Circle of James Abbott McNeill Whistler, American, 1834-1903- Study of a reclining nude; pencil on buff paper, 19x28cm Note:The positioning and composition of the sitter is similar to that of the painting "Symphony in White, no.3", c.1865-7 (Barber Institute) and bearing a striking resemblance to the overall finished composition. (the head, arms and sofa in particular with subtle changes to the seating) The Pre-Raphaelite influence is clear in this particular painting especially that of Rossetti, the painting was an early experiment in white on white, with a woman in a white dress in front of a white background. Three paintings that would be given the titles of Symphony in White, No.1 and No.2 (1864) and Symphony in White, No.3 (1865-67). The sitter appears almost confrontational, with her direct gaze at the viewer; her features are strong and highly individualised. His famous signature in the shape of a stylised butterfly possessing a long stinger for a tail. The symbol was apt, for it combined both aspects of his personality, his art was characterized by a subtle delicacy, (displayed especially in the contours of his nudes) while his public persona was considered abrupt.
