A PAIR OF GEORGE III GILTWOOD OVAL MIRRORSATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM & JOHN LINNELL, CIRCA 1760The ribbon tied entwined palm frond frames incorporating 'C' scrolls and acanthus each 130cm high, 94cm wideThis pair of mirrors or 'pier glasses', of Roman medallion form, is conceived in the George II picturesque style and relates to a flower entwined example at Uppark, West Sussex. John Linnell designed a pier glass circa 1760 and such mirrors appear to be derived from that drawing (Illustrated in H. Hayward & P. Kirkham, William & John Linnell, vol. II, London, 1980, p.115. fig.220). A closely related white painted pier mirror was supplied to Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter for Burghley House, Lincolnshire; although no specific bill remains, Exeter is known to have employed Linnell during the 1760's. A related mirror was designed and supplied by the architect John Vardy (1718-1765) to the 1st Earl Spencer for the Palm Room, the Earl's mansion, St. James's London. It is very rare to find a pair of mirrors of this design, most commonly only single examples are found. The current examples are also of larger size and a more sophisticated model than many other recorded examples, incorporating additional ornament to the main palm fronds forming the frames. A related but single and smaller example was sold; Christie's, London, A Private Collection from Belgravia' 26th January 2011 (£15,000). Another related single example, also attributed to William and John Linnell was sold; Christie's, London, Property of the Late Lady de Trafford, 9th December 2010, Lot 58 (£34, 850). Condition Report: Both with marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Some old chips and splits to frames. Both mirror plates have age and could possibly be original. They bear the expected depletion, sparkle and spots of loss. The surfaces of both frames appear to have been sympathetically cleaned and refreshed at some point. The gilt surface to both mirrors with the expected wear and rubbing. Various old glued repairs to the carved extremities of both mirrors - please see additional images. Some old vacant screw holes to the backs from previous fixtures. The backboards have age but are later replacements. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition. Y A FRENCH KINGWOOD BREAKFRONT VITRINELATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURYWith breche violette marble top and gilt metal mounts115cm high, 118cm wide, 43cm deepCondition Report: There are some marks, scratches, knocks, chips, cracks and abrasions consistent with age and use. Repairs to include;repaired breaks to marble top (which has further loss to back corners)Repaired mouldings around marble (old glue evident)Repairs to wooden internal moulding around inside of glass door.Front right leg is darker- possibly a rosewood and looks to be replacement- also true for back right leg but slightly less evident. In both cases mounts look to be original. The front leg looks also to have suffered some damage to wood around leg joint. Rear left leg requires remedial work- looks to have had old repair which has failed. Overall the vitrine is slightly wobbly and will benefit from feet attention throughout.Mounts are fixed with what appear to be matching polished steel screws. Whilst this is not unknow, they do seem slightly larger than would be expected indicating that either it was a slightly clumsier fixing attachment from manufacture- or they have had a bulk replacement. The central goat detailed mount is a rich golden colour- but others to the sides are rubbed and with dirt and verdigris build up. This might suggest the central one has been regilded.Strip moulding mounts are uniformly rubbed with loss to gildingThere is one key- it is a single turn and operates vertical sliding bolt to top and bottom catches. The key action is slightly stiff. Brass section holding bolt has moved slightly- with some marking resulting at contact with main carcase. The door is opening cleanly but looks to have dragged slightly in the past and caused some mild abrasion to the foot area where it slides into. Door and all wide panels are bevelled glass.Back of vitrine is panelledThere is some sign of carcase movement to the veneer around the hingesThere are 2 glass shelves to interior- greener in colour than rest of glass suggesting they may be later. These are on fixed metal pins. The internal base with two later thin mirror plates to the floor. These cover what appears to be original cloth covering. Getting these mirrors out safely will be tricky so we are unable to determine the condition of the cloth. Reverse of interior is lined with mirror- which seems to be generally good albeit some mild shadows to lower left hand. The left hand upper section of the top looks to have shrunk slightly with a small gap visible from the frontLower edge of left side with losses, bruising. Front edge of this side also with a knock to the wood. Please see the additional photographs as a visual reference of condition and which form part of this condition report.
