Registration No: JRE 747 Chassis No: 29S8705 MOT: ExemptRare 12HP Riley, with only some 575 units produced'Intact' and 'very original' exampleIdeal candidate for 'oily rag' motoring or for full restoration, with the engine freeIn storage for several decades being unearthed in 2020After the Nuffield group took over Riley in 1938, the model range was streamlined to just the 12/4 and 16/4 engines. Each chassis offered two body styles: a 6-light 4-door Saloon with a swept tail, and a 2-door drophead Coupe. The Saloon, which had begun development before the takeover, was a clear evolution of the Adelphi body style, with some 550-575 units produced. The design featured the fashionable in-period helmet-style wings instead of the traditional Riley flowing designs. The rear doors were rear-hinged, unlike the centrally hinged doors of the Adelphi. Additionally, the rear of the car possessed a squarer design, with a larger rear quarter light and a bigger boot. This is a rare car, beginning production at the outbreak of war meant that production then stopped for the duration, with Riley introducing the RM post-war.In an 'intact' state, this rare Riley 12HP isn’t a stalled restoration or box of bits. Known to the Riley Motor Club, in the words of the vendor, ‘nothing has been done to this car and everything is still very original’. Its history is uncertain, where it began life or how many miles it's covered. We are told the Riley went into storage in the late 1960s and remained there until 2020. It was recovered by the previous owner and awaited restoration, but other projects got in the way. The engine hasn't been started in the current ownership, however, we believe the engine turns. Inside, the leather seats offer the potential for cleaning up nicely. The vendor adds, ‘all the doors, boot and bonnet open and the car rolls freely. The floors, the boot floor and the chassis all look to be sound.’ It could make a great restoration project and is offered with the V5C and a single key. Registration No: VAS 771 Chassis No: C457425 MOT: ExemptBenefitting from a previous restoration that was understood to have been completed in 2002Finished in Black paintwork with Red interior upholsteryNicely presented, charming post-war classic!Introduced in December 1948, the new E493A Ford Prefect owed much to its pre-WW2 E93A predecessor. Based around a similar transverse leaf-sprung ladder-frame chassis, it was powered by the same 1172cc four-cylinder side-valve engine mated to a three-speed manual transmission. Sporting a handsomely restyled four-door saloon body complete with front-wing integrated headlamps and a fresh radiator grille design, it utilised 6-volt electrics plus vacuum-operated windscreen wipers. Laid out in the traditional manner, its interior boasted a well-stocked bakelite dashboard and two-tone upholstery. Immensely popular some 192,000 were made over the course of its five-year production run (though, today survivors are comparatively scarce).Manufactured in 1949, the E493A Prefect offered is finished in Black paintwork with a Red interior upholstery with White piping, and with Brown bakelite dashboard. Understood to have been provided with a full previous restoration that is thought to have been completed in 2002 and has reputedly covered less than 5,000 miles since the restoration’s completion. Offered now with 36,650 recorded miles on the odometer, the Prefect is accompanied by sundry paperwork and a current V5C document. A nicely presented and charming post-war classic! Registration No: ND 8602 Chassis No: 5917ED MOT: ExemptJust two owners during the Sunbeam's first fifty-six yearsFull cosmetic restoration since being purchased by the vendor in 2013 including complete repaint and retrimmedBenefitting from an extensive mechanical restoration previously, including a full engine overhaulApproximately 800 miles completed since the cosmetic restoration including two long-distance tripsOffered with an extensive history file containing the original buff logbookSunbeam's initial post-WWI offerings were based on its pre-war designs and the first truly new model was the four-cylinder 14 introduced in 1922. A major step forward, it evolved into the 14/40 of 1924. This was powered by the same four-cylinder OHV 2121cc engine, featuring magneto ignition and Claudel Hobson MZP carburation. This unit was mated to a three-speed gearbox with right-hand change, suspension was by semi-elliptic leaves at the front and cantilever units at the rear and four-wheel brakes were standard fare. The newcomer was offered with a variety of different bodies - two and five-seat Tourers, Coupe, Sports model, Saloon, and Saloon by Weymann. A total of some 2,850 14/40s were manufactured during the model's two-year reign.Chassis number ‘5917ED’ was supplied new to its first owner in December 1924 and was clothed in Tourer coachwork from new. The first owner, Ethelbert Stott, was a member of the Abraham Stott & Son cotton spinning company in the Manchester area. Residing in Leighton Buzzard for many years, he retained the Sunbeam for some thirty-six years, before the second keeper, a Mr Holden, had similarly long-term ownership of 20 years. Thereafter, the 14/40 was sold to a Health & Reach Motor Garage for use as a showroom display piece in 1980 and latterly purchased back into private family ownership in 1987. The Sunbeam was passed through several owners within the family before it was sold to the previous keeper as a recommissioning project in 2011.Between 1987 and 1990, the Sunbeam benefitted from an almost complete mechanical overhaul to the expense of c.£18,000 with minimal mileage since completion. Works included overhauls of the engine, front axle, radiator, dynamo and magneto; re-wiring; and new brakes, springs, fuel tank, stainless steel exhaust, as well as renewal of the weather equipment. Recommissioned by the previous keeper, the Sunbeam was back on the road in 2013 before being acquired by the vendor later that same year. In the custodianship of the vendor, ‘ND 8602’ has been lavished with a full cosmetic restoration and mechanical improvement to the sum of c.£8,800.Upon the beginning of the pandemic, the 14/40 was lifted on axle stands, where it has remained ever since. Requiring some recommissioning, it is offered with extensive history folders, the buff logbook, extensive invoices back to the 1980s, the original instruction book, previous logbooks, MOT history, photographs of the Sunbeam, technical information, weather equipment, a wall sign, technical information and a current V5C document. Fully mechanically and cosmetically restored with c.800 miles since, ‘5917ED’ is a very worthwhile re-commissioning project. Registration No: W829 EEO Chassis No: SALLDVA87YA182344 MOT: December 2025Recently fitted with a new galvanised chassis from KD Land RoverCurrent family ownership since 2016Benefitting from some £12,800 worth of improvements (not including the chassis) in current ownershipJust c.79,000 recorded milesThe Land Rover was launched in 1948 and, incredibly, production of the traditional Defender only finished in January 2016 after a continuous run of 67 years. Outwardly, there is little to distinguish the post-1983 vehicles from the Series III Land Rover. Internally, coil springs offered a more comfortable ride and a permanent four-wheel-drive system derived from the Range Rover featuring a two-speed transfer gearbox with a lockable centre differential. A modernised interior and a new series of progressively more powerful and modern engine characterised things under the skin. The Defender was fitted with an all-new 2.5-litre, five-cylinder in-line turbo/diesel engine and is mated to a five-speed manual transmission.Manufactured in 2000, the Defender 90 TD5 offered was supplied new to South Africa, remaining there until 2011 when it was repatriated to the United Kingdom with some 41,000 miles recorded on the odometer. Passing through three keepers before being purchased into the current family ownership in 2016, the Land Rover is offered for sale now with some 79,000 miles on the odometer. Benefitting from the fitment of a new galvanised chassis recently, the 90 has received some £12,800 worth of further improvements (not including the chassis which cost c.£3,000) while in the current ownership, with the vast majority of the expenditure with two Land Rover specialists, LRC 4x4 of Congleton and Machins of Leek. These improvements have included extensive mechanical works with a new clutch, new brakes, a new alternator, attention to the electrics and bodywork repairs. Just prior to entering into the current family ownership, the Land Rover further received a new turbo (in 2016). Supplied with a history file that includes numerous previous invoices that document the improvements and service history, a collection of MOT certificates, and a current V5C document. Lavished with significant mechanical attention while with the vendor, the Land Rover can now be pressed into use as is or could be cosmetically improved. Registration No: GK 4244 Chassis No: 8074 MOT: ExemptA very exciting stalled restoration projectCurrent (sadly deceased) ownership since 1967Said to still retain