The ‘Dawn Patrol’ that occurred…..at Night! BISHOP W. A. BILLY: (1894-1956) Canadian Air Marshal, a flying ace of World War I credited with 72 victories and thus the top Canadian and British Empire ace of the war. Victoria Cross winner for his aerial actions during an attack on a German aerodrome on 2nd June 1917 during World War I. D.S., W. A. Bishop, as Commander of 85 Squadron, one page, 4to, n.p. (France), 16th June 1918. The partially printed document, completed in typescript, is a Combat Report (headed Combats in the Air) relating to two aerial victories achieved by Bishop in his SE5A (C1904) biplane fighter, the narrative stating, in full, 'At 8-20 p.m. 1,8000 feet 5 miles East of Armentieres. I chased a two-seater from our side of the lines climbing up to him finally getting to 100 yards range fired 20 rounds from each gun. E[nemy]. A[ircraft]. smoked then burst into flames and fell. At 8-28 p.m. 8,000 feet, over Armentieres. 4 Albatross scouts attacked me from the sun and head on continued their dive to 4,000 feet below me. I watched for a few minutes and dived onto rear one, opened fire at 75 yards from behind and in the sun. E.A. went down vertically and crashed on western edge of Armentieres. E.A. dived to below me I think owing to presence of one of our formations 3 or 4 thousand feet above.' Matted in black alongside a colour 6 x 4 postcard reproduction of Robert Taylor's painting (erroneously) entitled The Dawn Patrol with printed text relating to the artwork stating, in part, 'On 16th June 1918 Major W. A. (Billy) Bishop VC took off at dawn on a patrol in search of enemy aircraft. Climbing his flight of SE5A's to 8000 feet above Armentieres, Northern France, he located and destroyed one enemy aircraft and followed this some eight minutes later by destroying a second……Robert Taylor's new painting “The Dawn Patrol” portrays Billy Bishop and the pilots of 85 Squadron as they climb their SE5A fighters into the cool morning sunlight above the fields of Northern France'. Framed and glazed in a decorative silver coloured frame to an overall size of 20 x 18. Some light discoloration to the edges of the document and minor age wear. Together with a colour 31.5 x 24 limited edition print of The Dawn Patrol by artist Robert Taylor, the image depicting Bishop in flight in his SE5A (C1904) biplane fighter in the sunlit clouds over Armentieres, accompanied by two other pilots of 85 Squadron. Published by the Military Gallery of Bath in 1988 and signed to the lower margin in bold pencil by the artist Robert Taylor (also numbered 785 of 1000) and the pilots Gwilym Hugh Lewis (1897-1996) British Wing Commander, a flying ace of World War I credited with 12 victories, and Robert Chidlaw-Roberts (1896-1989) British Flight Lieutenant, a flying ace of World War I credited with ten victories. Rolled and with one minor surface crease. A remarkable pair of signed items. G to VG, 2Robert Taylor's excellent painting The Dawn Patrol would appear to have been meticulously researched; the artist and publishers taking note of the correct aircraft and serial number Bishop was flying, as well as the correct altitude, location and date of the ace's flight on 16th June 1918. However, Taylor, widely regarded as the world's premier painter of aviation subjects, made two mistakes in The Dawn Patrol, as clearly confirmed by Bishop's Combat Report - firstly, Bishop was flying alone and, most importantly, the combat occurred at night, at 8.20 pm and 8,28 pm, and not at dawn.

