Y Sir William Newton (British, 1785-1869), Portrait of the late Eaneas (sic) Barkly Esqr. Watercolour on ivory Inscribed by the artist and dated 1837 verso 17.2cm x 13cm, arch top In a gilt metal rococo frame Aeneas Barkly (1768 -1836) was a very successful London West India merchant, ship owner, and plantation owner. He was a partner in Davidson, Barkly & Co., one of the largest West India trading businesses in London prior to the ending of slavery, awarded large compensation for the loss of slaves across the Caribbean. He married Susannah Louisa Ffrith, daughter of a Jamaica coffee planter, in 1805. He died suddenly on 17th August 1836.
