CHARLES DICKENS POCKET WATCH, gifted from Bentleys Miscellany: a William IV gilt metal open faced key wind pocket watch, the fusee movement signed 'William Tyas London, No. 12067, 45mm diameter engine turned dial, the case engraved to reverse 'Dearest Boz editor Bentleys Miscellany Dec.1836', the initials CD to left and right of centre. A highly emotive and particularly early piece of Dickens memorabilia, given to him at the close of the first year of the periodical's existence under his editorship. Concluding the serialisation of The Pickwick Papers the following year, Dickens went on to resign from his position as editor after falling out with Bentley in 1839.Lots 61-63 are from a deceased estate originating in the Portsmouth area. It seems likely that they originally belonged to Dickens' youngest daughter.Condition report: The watch winds and ticks, very minor rust to some parts, movement is clean, general wear to gilding, some wear to case commensurate with age. We do not have a certificate of authenticity with this lot.
