TOCQUEVILLE (Alexis de): 17 leaves from Gustave de Beaumont's autograph manuscript, likely working draft for the first complete edition of Tocqueville's works after his death, comprising 3 pages of a letter to John Stuart Mill dated Paris 1839, another dated 1840 and a third 1847: together with transcription of a 6 page letter to Henry Reeve, Paris 1849: each sheet marked in pencil by printer with corresponding galley numbers, together with mid-c20 typed letter to Professor Hayek regarding the location of a collection of letters from Mill to Tocqueville, plus a few related notes, and printed flyer advertising de Tocqueville's 'Oeuvres Completes', dated 1951.Alexis de Tocqueville, thinker and writer on politics, travelled extensively in America in the company of his friend and confidente Gustave de Beaumont, the trip inspiring the seminal work 'De La Democratie en Amerique' (1835): this group relates directly and once formed a part of material seen in Lot: 272, Bonhams, 11 Nov 2015. (Small quantity)

Gladys Louise Smith (April 8, 1892 - May 29, 1979), known professionally as Mary Pickford, was a Canadian-born film actress and producer. She was a co-founder of both the Pickford-Fairbanks Studio (along with Douglas Fairbanks) and, later, the United Artists film studio (with Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin and D. W. Griffith), and one of the original 36 founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences who present the yearly Oscar award ceremony. Pickford was known in her prime as America's Sweetheart and the girl with the curls. She was one of the Canadian pioneers in early Hollywood and a significant figure in the development of film acting. Pickford was one of the earliest stars to be billed under her own name and was one of the most popular actresses of the 1910s and 1920s, earning the nickname Queen of the Movies. She is credited as having defined the ingénue archetype in cinema. Horse Racing Red Rum 27x22 overall framed colour print signed in pencil by the artist Neil Cowthorne and the horses trainer Donald Ginger McCain (85/846). Donald Ginger McCain (21 September 1930 - 19 September 2011) was an English horse trainer who led the champion steeplechaser Red Rum to three Grand National victories in the 1970s. A former national serviceman in the Royal Air Force as a motorcycle despatch rider, he was also a member of the RAF scrambling team. Red Rum (bay gelding; 3 May 1965 - 18 October 1995) was a champion Thoroughbred steeplechaser. He achieved an unmatched historic treble when he won the Grand National in 1973, 1974 and 1977, and also came second in the two intervening years (1975 & 1976). The Grand National is a notoriously difficult race that has been described as the ultimate test of a horse's courage. He was also renowned for his jumping ability, having not fallen in 100 races. Rare 1923 Captain Crawshay's Welsh Rugby XV Reunion Signed Dinner Menu - scarce and sought-after single foldover card held at The Queen's Hotel Cardiff on July 2nd 1923. This now-famous invitational touring side, still going strong today, had only been formed a year earlier but had clearly already developed an eye for tradition with this 'annual' event. Neat card with 18 clear autographs in pencil, including the club founder, Capt. Geoffrey Crawshay, and a host of ex-Wales, Lions, Newport and other players, including Harry Uzzell, Paul Baker-Jones, Arthur Cornish, Fred Birt, Reg Plummer, Steve Morris, 'Wick' Powell, in whose career the founder took particular interest and toured him when 16, D G Davies, J H Davies, Ossie Male and Tommy Vile.
