BENNETT DON: (1910-1986) Australian aviation pioneer and bomber pilot who rose to be the youngest Air Vice Marshal in the Royal Air Force and led the 'Pathfinder Force' from 1942-45 during World War II. Signed postcard photograph of Bennett in a head and shoulders pose wearing his uniform. Signed in blue ink with his name alone to a clear area of the image. Together with a further six printed images, each neatly removed from books or magazines, of varying sizes, each signed by Bennett and depicting him in various uniform poses, alongside Lord Trenchard, chairing a meeting in the Operations Room of the Pathfinder Force etc. One of the images is colour and all are signed by Bennett with his name alone in blue ink. BARBER REX T: (1917-2001) American Colonel with the United States Army Air Forces, a fighter pilot best known as a member of the top secret mission to intercept the aircraft carrying Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto in April 1943. Small selection of three signed postcard photographs by Barber, one depicting him seated in the cockpit of his aircraft and another showing him, in later years, standing alongside Japanese fighter pilot Kenji Yanagiya (who was escorting Yamamoto in 1943), together with a further four printed images, each neatly removed from books or magazines, of varying sizes, each signed by Barber and depicting aircraft in flight etc. Several of the images are colour and all are signed by Barber in blue or black inks with his name alone in later years. Vintage signed sepia postcard photograph of Schacht in a formal head and shoulders pose. Signed in fountain pen ink with his name alone to the lower border. Neatly annotated in ink in the hand of a collector to the lower edge and verso. A couple of very light, minor corner creases, VG

KEITEL BODEWIN: (1888-1953) German General of World War II who served as head of the Army Personnel Office. Brother of Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel. D.S., Keitel, one page, 8vo, Hauptquartier, 20th April 1942, in German. The partially printed document, completed in typescript, is an award document in which Hauptmann Dr. Hermann Volckmann is made the recipient of the War Merit Cross 1st Class with Swords. Signed by Keitel at the foot alongside an official circular stamp featuring the Nazi eagle and swastika. Together with an unsigned vintage postcard photograph of Keitel seated in a half-length pose wearing his uniform, and also including an A.L.S. by Ilse Keitel, on two sides of a plain postcard, Gottingen, 10th June 1958, to Stephen Bumball, in German (untranslated). Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Keitel and signed ('Frau I. Keitel') by her in the return address panel to the verso. VG to about EX, 3