[COGNAC]: An important autograph manuscript by Henri Guilbault entitled Memoire sur un nouvel appareil de distillation continue au moyen de la vapeur ('Memoir on a new apparatus for continuous distillation by means of steam'), eighty-eight pages, folio, n.p., n.d. (early 1850s), in French. The neatly penned manuscript, containing various corrections and additions, as well as numerous variations (in particular significant unpublished sections) to the final published version, concerns the distillation of eaux-de-vie, and particularly cognac, from Saintonge, the region of France famous for its grapes. If it is true that trade and consumption in general generally regret the abandonment that was made for some time of the old distillation apparatus, because of the quality of the products it gave, it was necessary to strain in a new device, to produce the same effect as the old one, on the condition however that it could always be used in all countries with distillation, whatever the nature and origin of the alcoholic products'…..[published] 'The Saintonge eaux-de-vie, so justly renamed, to which the name of Cognac brandy has been wrongly given, are so superior in quality, because of their special taste and aroma, that no one does not think of converting the white wines of the country into what are called three-sixes or alcohols of a very high degree……..The goal I must have set myself, for the moment at least, could not have been to make a device to produce three-sixes, but rather to find the means of making good spirits, much quicker and cheaper, as regards the manufacture, than any system employed in this country and everywhere else. It is not, however, that with my apparatus, one cannot very easily make three-sixes, if one wishes, since by rectifying a product several times, one must succeed in separating the aqueous parts from the alcoholic parts at the means of distillation, continuing to use the system which is the fundamental basis of my system'). The manuscript is bound together with Guilbault's own final printed copy of his work published by La Librairie Bourbaud, Saintes, in 1854, and includes patent diagrams of the distillation apparatus as well as numerous pencil annotations in his hand to the margins. Also included within the volume is the autograph manuscript of Guilbault's memoir entitled De l'education, des Moeurs, des Institutions politiques chez les anciens & de leurs resultats (Translation: 'On Education, Customs, Political Institutions among the Ancients & their results'), comprising over one hundred folio pages, with extensive corrections, and several other printed works authored by Guilbault. All are contained within their original paper wrappers and the ensemble neatly bound within a folio volume with a gilt stamped title to the spine and bearing the ex-libris of Martineau of Saintonge. Some light age wear, generally VGIt would appear that the process for distilling Saintonge's cognac eaux-de-vie, developed by Guilbault, the main purpose of which was to avoid direct contact between the fire and the boiler, contact which produces irregularities of taste in the alcohol, was not adopted as in 1870 coal was still used for the direct heating of boilers in the region of Saintonge.

The author defends his novel Ferdydurke, and expresses his disappointment with the French intellectual Roger Caillois, in full, 'Mr. Marill Alberes informed me of your decision to submit my novel "Ferdydurke" to Mr. Roger Caillois who is a reader of South American literature at Gallimard. I admit that this decision saddened me a great deal. Mr. Caillois has a mentality, a philosophy, a temperament more opposed to mine and it is absolutely logical that he is hardly a friend of my book. He already knows it and I was told he disliked it. However, "Ferdydurke" was very highly qualified, I am not exaggerating, by many intellectuals and I am convinced that its case is serious enough for me to dare to ask you to have it examined by other people. It is certainly a very particular and combative book which provoked a hostile reaction in certain circles but also a real enthusiasm in others. I would also like to emphasize that I am not a South American author, but a Polish one, and if I am presenting the Spanish translation to Mr. Gallimard it is for practical reasons. If, therefore, you find that it is possible to choose another reader for "Ferdydurke" please let me know your decision and I will send you other copies immediately').  (iii) T.L.S., R M Alberes by Rene Marill Alberes (1921-1982) French writer and literary critic, one page, 4to, Buenos Aires, 28th November 1949, to Raymond Queneau, on the printed stationery of the Institut Francais d'Etudes Superieures, in French. A.L.S., Ray Holmes, two pages, 8vo, Heswall, Wirral, Merseyside, 5th August 1891, to Paul. Holmes refers to a photograph (no longer present) in which he believes he recognises a squadron bulldog, Scruffy, and also refers to other individuals, including Amy Johnson, and concludes by wishing his correspondent good luck with their project, commenting 'pity a lot more people don't have hobbies these days to keep them off the heroin!'