Known for his natural and colourful figurative style, his watercolours encapsulate his talent and wit. An intrepid traveller, his works were often inspired by the colours and sounds remembered from his trips to Greece, India and Morocco.His work has been regularly exhibited at the Redfern Gallery, alongside a touring museum show in 1985 that began at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. He was more recently the subject of an acclaimed retrospective at Huddersfield Art Gallery in 2012. Broadside.- Chartists.- Birmingham Bull Ring Riots.- Dreadful Attempt to Fire Birmingham, printed broadside, crudely printed occasionally obscuring text, creases, faint spotting and soiling, laid onto paper, c.375 x 160 mm., Nottingham, J. Plant, [1839] § Dreadful Riots at Newcastle. From the Sun of this Day, printed broadside, creases, light staining, one or two tiny marginal holes, laid onto paper, ex-Nottingham library with neat ink-stamp to verso, c.370 x 250 mm., Nottingham, [c.1843]; (2). *** the first rare. Seemingly unrecorded. The Bull Ring riots started on 4th July 1839, after the Mayor had read the riot act before a meeting of the Chartists. When the meeting failed to disperse, the Mayor called in 60 officers to break up the meeting. There followed widespread rioting, vandalism and destruction of property. The riots continued in later July after the Chartists petition was rejected by parliament.
A group of four pictures To include a full portrait of young girl in a countryside scene, signed and dated by JM Clory, Selkirk, dated 2 Sept 1903, oil on canvas, 54cm x 45cm; a framed reproduction print of an exhibition poster 'Henry Moore Sculpture + Drawings FIRENZE - Forte Belvedere May to September 1972' 68cm x 39cm; a framed lithograph of workers after Frank Brangwyn, 31.5cm x 39cm; and a framed print of a plant in a terracotta pot, 21.5cm x 29cm (4)The naive school painting has multiple canvas punctures varying in sizes, the largest being approximately 3.5cm. However, the colour pigment has retained fairly well. There is general marking throughout the paint layer. The Henry Moore poster has discoloured in areas and has general marking throughout. The frame for the poster is loose and will need to be replaced or resealed at least. There are no visible signs of rips or tears to the poster. The Brangwyn lithograph has significant discolouration and foxing. The sheet is loose within the mount and and has caused a visible acid line. General marking throughout the sheet. The watercolour has discoloured significantly with the colour pigment faded heavily. There is also heavy markinng found throughout the sheet and small areas of spotting.