Manteuffel thanks his correspondent for their kind wishes which he reciprocates in the same fairmindedness manner. Partially hand addressed by Manteuffel. [HOUSE OF ROMANOV]: An early 20th century oblong 4to hardbound album containing over fifty unsigned postcard photographs and numerous other magazine images etc., each related to Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, whose abdication in 1917 ended the Romanov dynasty's rule of Russia, and his immediate family, all laid down in multiples to the stiff card pages, the subjects including individual and group portraits of Tsar Nicholas II, Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna, their five children, Grand Duchess Olga, Grand Duchess Tatiana, Grand Duchess Maria, Grand Duchess Anastasia and Tsesarevich Alexei, depicting them in outdoor poses, being driven in horse drawn carriages, on the deck of a ship, outside various buildings, rowing in the Gulf of Finland, attending church at Homburg, attending military parades, the four daughters of the Tsar with their governess, Grand Duchesses Olga and Tatiana shopping in Cowes, a few with members of other Royal families including Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, King George V etc. The majority of the images are accompanied by English captions, many of the postcards are real photographic examples published by either Beagles or Rotary, and others are of Russian origin with Cyrillic captions etc. Binding loose and the album lacking its spine and with the back cover detached. TROTSKY LEON: (1879-1940) Russian Marxist Revolutionary. Founder and first Leader of the Red Army. Assassinated. Very rare A.L.S., `Leon´, one page, small 8vo, Pachuca, Mexico, 8th July 1937, to Frida Kahlo, in French. Trotsky, deported from Norway, landed in Mexico only six months before the present letter was written, in January 1937, when he and his wife were hosted by Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo in their own home. Shortly after and seduced by Kahlo´s charms, they had an affair, as the present letter demonstrates, Trotsky annotating at the base `Je t´……….´, being the starting letters of `Je t´aime´ (`I love you´). Trotsky states `Je n´ai pas réussi à envoyer hier la carte postale ; je la met dans l´enveloppe parce que je suis obligé d´envoyer les lettres par l´intermédiaire de l´administration de M. Gomez( ?) et ma carte postale parrait être comprise comme une ``plainte´´. Mes saluts les plus chaleureux´ (`I did not manage to send the postcard yesterday; I put it in the envelope because I am obliged to send the letters through the administration of Mr. Gomez(?) and my postcard seems to be understood as a ``complaint''. My warmest greetings´) With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by the original envelope, postmarked and stamped in Mexico. Small overall age wear with a vertical crease, otherwise G    Trotsky was exiled to Kazakhstan in January 1928, and was later expelled from the Soviet Union to Turkey in February 1929, accompanied by his wife Natalia Sedova and their eldest son, Lev. He made requests to enter Belgium, France, Norway, Germany and the United Kingdom, but all refused access.In July 1933, Trotsky was offered asylum in France although he was forbidden to live in Paris and found himself under the surveillance of the French police. In February 1934 a decree was issued to deport Trotsky from France. Trotsky would then be admitted in Norway where he lived from 1935 to 1936. Almost all Trotskyists who were still within the Soviet Union's borders were executed in the Great Purges of 1936-1938. In December 1936, Trotsky and his wife were deported from Norway after spending the last four months under house arrest, at a farm distant from Oslo, harshly treated and forced to stay indoors for 22 hours per days and under the constant guard of thirteen policemen. Deported by the Norwegian authorities, Trotsky arrived to Mexico in January 1937.From January 1937 to April 1939, Trotsky and his wife lived in the Coyoacan area of Mexico City, at La Casa Azul (The Blue House), the home of the painter Diego Rivera and his wife and fellow painter, Frida Kahlo, with whom Trotsky had an affair. His final move was a few blocks away to a residence on Avenida Viena in April 1939, following a break with Rivera.Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) Magdalena Frida Kahlo y Calderón. Mexican surrealist Painter, known for her self-portraits and naive folk Mexican art. Kahlo married Mexican artist Diego Rivera, and is regarded as an icon for feminism movements.Diego Rivera (1886-1957) Mexican Painter, husband of Frida Kahlo.

BAKER JOSEPHINE: (1906-1975) American-born French entertainer. A group of seven A.Ls.S., mainly Josephine Baker, one unsigned (although with a small illustration in her hand), each to the versos of picture postcards, various places (Spain, Austria, Norway, Brazil, Argentina), n.d. (late 1920s), all to the manager of L'Auberge du Pere Louis restaurant in Paris, in French. Baker writes a series of social letters to her correspondent, hoping that he is in good health, that she is thinking of him even though she is far away, sending her good wishes for Easter, Christmas and the New Year, remarking that Valencia is beautiful but she has not found a hostelry as good as his, etc. On one postcard Baker has drawn a simple caricature of herself ('moi') seemingly crying a pool of tears as a chicken flies away from her. Five of the postcards are also signed by 'Count' Giuseppe Pepito Abatino, most with additional notes in his hand. An unusual group of correspondence dating from one of Baker's earliest tours, having established herself as the most successful American entertainer working in France. Some extensive age wear and faults, staining, age-toning, and one card with heavy creases, a few tears and areas of paper loss. FR to about G, 7 'Count' Giuseppe Pepito Abatino (1898-1936) Italian manager of Josephine Baker, who also became her lover, and was responsible for transforming Baker's stage and public persona, as well as her singing voice.

Vintage signed sepia postcard photograph of Baker standing in a full-length pose, en pointe, holding out her dress with outstretched arms. Signed ('Souvenir de Josephine Baker') in dark fountain pen ink to a light area at the base of the image. Apparently in some confusion as to which European capital city Baker found herself in, the entertainer initially dated the photograph at Paris, 1933, before striking through Paris and correcting it to Bruxelles. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, about VG

