GERDA LEPKE (1939 Jena, lebt in Freital) "Wiesenlandschaft"Öl auf Leinwand. 1992.85,5 x 156 cm. (Katalog Gerda Lepke - Horizonte, 2020, S. 9).
John Bratby: 'Breakdown', New York & Cleveland, World Publishing Co., 1960, 1st US edition, signed & inscribed by Bratby on FFEP, further inscribed by him facing contents page, with full page pencil portrait on rear end paper by him with pencil note by him beneath, plus 4 Autograph Letters Signed by him, original quarter cloth gilt, pictorial paper covered boards. Details of inscriptions, portrait sketch and ALS by him as follows: i) pencil inscription to upper free endpaper: "To Delightful, Dear, Beautiful, Paint-covered, chromatic, earthy, a cynosure, wild, nobody else could be so unwashed & also be very beautiful, the daughter of Emil Nolde, Christine, from John Bratby [,] June 25 1973." ii) pencil note to blank page facing 'Contents' : "just nobody with hands loaded with gloss paint, & looking as if Jackson Pollock had used her for a painting. Cynosure=centre of attraction" iii) on lower free endpaper, full-page head and shoulders pencil portrait of Christine with note: "Christine[.] so sorry not doing my best yet - which hopefully to come will please us each more and anyway - delighted to meet you and for letting me be close" iv) Four Autograph Letters Signed in ball-point from Bratby to Christine, dated July/August 1973, on Bratby's striking own-designed illustrated note paper (two comprising a single sheet, two comprising two sheets). Looks forward to seeing her again and asks after her health, a waitressing job she has taken, her social life, whether she would pose for him - £1 an hour. v) single unused sheet of Bratby's note paper. John Bratby (1928-1992), painter and novelist, one of the 'angry young men' of the fifties, founder of the 'kitchen sink' realist movement in art. By the early 1970's his style of painting had fallen largely out of fashion in the face of American-influenced pop art. His failure to sell most of his work at the 1973 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition was greeted with considerable 'schadenfreude' by those critics who had never liked his work. His 'portrait' of Queen Elizabeth, in particular, aroused much controversy. (A contemporary Evening Standard review of Bratby's submissions to that exhibition is included in the lot.) No biographical information to be found about 'Christine'. Unlikely, though not impossible, that she was in fact the daughter of Emil Nolde (German Expressionist painter, 1867 to 1956). More likely that the reference just represents a moment of fanciful free association on Bratby's part, not least given that there are superficial stylistic similarities between the two painters.
George Morrison (Ojibwe, 1919-2000). Tempera on paper painting titled "Nostalgia (After deChirco). Red Rock Variation. Lake Superior" depicting an abstract composition in red and blue, 1960. Signed, inscribed "Dayton Ohio," and dated along the lower right. With a label from Bockley Gallery affixed to the verso.Provenance: Private Minnesota Collection.Lot Essay:Regarded as the founding figure of Native American modernism and among the top American abstract expressionist painters is George Morrison. Also highly regarded as a master collage artist, he assembled large collages of found driftwood and woodcut in framed, puzzle-like forms. In the 1940s, he was formally trained at the Minneapolis College of Art and in the 1950s at the Art Students League in New York before receiving a Fulbright to study in France. Taking his place as part of the modern art movement in New York in the 1950s after World War II, he was friends with Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, regularly exhibiting with de Kooning, Philip Guston, Hans Hofmann, and Franz Kline. Morrison helped bring the New York Modern Art Movement to Minnesota, where he was based and worked with pure form via Abstract Expressionism. Later in his career, in the mid-1970s, Morrison shifted to a new theme and started to really explore his heritage when he and his family built a home with an art studio on the Grand Portage Indian Reservation on Lake Superior, naming it Red Rock.Rather than portraying an overt depiction of identity, Morrison was in the process of exploring his identity so he looked to nature, stating “in this search for my own identity, I seek the power of the rock, the magic of the water, the religion of the tree, the color of the wind and the enigma of the horizon.†Translating nature into paintings was Morrison’s way to navigate learning and absorption, and in turn produce self-expression. His token theme was the horizon, taking on dynamic form as colors or shapes in the eternal motion of nature. His inspiration was provided by Lake Superior, observing and documenting the temporary sight of the revered sky meeting landscape that he beheld in the moment. His artworks are spotted today in the collections of the Heard Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Whitney Museum of American Art, US National Gallery of Art, Minneapolis Institute of Art, and the Walker Art Center. In 1997 he was honored in a ceremony at the White House when his work was included in the Twentieth Century American Sculpture at The White House: Honoring Native Americans exhibition. In 1999 Morrison was honored as inaugural Master Artist in the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, Indianapolis.Sight; height: 17 1/4 in x width: 22 3/4 in. Framed; height: 26 in x width: 31 1/2 in x depth: 1 in.Condition:The colors are bold and deep. There are no major tears, losses, or restorations. There are several small creases and minute tears along the extreme edges and corners. There is some light craquelure to the thicker areas of paint. Floated in frame. Light wear to the frame.

Claude Berri rencontre Leo Castelli, Paris, 1990, pp. 28, 35 et 69.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Helen Frankenthaler (1928–2011) was an American abstract expressionist painter known for her innovative techniques and groundbreaking contributions to the field of color field painting. Born in New York City, Frankenthaler studied at Bennington College in Vermont and later at the Art Students League of New York.Frankenthaler's work was deeply influenced by the abstract expressionist movement, particularly the techniques of Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. However, she developed her own distinctive style characterized by the use of poured and stained paints to create large-scale, abstract compositions. One of Frankenthaler's most famous works is "Mountains and Sea" (1952), a painting that exemplifies her groundbreaking technique of staining unprimed canvas with thinned-down oil paints. This innovative approach allowed the colors to soak into the fabric, creating luminous, ethereal effects and blurring the boundaries between figure and ground.Throughout her career, Frankenthaler continued to experiment with different materials and techniques, producing a diverse body of work that ranged from monumental canvases to intimate works on paper. She was particularly interested in the relationship between color and emotion, and her paintings often evoke a sense of joy, serenity, and transcendence.Frankenthaler's work had a profound impact on the development of abstract painting in the 20th century, and she is widely regarded as one of the most important artists of her generation. Her bold use of color and innovative techniques continue to inspire artists and art lovers around the world, and her legacy as a pioneering figure in abstract expressionism endures to this day.Measures 34.1 x 58.0.