many original Brooklands partsMuch hard work already donePotentially eligible for numerous VSCC events once completedIn 1926, Percy Riley introduced the 1087cc 9hp four-cylinder engine. It was an ingenious design, with twin gear-driven camshafts and hemispherical, cross-flow combustion chambers. The engine looked for all intents like an overhead-cam unit, however, the cams were mounted high in the block, operating pushrods and rockers for the 90-degree incline valves. The engine became a hallmark of Riley cars. The Riley 9 chassis was offered in many styles and equipment, including a very striking closed sports Sedan, fabric-bodied Tourers, and the sporting and sleek Brooklands Roadster. Period literature described the Brooklands as "equally suited for competition work and daily use, very much appreciated by the motorist who desired more than average speed, hill climbing ability, acceleration, and roadworthiness." The Riley 9 proved itself a very capable competitor, with a history of many race wins, records and top results.According to the copy continuation logbook on file, chassis 8704 was first registered as ‘GK 4244’ on November 1st 1930. Referenced on pages 397 and 398 of the authoritative tome, ‘The Riley Nine Brooklands Speed Model’ by Adrian Smith and Keith Mountain, as confirmed directly by Adrian Smith, I am quite prepared to say that after discussion with others who viewed the cars for sale in their dismantled state in 1967, it is a genuine Brooklands chassis. Without a chassis stamping I cannot categorically link metal to paperwork, but on the balance of probabilities, and knowing Paul, the paperwork and chassis would go together, the two-seater’s initial owner is understood to have been A.P. Warren Esq of Acton, London. It is unknown whether he competed in the car but a Mr Arthur P. Warren (who may or may not have been the same person) contested the Monte Carlo Rally aboard various Rileys during the 1950s. Similarly, the car’s second custodian is listed as George Povey Esq of Birmingham and a gentleman of the same name is known to have campaigned a MG Midget at Shelsey Walsh. Subsequent keepers are said to have included: C.M. Smith Esq of Stourport-on-Severn, E.B. Woodall Esq of Harvington, Alan Heap Esq of Exhall, C.F. Hooper Esq of Bristol, Flight Sergeant Jacques Marlier de Routon of Wendens Ambo, A. Rusling Esq of Kettering, W. Barker Esq of Earls Barton, Eric Adams of Northampton, Charles Kennion Esq of Hertford and Brian Kennion Esq of Hitchin with the latter selling the Riley as a dismantled project to the deceased vendor in December 1967. Well known in marque circles, the late seller did not start work in earnest on ‘GK 4244’ until 2019. Sadly, he never got to see the project through to completion but we are informed that the car retains its original petrol tank, front / rear axles, wings and wheels. The chassis is said to be original as well. We did not manage to locate a number on it but have sought permission to attack the paintwork on the dumb irons and hope to do so at the venue. The 9hp engine has reportedly been overhauled with the gearbox and suspension being refurbished too. Not run for a few years, the Riley will require checking over but comes with clocks for the dash, aero screens, sundry items, number plates and a complete set of lights. The seats have been trimmed in Light Brown to complement the envisaged final Green paintwork. All of the wheels have been blasted and painted and fitted with all new tyres. A very worthy project on which most of the hard work has been done, once completed the two-seater should be eligible for numerous VSCC events. Offered for sale with V5C Registration Document, handwritten ownership log, invoices and sundry other paperwork. The remains of a genuine Brooklands bulkhead and doors are also available, should the new owner wish to arrange and collect at their expense post-sale. PLEASE NOTE: The chassis plate for this lot has now been found and will accompany it to the auction. A photo of the plate will be added to the listing. ANTOINE BOFILL, CHROMED CAR MASCOT, 1920-40 signed, possibly Rover, modelled as a Viking wearing a winged helmet15cm highThis lot is in good overall condition, with some wear and age. The base post present and well secured, and the lot shows no large dents or signs of damage. The mascot, as a external feature for a car, would benifit from a detailed clean and polish, especially in the areas of detail. Additonal pictures now available.Hard to discern what metal has been chromed - looks to be some form of alloy. Image of Anderson's available.