. Buch individually; Edward Morris (1915-1999) South African flying ace of World War II who participated in the Battle of Britain. Typed Statement signed, one page, 4to, n.p., n.d. The text relates to a flying incident during the Battle of Britain and states, in part, 'On Friday, 30 August began the “Bad Weekend” at Biggin Hill….Teddy Morris was leading six Hurricanes of 79 Squadron overhead on aerodrome defence when he saw eighteen Heinkels escorted by some twenty fighters….He had sent one section to keep the fighters busy while he led the other two Hurricanes down almost vertically through the bomber formation, with the intention of splitting it up. He saw too late that the second vic were flying very close behind the three leading Heinkels and that the gap through which he had to dive at 400 m.p.h. or so was much narrower than he had supposed; and at the last moment he saw that the second vic were not in line with the first but stepped up above them. He went straight into a Heinkel in the second vic. “All I saw was a grey blur, and felt an awful thump on my right wing. I immediately went into a violent spin. I tried to get out of the cockpit and succeeded after what seemed an age but in reality was only a few seconds. There was no hesitancy to jump….” Away to one side, he could see the Heinkel plunging to earth, both engines on fire and the best part of both wings gone…..Morris was to become famous as the pilot who put in a claim for “one Heinkel confirmed destroyed, by collision”….' Together with a 7 x 10.5 printed image neatly removed from a book depicting a Hurricane in flight after having lost a wing, signed by Morris in black ink with his name alone to a light area at the base of the image. An outstanding archive relating to the establishment of a dynamite factory in Italy, comprising - (i) A.L.S., A Nobel, three pages, 4to, Paris, 6th September 1872, to [Paul] Barbe, in French. Nobel provides his detailed requirements for establishing a factory to produce dynamite at Avigliana, near Turin, under the guidance of his agent Casimir Robaudi ('Voici le petit devis pour la Fabrique Italienne et le projet de contrat avec Robaudi') setting out his requirements in a detailed table, with their immediate and defrayable costs, including specifications for brick buildings, power of the traction engines, nitrite grinders, and other machinery, a building to house nitric acid, an ice room, various other wooden buildings for the production and washing of glycerine and dynamite, and for packing the dynamite, cartridge making, water heaters, and enclosures, and remarking that he envisages the quick production and sale of the dynamite, financed by three months' credit. Nobel then proceeds to define the terms of the contract under which the business should operate, giving the outlines for a five-year contract with Robaudi in nine numbered paragraphs, explaining that Robaudi will be named as agent for the Italian business and will be responsible for the costs of selling the dynamite sent to him, for which he can set a price above market rates, provided that the company can cancel the contract if Robaudi's consumption and marketing contravenes their policies, or if the company does not receive payment for the dynamite. Nobel advises Barbe to revise the contract as he sees fit before sending it to Carstens, the merchant in Hamburg. (ii) A fine, large original pen and ink plan of the proposed site of the dynamite factory in the Commune di Avigliana, prepared and signed by the surveyor Giuseppe Ferando, one page, large oblong folio, Turin, 27th July 1872, entitled Planimetria di parte della regione Valoja presso il trucco di San Martino, coloured in two shades of blue (one defining the waterways) and also featuring light pencil drawings of buildings to the left margin. (iii) A pencil sketch of several buildings at Avigliana entitled Croquis de fabrique de nitroglycerine a Avigliana, one page, oblong 4to, n.p., n.d., including the facilities labelled for 'Preparation, separation et lavage a l'eau'. (iv) A finely executed and detailed pen and ink plan of various constructions and buildings, one page, oblong folio, n.p., n.d., captioned in French, including cartoucheries, magasin, filtrage & dynamiterie, lavages, pompe pour l'appareil, glacier & magasin a glycerine, hanger a bomb acide nitrique. (Italy), 9th April 1872, commencing 'Flammable materials, such as phosphorus, phosphor matches, gun powder, turpentine, alcohol, and derivatives, objects for fireworks and any other material…..that easily starts or transmits fire, are excluded from transport if the sender has not subjected himself to the cautionary measures established by the administration' and continuing to outline the regulations concerning packaging, supervision, means of transport and other precautions which it is necessary to adhere to. (vii) Small collection of ten manuscript technical and legal documents, in Italian and French, over twenty pages in total, largely 4to, various places, 1870s, some regarding Nobel's patent and one on the printed stationery of the Dinamite Nobel factory at Avigliana. (viii) Autograph manuscript of the Atto di Costituzione della Societa per la Fabbricazione della Dinamite and Statuto della Scoieta Anonima per la Fabbricazione della Dinamite, in all over sixty pages, folio, Turin, 5th June 1873, in Italian, identifying the main shareholders, and accompanied by an eleven-page summary including a manuscript list of the shares allocated to each shareholder. A comprehensive archive relating to the Swedish chemist's important invention of dynamite and featuring an extremely rare autograph letter signed by Nobel himself, particularly desirable owing to its content. Some light overall age wear and minor faults and Nobel's letter with some light, minor staining and a few small tears to the edges. Generally G to about VG, Sml Qty. At the end of December 1871, Alfred Nobel obtained a six-year patent for the exploitation of dynamite from the Italian government, to be financed by both French and German investors. [NUREMBERG TRIALS]: RIBBENTROP JOACHIM VON (1893-1946) German politician who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nazi Germany 1938-45. A remarkable D.S., J v Ribbentrop, in bold pencil, one page, folio, n.p. (Nuremberg), 25th January 1946, in German. The partially printed (mimeographed) document, completed in typescript, is addressed to the General Secretary of the International Military Tribunal and is a Defendant's Application for Summons for Witness in which Ribbentrop requests that the Duke of Windsor, the former King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom, be summoned to give evidence on his behalf, as 'When presenting his credentials in 1936, von Ribbentrop expressed to the then King Edward VIII the desire of the Reich Chancellor for the closest cooperation between Germany and England. In the course of this audience, King Edward VIII declared that he, too, deemed such a cooperation necessary' and further explaining that such facts are relevant 'To disprove counts I and II of the General Indictment and the respective counts of the special indictments filed up to now'. Countersigned in bold pencil at the foot by Dr. Martin Horn, the Defence Counsel representing Ribbentrop. Accompanied by the official IMT English translation of Ribbentrop's document. Some file holes to the upper edge of each document, light overall age wear and minor traces of professional restoration, otherwise VG, 2 King Edward VIII's beliefs regarding Adolf Hitler and the Nazis have long been the subject of speculation. Many historians have suggested that Hitler was prepared to reinstate the Duke of Windsor as King in the hope of establishing a fascist puppet government in Great Britain after Operation Sea Lord. It is widely believed that the Duke and Duchess (whom the FBI were informed had slept with the German Ambassador in London, Joachim von Ribbentrop, in 1936) sympathised with fascism before and during World War II and were moved to the Bahamas to minimise their opportunities to act on their feelings. Joachim von Ribbentrop was arrested in June 1945 and subsequently convicted and sentenced to death at the Nuremberg Trials for his role in starting World War II in Europe and enabling the Holocaust. On 16th October 1946 he became the first of the Nuremberg defendants to be executed by hanging. Provenance: The present document originated from the archives of Dr. Hans Werner who was responsible for directing the printing of the Record of the Trial of Major War Criminals in 42 volumes and in three different languages (English, French & German) immediately following the Nuremberg Trials.

I have therefore sent out letters to the President of the Vegetarian Society and Mrs [Annie] Besant. I propose that the E.C.U. should send me a selection of books to be sold here. I would sell the books at cost price plus the postage and 5% commission to be kept by me. As to the price however I should be left free to use my discretion. I would send up the sale proceeds of the books every three months. The advertisement charges will be borne by me. If at the end of one year nothing is sold I would return the books at my cost. I give my personal guarantee for the safe keeping of the books and the sale proceeds…..If it is necessary to read this letter or a portion thereof to the Union you can do so. I hope you will be able to persuade the Union, or those in authority, to accede to the above proposal'. Gandhi further writes concerning a controversial work, 'If you do not think much of the 'Souls', what position is the book to occupy in respectful literature? If the author has written what is absolutely true from personal observation, the book cannot be lightly treated. If it is an attempt to delude the people into a belief in real truths by fascinating falsehoods the book deserves the highest condemnation possible. For we will not learn truth by means of falsehoods. Of course I write this without meaning the slightest disrespect for the author of whom I know nothing. She may be a lady of the highest probity and truth. I only repeat that to appreciate the Souls acquaintance with the author's character is absolutely necessary' and also dejectedly mentions a petition that Lewis had sent him, 'I could get many signatures…..But I am afraid the Natal signatures would be quite useless. Is it not a sad commentary on the morality of the age that a most important and yet most harmless and elevating monument should not receive good support? At times when I think of these things I thoroughly despair of fruits of works. A verse from the Bhagavad Gita saves me from utter despair and consequent inaction - a verse which enjoins freedom from attachment to fruits of works'. In a postscript, signed by Gandhi with his initials ('MKG') he asks for his change of address to be noted. A letter of wonderful content reflecting the formative years of Gandhi's philosophical and spiritual interests. With a few pencil annotations in the hand of the recipient and with some extremely light, minor age wear, VGThe Perfect Way; or, the finding of Christ was written by the English humanitarian writer Edward Maitland in 1882 in collaboration with the Anna Kingsford, the English vegetarian and women's rights campaigner. Revised editions of the work were published in 1887 and 1890. Maitland was a member of the Theosophical Society and in November 1891 founded the Esoteric Christian Union. Gandhi became the Union's South Africa agent in 1894, as suggested in the present letter. Theosophy, the religion established in the United States in the late 19th century, has been described as both a new religious movement and a part of the occultist stream of Western esotericism. It draws upon both older European philosophies such as Neoplatonism and Asian religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism. Gandhi developed much of his interest in Hindu culture after two Theosophists had given him a copy of the Bhagavad Gita, which he refers to in the present letter, and which he also considered his 'spiritual dictionary'.