FALLA MANUEL DE: (1876-1946) Spanish Composer. A very good A.L.S., Manuel de Falla, one page, to a postcard, Granada, 27th August 1926, to Madeleine Greslé, in French.. The composer sends a lengthy and small writing letter to his friend and Singer Madeleine Greslé, stating `Très heureux d´avoir de vos nouvelles, dont j´étais privé depuis trop longtemps; mais désolé de ne pas pouvoir quitter Grenade cet été à cause du travail urgent. C´est pourquoi le concert en question a été remis à l´été prochain. Autrement je n´ai pas besoin de vous dire quelle aurait été ma joie vous accompagnant les chansons et vous les écoutant encore une fois! Heureusement ma santé est bonne cet été et le travail marche bien à mon aise´ ("Very happy to get news from you, of which I was deprived for too long; but sorry for not being able to leave Granada this summer because of the urgent work I have to complete. This is why the concert in question has been postponed until next summer. Otherwise, I don´t need to tell you how happy I would have been accompanying your singing and listening to you singing them once again! Fortunately my health is fine this summer and work is going well and at my ease.") Falla further asks for updated news of a common friend, Debussy´s wife, saying `Il y a un siècle que je suis sans Nouvelles de Madame Debussy…´ ("It looks like a century has passed since I had last news from Madame Debussy…") The postcard bears to the front an image of the Alhambra of Granada, also bearing to a corner an additional affectionate souvenir message in the hand of Falla. PUCCINI GIACOMO: (1858-1924) Italian Composer. A.L.S., `Giacomo´, to a postcard, Torre del Lago, 28th June 1917, to Carlo Claussetti at Ricordi, Milan, in Italian. To the verso of an attractive postcard photograph showing a landscape image of Torre del Lago, Puccini asks for news from his correspondent `Che fai? Che apri? Che scruti? ("What are you doing? What are you on with? What are you scrutinizing?"), further, with an interesting comment referring to his composing work, states in part `Io sono presso al finale ma….. e duro - pero spero verrà come dio delibera!´ ("I am near the end although… .. it is hard - but I hope that it will come as God decides!") Puccini also asks for news from Tito Ricordi. Postmarked and stamped at Torre del Lago. VG At the time of the present letter Puccini was composing Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi.

CUI CESAR: (1835-1918) Russian Composer, a member of The Five Group. Professor, Engineer and General. A very fine A.M.Q.S., `C. Cui´, to the lower clear front image of a Russian postcard, n.p. [Saint Petersburg], dated in his hand 1904. Cui has carefully penned a musical quote, consisting of four bars of music, adding the musical tempo `Alegretto´ to the heading, and adding beneath the musical quote the voice text in Italian `Fior di primavera tremano sulla stel..´ ("Spring flowers tremble on the star.."), also entitling the work as Barcarolle above his signature. The front postcard image shows a panoramic view of the Nevsky Prospect avenue of Saint Petersburg, and is addressed to the verso to Sofia Buonamici, in Florence. VG

Signed and inscribed in bold black fountain pen ink to the lower right corner, also dated in his hand in 1925. The postcard photograph has been very slightly affixed to a larger 8 x 10 beige card. LUXEMBURG ROSA: (1871-1919) Polish-German Revolutionary, a Marxist Philosopher and anti-war Activist. Luxemburg was summarily executed by the SPD Freikorps when they crushed the revolt known as The Spartacist Uprising. An idolized and controversial historical figure in Poland and Germany. Very rare and unusual multiple signed A.L.S., `Rosa Luxemburg´, one page, to a postcard, n.p. [Germany], n.d. [30th March] 1905, to comrade André Morizet, in French. The unusual postcard includes three different written texts signed by three different women, the first seven lines paragraph in the hand of Rosa Luxemburg, a second nine lines paragraph beneath in the hand of Henriette Roland Holst-van der Schalk (1869-1952) Dutch Poet and communist Activist. She was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature, and a third one of three lines to the left border by Luize Kautsky (1864-1944) German Politician. A member of the USPD. She married the prominent Marxist theorist Karl Kautsky. As a Jew she was deported in 1944 to Auschwitz where she died. Luxemburg states `Cher camarade Morizet! Trois charmantes dames: Mme Luize Kautsky, Mme Henriette Roland-Holst et moi viennent vous déposer une prière: veuillez bien nous envoyer à nous deux dernières les deux photographies de `la danse du ventre´ de Van Kol, que vous avez envoyées à Kautsky. Nous sommes très envieuses de les posséder aussi. Mille remerciements d´avance et salut fraternel´ («Dear comrade Morizet! Three charming ladies: Mrs. Luize Kautsky, Mrs. Henriette Roland-Holst and I come to leave with you a prayer: please send to us last two the two photographs of `the belly dance´ of Van Kol, which you sent to Kautsky. We are very envious to own them too. Many thanks in advance and fraternal salute ») Beneath, Henriette Roland states in part `Cher Camarade, Cela vous étonnera peut-être que j´exprime le désir de posséder la photographie de Van Kol…., mais à vrai dire, c´est moins de lui qu´il s´agit pour moi que de mon mari, qu´on voit également sur les photographies…´ («Dear Comrade, It may surprise you that I express the desire to own the photograph of Van Kol…, but to tell the truth, it is less about him than about my husband, also appearing in the photographs... ») To the right border, Luise Kautsky states `Cher Camarade, comme la troisième des grâces, je vous salue gracieusement, et de grâce envoyez vite les photos..´ («Dear Comrade, as the third of the graces, I greet you graciously, and have the grace of quickly sending the photographs ») An excellent document including three main figures, three women, representing the Socialism and Communism political movements of the early years of the 20th century. Postmarked and stamped. Small ink stain only affecting a word of Roland´s text. Overall age toning and very light staining, otherwise G