WW2 10th Gurkha Rifles Officers Battle Dress Blouse, fine example of a war aid battle dress blouse with concealed button front and pockets. Shoulders with rifles pattern rank pips and cut stitched on far east type slip-on shoulder titles ’10.G.R’. Blackened rifles buttons to the shoulders. WW2 British Anti-Aircraft Mk III Range Finder in Original Transit Box, fine set with the original brass turntable. Body nicely marked. Green paint finish remains bright. Housed in the transit case with the stencils to the interior lid and outer body. Small section of wood missing from the rear of the box but otherwise good. Accompanied by the wooden tripod stand. WW2 US Army M1 Helmet, Fixed Bale Front Seam, Complete M1 helmet with chin strap and liner. The shell has been over painted, potentially by its original owner or post war, due to its finish showing signs of wear. The rim is front seamed and features the fixed bales for the chin straps which still hang from them. The liner made by ‘Westinghouse’ due to its makers mark on the inside crown in 1946 dated to the rear cloth strap. The finish is quite unusual, being a bright pastel green, although this looks to be the original paintwork. A large square net completes this helmet, giving a good representation of a 79th Division G.I in the Normandy campaign.
2nd Volunteer Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers Cross Belt Plate, white metal example with crowned thistle, rose and oakleaf wreath, three part regimental scroll and Prince of Wales plumes to the centre. Complete with backing plate and four screw post fittings. Wreath slightly detached top right corner near crown, otherwise a very good example.
American B-17 Pilots Uniform and Paperwork Archive of Captain Gerald T Smith DFC, 332nd Bomber Squadron of 94th Bomb Group US 8th Air Force, the comprehensive grouping relating to Cpt Gerald T Smith, Pilot, 332nd BS/94th BG. This excellent grouping consists of his full uniform, officers class A’s with shirt, tie and officers garrison cap as well as his A2 flying jacket. The medals, of which are still cased and a very large quantity of paperwork and photos. The officers class A tunic is good clean condition featuring its full insignia with sterling pilot wings, clutch back ‘US’ tabs and ‘Props’, Captain rank badges to the epaulettes, English made 8th air force badge to the right shoulder and the USAAF patch to the left. Common in these cases to have the previous serving air force patch applied to the opposite shoulder, probably in this case, due to returning home and serving in a training unit. Medal ribbons of the DFC, Air Medal and EAME sit nicely below the wings. The trousers or ‘Pinks’ are in good condition with the brass officers type buckled belt. The shirt with collar rank still present and US made 8th Air Force patch applied and period issue tie. His garrison cap with Captain rank badge in situ is in good condition with the black and gold USAAF piping. The A2 is a private purchase example, with good strong leather and working ‘talon’ zip in which a whistle hangs from. Captain Smith’s DFC and Air medals that accompany this lot are in their black presentation cases, both of which have the ribbon bar and button-hole badge in each. In the blue card boxes, are the American campaign medal, the victory medal and the EAME medal plus a spare set of 3in sterling pilot wings. The paperwork side of this grouping is what makes this lot special, detailing most of Gerald Smiths time with the air force from joining up to post war service. His wartime experiences with the 332nd Bomb Squadron of the 94th Bomb Group, based at Rougham, are fascinating, having Photos of two signed members of Geralds crew, ‘Upton’ his navigator and ‘McCormick’ his bombardier. Other pieces include general order extracts, informing Gerald of his DFC awarded on the 8th December 1943 for extraordinary achievement on the 18th oct 1943 on bringing back his stricken B17 ‘Little Sir Echo’ and crash landing it into a field, in Lydden, Near Dover, Kent, without harm to the crew. This is the second time Gerald made a forced landing, before a landing in the channel in July 1943. He would go on to complete a tour of 25 operational missions over enemy territory and receive an oak leaf to his DFC, of which is still attached to the extract letter, dated 16th Dec 1943. Overall, a fantastic collection of pieces relating to a B-17 pilot in the 8th Air Force. Viewing highly recommended due to the large collection of paperwork in which can’t be described in full here.
WW2 US Airborne A-5 Ariel Delivery Container and Parachute, A-5 delivery container used widely throughout all the major US airborne operations in WW2. This example is complete with both end caps and the quilted blanket section. Both ends are appropriately marked ‘Left’ and ‘Right’. The securing straps and buckles all appear to be in place with a container type parachute attached via the standard style of hook clips. One end cover has unfortunately suffered storage damage by rot or rodent and has in turn damaged the corner of the blanket within. The parachute is of a post war origin. PLEASE NOTE WE ARE NOT ABLE TO OFFER IN HOUSE POST AND PACKING ON THIS LOT DUE TO SIZE AND WEIGHT, SPECIALIST SHIPPING OR PERSONAL COLLECTION ONLY.
