Ex. collection Major P I C Payne, Whitehall, Old Cleeve, Minehead, Somerset. The work was cleaned, restored and varnished by E. Stacy-Marks Ltd, Eastbourne, 7th October 1977. Swiss painter and illustrator of Russian birth, active in Australia. In 1845 returned to Lausanne, studying under J. G. Guignard. In 1851 moved to London studying lithography under Ludwig Gruner, and in 1853-4 he studied watercolour painting in Rome. He arrived in Australia on 25 December 1854, working as an illustrator for local newspapers. 1858-1864 he accompanied scientific expeditions into the wilderness. The Buffalo Ranges was the first Australian painting purchased for the National Gallery of Victoria. See illustration