FROMME LYNETTE: (1948-     ) American Criminal, a member of the infamous Manson Family who was imprisoned for her attempted assassination of American President Gerald R. Ford in 1975. A.L.S., Red [being her name within the Manson Family], two pages, 4to, West Virginia, 29th May - 2nd July 1981, to Nuel Melton Emmons. Fromme states that she has received nothing from Emmons regarding the two wrist bands which she sent him, thinking maybe he has been on vacation, and continuing 'I took a walk around the institution - the first I've seen of it. I'm due to get out of lock-up in August & I expect my health will improve then', before returning to the subject of the wrist bands, 'Here's a stamped postcard to let me know if you rec'd all 3 wrist bands. I'm concerned about that & its hung me up'. In a postscript Fromme writes that she is preparing some articles to send to Emmons. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Fromme and signed by her with her initials ('LF') in the return address panel. MANSON CHARLES: (1934-2017) American Criminal who led the cult-based Manson Family, responsible for multiple deaths (including the murder of Sharon Tate) and the subject of Quentin Tarantino's film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. A.L.S., Riff, on one side of a plain postcard, n.p. (Vacaville, California), n.d. (4th September 1980), to Nuel Melton Emmons. Manson writes in a combination of pink and green inks regarding a television, in part, 'If you send the TV right now I can git it - I talked to the gard (sic) - you could mail it…..but if you gona (sic) send it send it while you can, if you waight (sic) we may miss the chance then we got to go through months of B.S…..'. Hand addressed by Manson to the verso. A couple of very light creases, otherwise VG Nuel Melton Emmons (1927-2002) American photojournalist and biographer of Manson. Emmons first met Manson briefly when he was imprisoned for automobile theft in 1956, and again under similar circumstances in 1960. In 1979, he contacted Manson and began extensive interviews and his correspondence with Manson resulted in the book In His Own Words - The Shocking Confessions of the Most Dangerous Man Alive (1986).

PICASSO PABLO: (1881-1973) Spanish painter, a co-founder of the Cubist movement. A good signed and inscribed 6 x 4 postcard photograph by Picasso `Para mis amigos Pallarés, 1917 Picasso´ in Spanish ("To my friends Pallarés, 1917 Picasso") Signed and inscribed in bold brown ink to the verso of a postcard showing to the front Picasso´s early work Verre et Bouteille de Rhum (1914) ("Glass and Bottle of Rum"). Attractively framed and glazed beneath a 6 x 4 image of Picasso´s painting Verre et Bouteille de Rhum, identical to the image shown to the front of the postcard, to an overall of 14.5 x 17.5 (37 cm x 17.5 cm). With very slightly light ink, otherwise G to VG The present autograph provenance is from the Pallarés family collection.Manuel Pallares i Grau (1876-1974) met for the first time Pablo Picasso, five years younger, the first day they assisted to the School of Arts in Barcelona in 1895. Since that day and until Picasso´s death, they remained friends, a friendship which last 78 years. Pallarés worked as assistant to Picasso´s father, teacher at Llotja, and replaced him when he retired. From 1896 to 1899 they spent long periods together, studying and on holidays. Pablo would spend over eight consecutive months at Horta del Ebro, village where Pallarés´ family home was located, to recover from scarlet fever. Later in his life, and during few days journey of Pallarés visiting his friend Picasso, Pablo recalled how Pallarés saved him from falling and dying drowned in a mighty river, mentioning that he didn´t know how to swim at that time, and recalling that he said `I will never forget that you have saved my life"