German Bundeswehr Station / Desk Clock, good example of a post WW2 station clock, similar to the WW2 version, housed in painted wooden casing. 24 hour dial with subsidiary seconds dial. Original hands. Case wound on the reverse. Case with makers mark believed to be for Tobias Bäuerle, also stamped ’12-120-1511 2169’. Still in working order.
WW2 Royal Air Force Medals, Log Books and Archive of Sergeant K S Fish (Fisher) Air Gunner with No223 Squadron in North Africa and Malta, the medal group consists of 1939-45 star, Atlantic star, Africa star with North Africa 1942-43 bar, Defence medal and 1939-45 War medal with MID oakleaf. The log book being a pilots type, covers his service with training in 1943 and then operationally with No223 squadron with many operations noted in short period of time. Other items in the group include many photographs during his service, various service and release books, documents both wartime and post war (some being of civilian life which refer to him as Fisher as opposed to Fish). Framed display with a pilots wing and air gunners brevet, caricature picture of him , two watercolour paintings of wartime scenes and large framed aircrew silk map of North Africa. An interesting grouping worthy of further research.
Impressive WW2 Signed Japanese Prayer Flag, large printed silk Japanese meatball flag with full black ink signed signatures across the whole flag. Leather and cord fittings to the corners of one side. The flag has been professionally mounted and housed in a modern glazed display frame. Due to size, weight and fragile construction (glass) we are not able to offer in house post and packing on this lot. Specialist shipping or personal collection only.
American US Marine Corps (USMC) M1 Helmet, Post war US M1 helmet, this one being a swivel bale, rear seam example. The liner made by ‘Mine Safety Appliance Co’ is in great condition with its leather sweat band and chin strap. The shell in its original OD paint with a camo net and a USMC camo cover on top. Good piece for display purposes.
WW2 German 1944 Period 8x30 Binoculars by Carl Zeiss, Jenna, in Bakelite Case of Issue, fine pair of post 1944 period binoculars with the late war company code for Carl Zeiss, ‘rln’. The set are marked ‘Dienstglas 8x30 2204570 rln +’. With the leather lens cover and leather shoulder strap. Binoculars are housed in rare late war red bakelite case of issue with securing strap to the front, belt loops and side mounts. Optics remain clear.
US Army Paratroopers Helmet, US airborne helmet, made up with period parts dating to the post war period. The shell itself is a rear seam, swivel bale type with post war chin straps that have been stitched together from parts. The shell is US origin with heat/lot number stamped to the inner rim, part visible ‘128A’ shows but not clear. The liner is an original airborne jump liner with the ‘Westinghouse Electrical Co’ stamp to the inside. The A frames with typical Westinghouse style buckles, are held in with the liner band rivets and leather chin cup in situ. Overall a good entry level helmet to fill a gap in a US Airborne collection.
US 101st Airborne Vietnam War Uniform and Equipment Museum Display Mannequin, Complete mannequin set up of a 101st Airborne private in the Vietnam war. The ‘tropical Combat’ poplin jacket and trousers are of the rip-stop type and of a good copy. The jacket is badged up with the 101st AD ‘screaming eagle’ to the left upper am. Name tapes and the wings qualification patch sit above the chest pockets. The webbing set is of the M56 pattern and looks to all be original. Comprising of the belt, 2x ammo pouches, water bottle and cover, butt pack, M7 bayonet for the M16 and cross straps. A Claymore mine bag and jungle boots accompany this trooper. The helmet is an original period airborne helmet in which is completed with the A frame chin strap and liner. A 1969 dated cover which is well worn, and helmet band compliment the helmet nicely. The mannequin is included, unfortunately his hand is missing. No item has been removed from this display mannequin and inspected for marks, dates, sizes etc. Sold as seen. PLEASE NOTE WE ARE NOT ABLE TO OFFER IN HOUSE POST AND PACKING ON THIS LOT DUE TO SIZE AND WEIGHT, SPECIALIST SHIPPING OR COLLECTION ONLY.
