Keith Broomfield - Hawker "Hurricane I" (Rolls Royce "Merlin III") of No. 257 Squadron, Royal Air Force, 1940, signed in red pen by Group Captain Peter Wooldridge Townsend, CVO, DSO, DFC & Bar with the inscription ''43 & 86 Sqns 1939-41", framed, overall dimensions 52cm x 36cm Notes: Group Captain Townsend was a British Royal Air Force officer, flying ace, courtier and author. He was equerry to King George VI from 1944 to 1952 and held the same position for Queen Elizabeth II from 1952 to 1953. Townsend notably had a romance with Princess Margaret, the Queen's younger sister. He is known for assisting in shooting down the first German aircraft to fall on English soil in April 1940 and for being a highly capable Squadron Leader during the Battle of Britain flying Hawker Hurricanes.
Eduard-Maria Joseph Ritter von Schleich (9 August 1888 – 15 November 1947) Bavarian Flying Ace of the First World War, aka 'The Black Knight' an autographed and dated portrait postcard signed in dark fountain pen ink. The postcard shows von Schleich standing in a three-quarter length pose, wearing his military overcoat and cap. Published by Willi Sanke of Berlin during World War I, numbered 578 to the lower left-hand corner. Notes: Although Eduard von Schleich saw action at the front as a fighter pilot for only fourteen months of the First World War, he scored thirty-five victories including some doubles and triples. In addition, this German Ace became the leader of one of four Jagdgeschwaders ("Flying Circuses") in the German Air Service with a rank equal to von Richthofen. Such feats meant that Schleich was awarded the Pour le Mérite (Blue Max) and the Iron Cross First & Second Class. Later, he became one of the most active former First World War pilots in Third Reich politics and Third Reich life. He became a General of the SS, the SA, and the Luftwaffe and was particularly active with the flying corps of the Hitlerjugend (Flieger-Hitler-Jugend).