KHOKHLOVA OLGA: (1891-1955) Russian ballet dancer, the first wife of Pablo Picasso (from 1918-35) and one of his early artistic muses. A.L.S., Olga, to the verso of a sepia picture postcard of the altar within Belley Cathedral, n.p. (Belley), n.d. (1938?), to Man Ray, in French. Khokhlova states that they have received Man Ray's kind card, which was really very appreciated, and continues 'Nous sommes depuis 2 jours a Belley chez Gertrude Stein pour quelques jours et nous prenons apres la route pour la capitale ou nous esperons vous voir! de nous deux a vous deux' (Translation: 'We have been in Belley for 2 days at Gertrude Stein's home for a few days and we are then taking the road to the capital where we hope to see you! From the two of us to you two'). A charming letter with good association. VG Man Ray (1890-1976) American visual artist, a significant contributor to the Dada and Surrealist movements and a renowned pioneering fashion and portrait photographer. Gertrude Stein (1874-1946) American novelist, poet, playwright and art collector.

MAAR DORA: (1907-1997) French photographer, painter and poet, a romantic partner of Pablo Picasso (from 1935-43) and the subject of several of his portraits. A brief A.L.S., Dora, also signed ('Picasso') by her on behalf of Pablo Picasso, to the verso of a colour picture postcard depicting the harbour and boats at Cannes, n.p. (Cannes?), n.d. (late 1930s?), to Man Ray, in French. Maar states 'Voici un cadeau charmant' (Translation: 'Here is a charming gift') and appears to send a thousand kisses. Beneath Maar's letter appears a note signed by Rosemonde (possibly Rosemonde Wilms, the nom de plume of Rosemonde Gion de Romesnil whose portrait Man Ray had taken in 1935 for her book Reflexions d'une innocente) in French in which she thanks Man Ray for some photographs, in full, 'Merci des belles photos. Je croyais vous voir revenir. Tout le monde vous reclame' (Translation: 'Thank you for the beautiful photos. I thought I saw you coming back. Everyone calls for you'). One light surface crease, otherwise VG Man Ray (1890-1976) American visual artist, a significant contributor to the Dada and Surrealist movements and a renowned pioneering fashion and portrait photographer.

Signed colour 4 x 6 postcard featuring an image of the artwork designed by Blake for the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album. Signed by Blake with his name alone in blue ink to the lower white border. EX

DE MAISTRE ROY: (1894-1968) Australian artist. A.L.S., Roy de Maistre, to two sides of a plain postcard, Eccleston Street, London, n.d., to Sheridan Russell. De Maistre states that it was a pleasure to have seen his correspondent on Sunday, and encourages him to come again when the light lasts longer, explaining 'The sun changes in the process of work & there may be some different pictures to look at', and further discussing the prices of his work, 'Mine are considered about the usual figure for one of my rank & the size of the picture! They are usually well framed & start at £50…..I know this is expensive for most people today & I am often able to take a bit less & they can be paid for over a year or so. As my output now is rather small I have to keep my prices up as it is economically better for me to sell a few pictures at a fairly high price than to try to produce a lot of pictures that could be sold for less - I deplore this situation but have not been able to find any alternative to it…..do not give up the idea of having a picture someday. I like to think of them belonging to people who really like them'. Some light age wear and with a minor central crease, about VG

