Cooper' (upper right), 15.3 x 18.6 cm., together with eight further sketches by the artist, variously signed and inscribed, 29.9 x 22.6 cm. and smaller, a book of six engravings by Cooper, published 30 May 1799, 23 x 27 cm., and a book of 15 pencil sketches of Rome by an unknown Italian artist, 28 x 43.5 cm., eleven (11), (unframed). Provenance: Collection of William Drummond.; Private Collection, UK. Note: For comparison, see the artist's album of drawings which sold at Sotheby's, London, 6 July 2010, lot 213 (£13,750). Cooper Junior was the son of the engraver Richard Cooper (c.1696-1764). Born in Edinburgh, he trained under his father until 1758, and was then in Paris studying under the French engraver Jacques Philippe Le Bas (1707-1783). By 1761 he was living in London and exhibiting drawings and engravings at the Society of Artists. During the early 1760s he toured Spain but by 1786 he had returned to England to take up the position of drawings master at Eton College. Cooper then travelled to Italy in 1771 and was not to return until 1778. Information relating to his Grand Tour is sparse. He is understood to have been acquainted with fellow Scot Jacob More (1740-1793) whilst in Rome. He apparently enjoyed the patronage of Sir William Hamilton (1731-1803) whilst in Naples, and there are references to him travelling with a Thomas Merriman between 1771 and 1772. Upon his return to Britain Cooper settled in Charles Street, Westminster and married Frances Ramsay. He exhibited work at the Royal Academy between 1778 and 1809 and was drawing master to the Prince Regent's daughter, Prince Charlotte (1796-1817).Please refer to department for condition report

λ MICHAEL LEONARD (BRITISH B. 1933)ON THE BED (2)Coloured pencil Signed with initials and dated 76 (lower left)14.5 x 13.2cm (5½ x 5 in.)Provenance:Fischer Fine Art, Ltd., London, no. C. 4465Mr Gonzalez, Private CollectionLexan and Mylar Waef, by June 2008 Sale, Christie's, The Art of Design, 4 June 2014, part lot Regarded as one of Britain's leading photorealist painters most notable for his precise brushwork, tight formed compositions, and distinctive colour palette. Leonard, an exceptionally talented draughtsman started his career as an illustrator and featured notably in The Sunday Times Colour Magazine. By the mid-1970s his attention was turned to fine art. His series 'Portraits in Time' showing figures dressed in the style of Old Masters together with elements of tromp l'oeil proved extremely popular and continue to do so. Leonard was honoured in the mid-1980s to accept the commission to paint the Queen to celebrate her 60th birthday, now held in the National Portrait Gallery.  This collection of figurative drawings highlights Leonard's interest in the human form but even more simply the act of everyday chores and movements. He highlights the graceful movements and unusual shapes a human creates undergoing mundane daily activities, such as putting on a T-shirt or getting out the bath. This detailed study and fascination with the human figure has continued throughout Leonard's body of work. The use of colour highlights the moment-to-moment of everyday actions and frames the peach flesh of the male figure.  Lot 206 and 209 illustrate examples of Leonard's work in monochrome. This series was inspired by the work of Egon Schiele and Georges Seurat. In the work of Schiele Leonard looks towards the erotic power that emanated through Schiele's detailed drawings and the attention to the design and perfection in execution. Leonard admired Seurat's treatment of negative space and how the space around the figures could bring as much energy to a piece as the drawing itself.   Condition Report: Unexamined out of glazed frame. Appears to be in good original condition.  Condition Report Disclaimer

Koerner, William Kentridge: Smoke, Ashes, Fable (Brussels: Mercatorfonds, 2017) p.31Casspirs Full of Love as a group of works is a testament to William Kentridge's multi-disciplinary and multi-layered practice. The various incarnations of the subject, made between 1988 and 1989, include a drawing, an encaustic, a screenprinted banner and the present drypoint, itself printed in two phases, between 1989 and 2000. The satirical title of the work, inscribed prominently to the right in looping cursive handwriting, refers to a personal message overheard by Kentridge on a popular radio program, from a mother to her son in the white South African defence force: this message comes to you from your mom with Casspirs full of love. Casspirs were armoured riot-control vehicles deployed by the South African defence force under the National Party regime of apartheid (1948-94), for the forceful patrol of black townships during the state of emergency declared in 1985 and renewed until 1990, leading to arbitrary racial arrests and persecution. The tense juxtaposition of love and death, affection and violence, also expressed textually: what comfort now? at left, Not A Step at lower centre, highlight the contradictions inherent to the apartheid state. The work also resonates with scenes from William Kentridge's 1989 film Johannesburg, 2nd Greatest City after Paris (see Lot 1 on previous page), while the heads were inspired by drawings the artist made in 1988 in Florence, based on Giotto's early 14th century frescoes in Santa Croce, that he later cut up and rearranged, and were also influenced by a Tony Cragg bronze sculpture of carved beetroot heads he saw in Florence that same year. As William Kentridge said: The print became a combination of Giotto, Cragg and 1980s South African radio. It has come to be known as one of Kentridge's most overtly political projects, and its importance is reflected in the fact that impressions of the print appear in significant international collections such as those of the Metropolitan Museum and the MOMA in New York, the Johannesburg Art Gallery, and the Tate