Das Wirken des Künstlers geht weit über die Begründung des Kubismus, für die er der Welt nachhaltig im Gedächtnis blieb, hinaus. Braque, den zeitlebens eine enge Freundschaft mit Picasso verbindet, arbeitet in seinen letzten Schaffensjahren an dem monumentalen Zyklus "Métamorphoses", der annähernd 100 Gouachen umfasst. Diese Arbeiten auf Papier sollten die Grundlage für eine neue Werkgruppe von Bronzen bilden, weshalb er jeder Gouache eine handschriftliche Autorisierung zur dreidimensionalen Reproduktion beilegte. Mit der Reproduktion betraut wurde der renommierte Juwelier Heger de Loewenfeld, der noch zu Lebzeiten Braques zu dessen gesetztem Produzenten aufstieg. In Nachfolge Loewenfelds produzierte ab dem Jahr 1994 Armand Israël die Editionen, die er nicht nur als Bronzen, sondern auch als Keramiken, Mosaiken und Tapisserien umsetzte. Auch der vorliegenden Arbeit mit dem Titel "Aréion" liegt eine der Gouachen aus diesem Zyklus zugrunde. In dem Werk kommt besonders Braques Faszinatzion für die griechische Mythologie zur Geltung. Der Titel bezieht sich auf ein sagenhaft schnelles Pferd mit schwarzer Mähne, welches von Poseidon und der Fruchtbarkeitsgöttin Demeter abstammt. Demeter - eigentlich auf der Suche nach Ihrer Tochter Persephone - verwandelt sich auf der Flucht vor Poseidon in eine Stute und sucht sich unter den königlichen Pferden zu verstecken. Daraufhin verwandelt sich Poseidon in einen Hengst, spürt Demeter auf und paart sich mit ihr. Aréion - als Pferd der menschlichen Sprache mächtig - wird später an Herkules übergeben und verhilft ihm zum Sieg in einem Rennen gegen Ares Sohn Cycnus. The present lot comes from a private US collection and was acquired at the 1968 Venice Biennale by the present owner's grandmother. Le Piume del Pavone was executed in welded bronze in 1967 and was exhibited at the artist's first showcase at the Venice Biennale in the Egyptian Pavilion in 1968, where the Nagdi had no less than sixteen sculptures showcased including another stylized rendition of a Cat. Showcasing Nadgi's mastery of shapes and material, the present work is visually captivating and aesthetically fascinating. Following his success at the Venice Biennale in 1968, Nagdi was granted an award later that same year at the Alexandria Biennale in Egypt for his sculptures. Mostly recognised for his paintings, Omar El Nagdi's sculptures are rare and as such, the present lot is one of his earlier sculptural masterpieces is undeniably a masterpiece.The artist was born in Cairo in 1931 and studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Helwan University. Nagdi continued his training in Russia and Italy, eventually graduating from the Academy of Venice in 1967. A prodigious pioneer in Egyptian art history, In the 1960s Nagdi exhibited in Europe alongside the Western masters Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dal. His works were soon acquired by leading institutions around the world.An active member of Cairo's art community and of the Liberal Artists' group headed by Taha Hussein, Nagdi was an extraordinary painter and who equally excels as a film director and music composer. This is similar to his more familiar use of red monochrome during the time, but is possibly inspired by Picasso's blue period from 1900-1904, and a precursor to his later 1960s 'black on black' works. Renowned for being a champion of draughtsmanship and critical of abstract works, in Untiled (Landscape in Blue) he appears to have married the two. Original, hand painted illustration, entitled ‘The Prisoner’ by Jean Derval, who studied as a graphic designer and poster artist at the Ècole des Arts Appliqués on Rue Dupetit-Thouars in Paris. Derval subsequently used his artistic background to develop his skills as a potter, working alongside Roger Capron in Robert Picault in Vallauris the 1940s, and subsequently joining Picasso at his Madoura workshop for two years from 1949. This piece is hand signed with Derval’s distinctive monogram and has been professionally framed with a double mount board. Measures 49.5cm by 43cm.