WW2 Polish Air Force Badges and Paperwork Archive of Famous Polish Zoologist and Professor Kajetan Ludwik Boratynski, Being Shot Down and Captured Until Liberation in 1945, a most interesting grouping of items which relates to this officer and also items relating to another Polish air force officer by the name of Sylvester Godlewski who was killed in a flying accident in 1942. The badges in the grouping consist of two variations of Polish Army cap badges, Polish air force cap badge with thin blade fittings to the reverse, RAF pilots wing and a cloth observers wing. Also with the badges is a Polish pilots badge with the remains of the gilt finish to the wreath, screw back fitting with all the details erased and a enamel badge for the Deblin Air Force officers school which is numbered to the reverse ‘386’. Other items of insignia include a identity bracelet engraved with Polish air force eagle and ‘dr BORATYNSKI K F/O P-0615’ a coin bracelet and a pair of Polish air force cuff links with his initials. The paperwork and photograph archive is really interesting also, it includes a number of pre-war, wartime and post war documents. Some of the highlights of the documents include his Polish Army Air Force identity card with uniform photograph dated 19th Mai (May) 1940, pre-war linen identity pass document, 1933 Polish officers service book, etc. Other interesting items are the original documents, single identity disc of the other Polish air force officer, Sylvester Godlewski, including the RAF form 96 ‘Message Form’ informing Boratynski that he had been killed in a flying accident. We are unsure of the relationship between the two men, possibly family members or close friends? Really nice grouping of photographs, including many showing fellow airmen wearing Polish air force uniform and badges etc. Postcards sent to Blackpool, where he was stationed at one time etc. A very interesting grouping which needs to be carefully sorted and looked at, we would recommend personal viewing if possible to appreciate this group. Kajetan Ludwik Boratyński was born on July 27, 1907. After the outbreak of WW2, he evacuated with his unit, avoiding the besieged Warsaw, to the east. On the day of the Soviet aggression against Poland, September 17, 1939, at 10:30, he was taken prisoner by the Red Army in Jagielnica near Czortków. That same evening, he managed to escape from a convoy of prisoners, together with Lieutenant Observer Zbigniew Siarkowski and Second Lieutenant Medical Officer Marian Turski. The next day, at 8:30 p.m. after dark, he forded the Dniester in Zaleszczyki, reaching Romania. Boratyński initially stayed in the city of Călimănești, and then (from 3 to 13 October) in the internment camp in Drăgășani. After receiving a passport from a courier arriving from Bucharest, he escaped and left for Constanța. There, on 20 October, he boarded a ship to France. After a voyage via Istanbul, Piraeus, Alexandria and Beirut, he arrived in Marseille on 13 November 1939. He was sent to the air base in Lyon-Bron. After the establishment of the Aviation Training Centre, on 15 December 1939, he was transferred to Lyon-Foire. Until the fall of France, he served in various positions in the 3rd and 4th Reserve Squadrons of the CWL, to which privates of the air force were assigned. After the fall of France, he was evacuated by sea to Great Britain. From 14 July 1940 he was stationed at the Weeton Air Camp, from where he was transferred to Blackpool Air Force Base on 3 August. He served in the Staff Squadron of the Ground Training Centre. Boratyński applied as a candidate for the flying staff. From 31 January to 14 June 1941 he trained at the theoretical course for gunners-radio operators and navigators in Blackpool. After completing it, he was assigned as an adjutant to the Officers' Squadron of the Ground Training Centre, and then (at the turn of June and July 1941) to the 305th Bomber Squadron "Ziemia Wielkopolska". The unit was stationed at RAF Syerston and was equipped with Wellington IC aircraft. It was quite an unexpected assignment, because at that time all new members of flying bomber squadrons had previously undergone crew integration courses in combat training units. Meanwhile, everything indicates that Boratyński joined the bomber squadron without having previously taken part in a single training flight. Despite this, he took part in three combat flights as a front gunner and also a reserve radio operator. On the night of 9–10 July, he took part in the raid on Osnabrück in the crew of Capt. Pilot Karol Zaucha. On the night of 14–15 July, he flew over Bremen in the crew of Sergeant Pilot Stefan Tomicki, and three nights later he bombed Cologne as a member of the crew of Squadron B commander, Major Pilot Szczepan Ścibior. His superiors quickly realised the mistake concerning Boratyński, and on 16 August 1941 he was assigned to the 9th Air Observer School at RAF Penrhos in Wales. After practical training (he flew Ansons, Blenheims and Defiants), on 19 April 1942 he was assigned to the 