COHL EMILE: (1857-1938) French caricaturist, cartoonist and animator, regarded as 'The Father of the Animated Cartoon'. A.N.S., Emile Cohl, to one side of a plain postcard, n.p. (Paris), n.d. (29th August 1887), in French. Cohl writes 'Faultless tonight - maybe zing!' and confirms that the exact time will be 12h. Hand addressed by Cohl to the verso to Jullien at 28 Rue du Sentier. Rare. ANDREAS-SALOME LOU: (1861-1937) Russian psychoanalyst, author and intellectual whose friends included Sigmund Freud, Friedrich Nietzsche, Paul Ree and Rainer Maria Rilke. A.L.S., Lou Andreas-Salome, to one side of a plain postcard, n.p. (Gottingen), 14th February 1905, to Mr. Bronbach, in German. Andreas-Salome writes regarding a literary contribution, thanking her correspondent for having sent a first issue and remarking 'I have gone through it and like it very much. As far as a contribution from my part is concerned, I will follow up as soon as I have something appropriate, which is not the case at the moment, nor in the near future because I have to bring other projects to fruition'. Together with a small selection of similar picture postcards individually signed to the verso by various other Nobel Peace Prize winners comprising Norman Borlaug (1970), Adolfo Perez Esquivel (3; 1980), Alfonso Garcia Robles (1982) and Elie Wiesel (1986). CRICK & WATSON: Francis Crick (1916-2004) English molecular biologist, Nobel Prize winner for Physiology or Medicine, 1962. Black ink signature ('Francis Crick') to the verso of a colour picture postcard addressed to the Italian collector Roland Sensini; James D. Watson (1928-     ) American molecular biologist, co-author with Crick of the academic paper proposing the double helix structure of the DNA molecule. Nobel Prize winner for Physiology or Medicine, 1962. Two individual black ink signatures ('James D. Watson') to the verso of colour picture postcards, each addressed to the Italian collector Roland Sensini. Both have brief typed captions beneath the signatures. VG, 3

HAHN OTTO: (1879-1968) German Chemist, Nobel Prize winner for Chemistry, 1944. Hahn is considered the father of nuclear chemistry. Signed and inscribed attractive postcard, ('Otto Hahn') at the base of the front postcard, and beneath his inscription in bold blue ink `Ist das der gordische Knoten?´ being an expression meaning  (“A problem of difficult solution?”) The postcard bears to the front cover an attractive colour illustration of a skein with the printed text “Die Aufgabe Erhalt Lebendig” (“The Task of Keeping Alive”) EX

BOHR NIELS: (1885-1962) Danish physicist, Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1922. A.L.S., Niels Bohr, to one side of a picture postcard depicting a view of Amalfi and the Hotel Cappuccini, Amalfi, 25th April 1957, to Francis Perrin. Bohr informs his correspondent that he is having a wonderful Easter vacation with his wife in Amalfi and further thanks Perrin for his kind words of congratulation, remarking 'The appreciation of my modest endeavours has been a great encouragement to me, and I have been deeply moved by many friendly expressions of sympathy'. A letter of interesting association. About EX Francis Perrin (1901-1992) French physicist, son of Jean Baptiste Perrin, the Nobel Prize winner for Physics in 1922. At the time of the present letter Perrin was the French high-commissioner for atomic energy (1951-70).  In February 1952, after a long debate, Bohr had pledged his support to the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) which was formally ratified by a convention two years later in 1954.

HOLLYWOOD STARS: A vintage colour postcard featuring the printed words Greetings from Hollywood, California, to the recto, the centre of the words forming Hollywood each with different colour views of the Los Angeles neighbourhood, individually signed to the verso by six film stars comprising Orson Welles, Bing Crosby, Fay Holden, Martha O'Driscoll, Janis Paige and one other. GAGARIN YURI: (1934-1968) Soviet cosmonaut, the first human to journey into outer space, April 1961. An attractive vintage signed colour 4 x 6 picture postcard by Gagarin, the image depicting the statue of Alexander Pushkin in the centre of Pushkinskaya Square, Moscow, being admired by a small group of ladies. Signed by Gagarin in blue ink with his name alone to a clear area of the background. A couple of very light, extremely minor corner creases, VGAlexander Pushkin (1799-1837) Russian poet, playwright and novelist of the Romantic era.The statue of Pushkin featured in the postcard was unveiled by Ivan Turgenev and Fyodor Dostoyevsky in 1880. In more recent history, on 5th December 1965, it was the site of the Glasnost Meeting, the first spontaneous public political demonstration in the Soviet Union after World War II.

ARMSTRONG NEIL: (1930-2012) American astronaut, Commander of Apollo XI, the first man to walk on the moon. Black ink signature ('Neil Armstrong') to the verso of a colour picture postcard addressed to the Italian collector Roland Sensini. A magazine portrait of Armstrong in a close-up head and shoulders pose has been neatly affixed above the signature. Together with a small selection of similar picture postcards individually signed to the verso by various other astronauts and cosmonauts comprising Rick Hauck, Richard Covey, George Nelson, Tamara Jernigan, David Hilmers, Richard Truly, Vladimir Lyakhov and Aleksandr Laveykin.
