Lot 75

Novo-Hispanic school. Mexico. 18th century."Mystic City"Oil on copper. 39 x 48cm. This splendid Novo-Hispanic copper depicts The Mystical City of God described by St. John the Evangelist in the last book of the New Testament, the Apocalypse. After the struggle between good and evil, when the dragon is defeated by St. Michael and his heavenly hosts, the new creation of Jerusalem takes place. St. John describes a triumphant vision in which Jerusalem is seen as the dwelling place of God among men, where only those who have lived a life of faith will deserve a place in the holy city. On the right, on a mound or mount representing Patmos, is the evangelist John carrying a pen and a book as symbols of his work. To his side is an angel, a reflection of the divine inspiration that seems to dictate and direct what he has to write. A phylactery in Latin proclaims: ET VITAM AETERNUM- AMEN, explaining the sense and purpose of a true mystical life, blessed above from heaven by the Holy Spirit that fills everything and the Father with the orb that blesses what he sees, in the middle of a celestial cohort.   We can also contemplate, in the foreground, the image of the Good Shepherd, who leads the flock to that mystical city, “and those who follow me will never perish”.Because of its small format and magnificent workmanship, we believe it may have been commissioned for the personal devotion of a monk or nun, a priest or someone in an elevated position. This painting has a temporary export permit from the Spanish Ministry of Culture (subject to the payment of fees for exports outside the EU).

Malleson is best-known by her pen name of Anthony Gilbert. Portrait of a Murderer was her first title published as Meredith, it was reissued in 2017 by British Library Publishing.

Ebblewhite from Evelyn Waugh" on front free endpaper, 1950; Unconditional Surrender, signed by the author on title, pencil note in another hand on front free endpaper, 1950-62, original boards, spine ends fractionally bumped, dust-jackets, spines faded, extremities a little frayed, light nicks and tears to extremities, lower panels slightly browned, still sharp overall, 8vo.*** Three confident if rather wobbly inscriptions from Waugh, owing both to the tremors of the 12.30 train from Paddington, and perhaps also to the effects of a celebratory lunch after the publication of A Little Learning, which came out the day before. This is inferred from the fact that, borrowing his pen, fellow passenger Anthony Powell felt he needed to corroborate his friend's shaky inscription - "as witnessed by Anthony Powell". The pencil note on Unconditional Surrender confirms this, most likely in the dedicatee's hand. All together a unique and charming set, rarely found with all three volumes signed.
