of faith will deserve a place in the holy city. On the right, on a mound or mount representing Patmos, is the evangelist John carrying a pen and a book as symbols of his work. To his side is an angel, a reflection of the divine inspiration that seems to dictate and direct what he has to write. A phylactery in Latin proclaims: ET VITAM AETERNUM- AMEN, explaining the sense and purpose of a true mystical life, blessed above from heaven by the Holy Spirit that fills everything and the Father with the orb that blesses what he sees, in the middle of a celestial cohort. We can also contemplate, in the foreground, the image of the Good Shepherd, who leads the flock to that mystical city, “and those who follow me will never perish”.Because of its small format and magnificent workmanship, we believe it may have been commissioned for the personal devotion of a monk or nun, a priest or someone in an elevated position. This painting has a temporary export permit from the Spanish Ministry of Culture (subject to the payment of fees for exports outside the EU).

(11)*** A collection of works by the best-selling author (the pen name of Marion Chesney) including two dedication copies inscribed to a close personal friend. Dexter (Colin) Last Seen Wearing, first edition, signed presentation inscription from the author to James Pickard on title, light browning to margins, some cracking to gutter at title, original boards, light sunning to upper and lower edge, dust-jacket, a few short nicks with creasing to head and foot, pen mark to lower panel, 8vo, 1976.*** The second inspector Morse title.
Waugh (Evelyn) [The Sword of Honour Trilogy], 3 vol., comprising Men at Arms, reprint, inscribed by the author "for J.L. Ebbelwhite from Evelyn Waugh", additionally signed by Anthony Powell underneath "as witnessed by Anthony Powell" on front free endpaper, strip of toning to endpaper, jacket split along lower spine joint and across spine, 1962; Officers and Gentlemen, first edition, inscribed by the author "For J.L. Ebblewhite from Evelyn Waugh" on front free endpaper, 1950; Unconditional Surrender, signed by the author on title, pencil note in another hand on front free endpaper, 1950-62, original boards, spine ends fractionally bumped, dust-jackets, spines faded, extremities a little frayed, light nicks and tears to extremities, lower panels slightly browned, still sharp overall, 8vo.*** Three confident if rather wobbly inscriptions from Waugh, owing both to the tremors of the 12.30 train from Paddington, and perhaps also to the effects of a celebratory lunch after the publication of A Little Learning, which came out the day before. This is inferred from the fact that, borrowing his pen, fellow passenger Anthony Powell felt he needed to corroborate his friend's shaky inscription - "as witnessed by Anthony Powell". The pencil note on Unconditional Surrender confirms this, most likely in the dedicatee's hand. All together a unique and charming set, rarely found with all three volumes signed.