I was a member of this committee'. Countersigned in pencil at the foot by Dr. Otto Nelte, the Defence Counsel representing Keitel. Accompanied by the official IMT English translation of Keitel's document. PUYI: (1906-1967) Xuantong Emperor of China 1908-12, the eleventh and final Qing dynasty monarch, known as ‘The Last Emperor’ and the subject of Bernardo Bertolucci’s epic biographical drama film The Last Emperor (1987). An excellent 4to album featuring a page bearing the extremely rare, bold black fountain pen ink signature of Xuantong Emperor (‘Henry’, being the name he wished to be known by in English, and also with his signature in Chinese characters alongside), immediately beneath which appear the black fountain pen ink signatures of Reginald F. Johnston (1874-1938) British diplomat who served as tutor and adviser to Puyi, and the Emperor’s younger brother Imperial Prince Pujie (1907-1994) who also signs with both his western name (‘William’) and in Chinese characters above. Pujie has also added the date 17th July 1924 in his hand. Annotated beneath in the hand of Johnston, identifying the signatures, ‘The above are H. M. the Manchu Emperor, Tutor to His Majesty, Younger brother of H.M. the Empress, Younger brother of H. M. the Emperor’. A further annotation, in German and in an unidentified hand, appears at the foot of the page and makes reference to Puyi and Pujie, and their English names, and Johnston. The album contains over 110 other signatures, most with additional autograph sentiments, many in German, although also including some entries in Chinese and English, notable signatories including Sven Hedin (1865-1952) Swedish geographer, topographer and explorer who made four expeditions to Central Asia and mapped the Great Wall of China (dated Peking, 8th November 1923 in his hand), Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) Bengali polymath, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1913 (pencil signature, dated 20th May 1924 in his hand), Otto Eix (1869-1934) German surgeon and gynaecologist, and other members of his family, Ku Hung-ming (1857-1928) British Malaya born Chinese man of letters, a friend of Leo Tolstoy, Erwin Rouselle (1890-1949) German sinologist and professor of German philosophy at Peking University, Erwin Liek (1878-1935) German physician and writer, founding editor of the general health magazine Hippokrates, Max Halbe (1865-1944) German dramatist, one of the main exponents of Naturalism (two entries, one also signed by two family members), Hans Driesch (1867-1941) German biologist and philosopher, noted for his early experimental work in embryology and for performing the first artificial ‘cloning’ of an animal in the 1880s, and many others dating between 1923-50. Bound in red leather with gilt edging and marbled endpapers. Lacking parts of the spine and the covers a little loose, generally VG Autographs of Puyi, the last Emperor of China, only very rarely appear at auction and we are aware of just one other example having been offered in the last decade. The present example of the Xuantong Emperor’s signature is enhanced by the presence of the signatures of his brother, the Imperial Prince, and of Johnston, his tutor and close adviser. Furthermore, the signatures are dated at a significant time in Puyi’s life, just a few months prior to the coup led by the warlord Feng Yuxiang who took control of Peking in October 1924 and went on to expel Puyi (now stripped of his privileges and title and reduced to being a private citizen of the Republic of China) from the Forbidden City on 5th November 1924.
