Made from black volcanic rock with pitted surfaces, comprising a round-section lentoid pestle and a lunate mortar mounted on a custom-made stand. 16.4 kg total including stand, stone: 50 cm wide (19 5/8 in.). [2] From Central Sahara, Africa. Ex southern German private collection of U.H., since before 1999. Gorny & Mosch, Munich, Germany, auction 279, no.332. Accompanied by a copy of the Gorny & Mosch invoice and illustrated catalogue listing. Accompanied by a copy of the German cultural export licence. This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by search certificate no.12487-229952.

A bronze mortar and associated pestle, Dutch or Flemish, of flared design, the frieze with a band of foliate lappets, over a wide band of stylised animals between foliate cast loop handles, the rim inscribed 'Heinrick Ter Horst Me Fecit Anno 1607', 19cm wide 18cm deep 14.5cm high (2) Provenance: Christie's, 'Schloss Herblingen', 14-18 September 1998, lot 768. Condition ReportPestle and Mortar: Both items show general wear and tear.Rubbing and Marks: There are some noticeable signs of rubbing and marks on the surface. The base with a squared indent, with the middle protruding slightly, we believe this is due to use. There is even pattina throughout the base with the middle and bottom rim polished from use. There does not appear to be any repairs.Interior Wear: The interior has some small areas of loss and tiny cracks, particularly around the rim.Stability: The mortar wobbles slightly when placed on a flat surface.Please see additional images.

A 19th century mahogany apothecary cabinet, containing 20 bottles of various medicinal compounds and poisons, some sealed, all with paper labels, mainly for ‘C. Woollven, Operative & Dispensing Chemist, 108, High Street, Portsmouth’, plus five drawers containing; a glass pestle and mortar, scales, weights, a pill press, camphor, etc. condition poor to fair, some structural damage to the cabinet, one foot missing and other chips and minor damage, etc. bone handles Honest, unrestored condition; underside of one rear foot missing; front right foot chipped and marginally incomplete; baseboard cracked vertically; one side warping away from the upper dovetails, one door one hinge screw missing. One bottle missing, as shown; pestle and mortar almost certainly original and neither damaged; bottles labelled by two firms, Woollven of Portsmouth and Nicholson of Tunbridge Wells; sliding rear panel reveals four further bottles, as now shown; no key to front lock.