in London.Printmaking has always been primary to Kentridge's practice as an artist, and the highly charged, textural surface and intensity of contrasts in the inking and composition of Casspirs Full of Love demonstrate his masterful exploration of the etching and drypoint mediums. The impression presented here provides the final version of the image as printed by master printer Jack Shirreff at 107 Workshop, Wiltshire, England in 2000. Caroline Wong Magnum, 2022 Acrylic and Pencil on Paper Signed verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About   Caroline Wong's work responds to traditional, restricted representations of East Asian women. For Wong, subverting these ideals is the essence of her practice. Her beginnings, as an artist, lay in more traditional forms of portraiture, yet, as she has grown, she has nurtured the epicurean side of herself, moving towards more excitable, expressive mark-making driven by a hedonistic desire for fun. She likens creating to eating. In both, she becomes consumed by the moment of pleasure, detaching herself from the world. The final image presents a hot, sticky portal of pleasure and the senses. The scintillating heat of her portraits is a visual representation of this joy and decadence, whilst also being reminiscent of the chaos and colour of Southeast Asia. Whether depicting female friendships or obdurately exhibiting female pleasure in food, her work is a joyful push-back against tradition, celebrating the beauty in excess.   Education   2019-2021 Masters in Fine Art, City and Guilds of London Art School, London 2016-2018 Diploma in Contemporary Portraiture, The Art Academy, London   Select Exhibitions/Awards   2022 Angels with Dirty Faces, Ojiri Gallery, London Artificial Paradises (solo), Soho Revue, London Cats and Girls (solo), Soy Capitán, Berlin Go Figure!, Daniel Raphael Gallery, London À la carte, Tchotchke Gallery, New York Eat Drink Man Woman, 180 Strand, London Lotus Eaters, Indigo + Madder, London Friends and Family, Pi Artworks, London In the Land of Cockaigne, Quench Gallery, Margate 2021 ING Discerning Eye, Mall Galleries, London MA Show, City and Guilds of London Art School Drawn Out, Drawing Room, London Drawing Biennial 2021, Drawing Room, London 2019 Society of Women's Artists 158th annual exhibition, The Mall Galleries, London 2018 Society of Women's Artists 157th annual exhibition, The Mall Galleries, London Prizes Drawing Biennial Bursary Award (2021) Liberty Specialty Markets Art Prize (2018) Society of Women Artists' Derwent Special Prize for Materials (2018) Message from Art On A Postcard: Please do not bid if you intend to sell on the artwork. Eugenia Cuellar Pensive, 2022 Watercolour and Pencil on Arches Paper Signed verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About   Eugenia Cuellar's paintings are mainly focused on women and the challenges they have to face in a contemporary world. Women interacting with men and women, in different settings and situations, in non-places, subjected to other people and to social and cultural norms. Sourced from own images, collages or mass media imagery, the people depicted in her compositions are either real or imagined. Ian Ritchie OBE RA Have You Seen My Piano?, 2022 Ink on Paper Signed verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About   I begin developing my art, architecture, and industrial designs through language: poetry, prose, and the occasional aphorism, influenced by subjects ranging from physics and neuroscience to remote landscapes and history. The scientists, artists, actors, and musicians I am lucky enough to call friends lead me to explore and enjoy every wider field of learning, stretching my imagination further. At the stage when I can sense the emerging project, I attempt to translate the concepts visually. Pencil, pen, biro - all instruments that mark are valid. But the greatest pleasure comes when I draw with a Japanese brush soaked in Sumi black ink. The drawing - a few simple lines of architectural calligraphy - attempts to synthesise and reveal the essential from the words in a way that is immediately tangible as an object or space. I then produce these drawings as etchings in the London studio of the artist and printmaker Norman Ackroyd RA - a good friend who taught me to see the rainbow in black. My late friend John Hoyland RA introduced me to the life and language of colour, which resulted in the monoprints I create in Barbara Rae RA's Edinburgh studio. Her friendship and generosity allows me to feel colour while she encourages me to think less. During recent years I have also been producing figurative works which are reproduced as etchings for the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition, and as Christmas cards. My art is held in public collections including the Royal Academy of Arts, Reina Sofia Museum of Modern Art, Madrid, Lodz Gallery, Poland, the Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin, and the Royal Collection Trust / Queen Elizabeth II. I have published several books on architecture and one book of poetry. I am an elected member of the Royal Academy of Arts, and the Akademie der Künste in Berlin, and lead ritchie*studio, an award-winning architecture and design practice renowned for glass architecture, material-technical innovation, and intelligent environmental and sustainable design Message from Art On A Postcard: Please do not bid if you intend to sell on the artwork. We surveil our own lives (reflectively), we surveil our profession (linkd In), online we also surveil new people we've just met, people we'd like to have sex with, we surveil celebrities, and (doubling down on the surveillance!) we do most of this as we look down on our phones... like a CCTV camera; we become the surveillance gaze. This gaze creates a thread through all my work, but also gives me the freedom to consider all sorts of subjects.
