A PAINTED CIZHOU ‘GALLOPING HORSE’ DISH, MINGChina, 1368-1644. The shallow rounded sides rising from a short ring foot to an everted rim, covered overall with a creamy white glaze and boldly painted in dark and light shades of brown with a galloping horse below stylized clouds and above a lingzhi and grass blades, the rim with two circumferential lines.Provenance: Old French private collection. Once settled in the district of Montparnasse, he quickly associated himself with with Picasso, Juan Gris, Max Jacob, and Manolo.In 1912, he met in Céret his first dealer, Adolphe Basler, who bought all of his paintings in exchange for a monthly payment of 300 francs. When he got back in Paris, he moved into a studio at 3 rue Joseph-Bara where Modigliani, Soutine, Derain, and Juan Gris used to meet. Pascin and the Kroghs, father and son, lived in the same building. He attended Baronness Hélene d'Oettingen's famous parties, which were the literary and artistic centre of Montparnasse until 1914.Kisling was caught out by the outbreak of World War I, as he was visiting Belgium with Basler. He returned to France in order to enlist in the French Foreign Legion. He was wounded in 1915 and was discharged from service. On his return to Montparnasse he was surprised to discover that a young American soldier who died during the war had bequeathed 25,000 francs to him. He visited Spain, returned to Paris and met art dealer Zborowski. In 1919, the Druet Gallery organized his first exhibition. His paintings were a success, and his models were the stars of the time: Falconetti, Valentine Tessier, Arletty, Cocteau, Colette, Marie Laurencin, and Kiki de Montparnasse. When World War II broke out, Kisling went to live in his house in Sanary-sur-Mer. In 1940, he left for New York. Antoine Irisse, born Avram Iris, studied at the School of Fine Arts in Kishinev. Irisse migrated to Belgium where he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Brussels. In 1931, he exhibited at the Katia Granoff Gallery, where he started being noticed by art critics and most notably by Waldemar Georg, editor-in-chief of magazine Prisme des Arts.In 1932, he exhibited in a group exhibition with Raoul Dufy, Friesz, Mané-Kats, Picasso, Pougny, Utrillo and Maurice de Vlaminck.During World War II, Irisse was denounced by one of his suppliers in Paris and had to remain hidden to escape the Gestapo. During this time and until his death in 1957, he participated in the Salon de Mai, Salon des Indépendants, Salon des Tuileries and Salon d'Automne. Practising between the genres of abstraction and surrealism, Fasini sought for an original artistic expression that would distinguish his position within the School of Paris. Max Berger, owner of the Galerie Vavin, exhibited Fasini's work for two years alongside Jean Lurçat, Pablo Picasso, and Georges Papazoff. During the Vel d'Hiv roundup in 1942, he was arrested by the French police and his work was destroyed in his studio. In 1911, she founded the Russian Academy of Painting and Sculpture and a year later established the Académie Vassilieff which became a meeting place for the Parisian avant-garde.When World War I broke out she transformed her studio into a canteen, which enjoyed growing popularity among intellectuals including Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Amadeo Modigliani, and Chaim Soutine. The venue put on shows, held conferences, literary and musical evenings, and threw legendary parties. Vassilieff's oeuvre was deeply influenced by the Cubist movement that was shaping in Paris at the time. She was most known for her portraits of dancers and her friends, like Picasso and Matisse, as well as her decorative furniture pieces and doll-portraits. She designed for patron Paul Poiret and directed the costume-making workshops for the theatrical season of Rolf de Maré 's Ballets Suédois at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. In 1925, she created 'Puppet Furniture' for the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts and two years later decorated two pillars of the renown La Coupole brewery. In 1937, she participated at the International Exhibition of Arts and Techniques in Modern Life. He was a poet, novelist, playwright, art critic and painter.In 1897, he settled in Paris and started authoring art columns for the journals Moniteur des Arts and La Gazette des Beaux-Arts, under the pseudonym 'Léon David'. In 1901 he met Picasso and settled with him on boulevard Voltaire. He associated with painters and poets at the Beateau-Lavoir. The first book that he published was Histoire du Roi Kaboul Ier et du marmiton Gauwain which was followed by several others including Le Cornet à dés, Le Phanérogame, and Les Alliés sont en ArménieIn 1914, he converted to Christianity. In his career as a painter he produced few oil paintings but mostly gouaches depicting views of Brittany and circus scenes. In 1933, he was named a Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honour.Pavlova is a portrayal of the classical ballet dancer Anna Pavlova. She was a star of the Imperial Russian Ballet and of Serge Diaghilev's Russian Ballets.