18th Operational Training Unit (18 OTU) in Bramcote. He began flying Wellington bombers as part of a crew integration course: mainly navigation flights and practice bombing. On the night of 25–26 June 1942, three crews from 18 OTU completing their training programme were also selected for the planned “thousand bomber raid” on Bremen. Boratyński’s crew took off on board Wellington IC XW-N (DV765): Sergeant Józef Laudan, Rtgt Cpl. Czesław Rajpold, Sergeant Wacław Kowalik and Sergeant Alojzy Pozorski. On the return flight, their plane was attacked and hit by a German night fighter. The seriously damaged Wellington managed to escape the enemy, but some time later its left engine caught fire. The pilot decided to make a forced landing northwest of Leeuwarden in the Netherlands. None of the crew were hurt. The Poles set the plane on fire and then moved forward to get away from the wreckage and avoid capture. That same day, while resting in haystacks, they were arrested by Dutch police and German soldiers. Boratyński was taken to the Dulag Luft 3 transit camp in Oberursel near Frankfurt am Main. From there he was sent to Stalag Luft 3 in Żagań. He was imprisoned in the camp for the next few years and, as it turned out towards the end of the war, he was the only one of over a hundred Poles to be taken prisoner as an airman of the 18th OTU. On 27 January 1945, the prisoners of Stalag Luft 3 were evacuated to the west. Boratyński's group, first marching, then travelling by train, reached the Marlag naval POW camp in Tarmstedt. On 2 April 1945, another evacuation took place from there, marching to Lübeck. Exactly one month later, this group was liberated by British army units. After returning to Great Britain, Boratyński was sent to the Air Force Base in Dunholme Lodge, from where on 25 July 1945 he was transferred to the staff of the Polish liaison officer at the RAF Transport Command in Bushy Head near London as an educational officer and public relations officer.

Royal Air Force Casualty Log Book Grouping, relating to Air Gunner Vivian C Topham No 462 Squadron RAAF who was lost on air operations on the night of 6/7th January 1945. The log book begins with training in March 1944, he was posted to 462 Squadron in late November 1944 with his first operation as a Mid Upper Gunner to Duisburg on 30th November 1944. He flew operationally another four times before his final missing where they were flying as Bomber support in the Ruhr area and his plane was shot down on the return journey, where he and the rest of his crew were killed. He was flying on Halifax Z5 N with his pilot being P/O Rohrlach. What makes this log book interesting and poignant is the large archive of letters and photographs relating to Topham, many written to and from his parents in relation to his first reporting missing and then later notification of him being killed in action, it would appear that he was buried at first with another one of his crew members, as he could not be accurately identified, but later re-interned in military cemetery in his own grave. Apart from the paperwork, other items in the group include photographs, models and items supposedly from the wreck. The archive makes for fascinating reading and brings home the horrors the family’s of lost aircrew must have gone through from notification of their son’s being reported missing to finally being notified of their deaths. Topham was from Turo, Cornwall, appears family later moved to Tiverton, Devon. His father being well known in the city as working with the Post Office and later with the Press, (some documents also relate to him and other members of the family). Commonwealth War Graves Commission shows that Vivian Topham now rests in Hotton war cemetery, Belgium, alongside other members of his crew. He was just 19 at the time of his death.

Mixed Services Organisation (MSO) British Army of the Rhine / 21st Army Group Battle Dress Blouse, good example of an early post WW2 battle dress blouse in black wool, with woven ‘M.S.O’ shoulder titles above 21st army group formation signs and an unusual four bar rank patch in silver thread. Interior with issue label. The Mixed Service Organisation (MSO) was a civilian arm of the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) which employed displaced persons as drivers, clerks, mechanics and guards. Originally formed as Watchman and labour units in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War the MSO employed citizens of Eastern European nations occupied by the Soviets. These former prisoners of war, concentration camp inmates and forced labourers were left in western sectors of occupied Germany at the end of the war and chose not to return to their countries of origin. Whilst some displaced persons only worked with the organisation for a short time others stayed until retirement age. The MSO was organised in a structure similar to British Colonial Units, with a British Commanding Officer and senior Non-commissioned officers operating over a 'native' officer and NCO structure.
