WILDE JIMMY: (1892-1969) Welsh Boxer, the first official World Flyweight Champion, 1916-23. Vintage signed postcard photograph of Wilde standing in a three quarter length pose, in a boxing stance, and wearing his Lonsdale belt. Signed in bold dark fountain pen ink to a clear area of the image and dated 1947 in his hand. Together with a bold fountain pen ink signature (‘Jimmy Wilde’) and date, 19th August 1935, in his hand on a printed correspondence card from the Crown Hotel in Lowestoft. CRICKET: A vintage postcard photograph of a Sussex CCC player signed to the verso by over fifteen cricketers individually, apparently all players who participated in a match, Sussex v. Yorkshire, at Hove on 1st September 1924, including Herbert Sutcliffe, Wilfred Rhodes, Maurice Leyland, Edgar Oldroyd, Roy Kilner, Percy Holmes, Abe Waddington, Maurice Tate, Arthur E. R. Gilligan, Ted Bowley, Tich Cornford, Albert Wensley etc., also curiously signed by the Australian cricketer Alan Fairfax. All of the signatures, with the exception of Fairfax's, are in pencil. Together with three small cards individually signed by the Australian cricketers Bert Oldfield, Bill O'Reilly (both in bold pencil), Stan McCabe and Vic Richardson, each neatly laid down to a page removed from an autograph album. The verso of the album page bears an official signed team sheet by the Indian Cricket Team in Australia 1947-48, comprising eighteen signatures (Amaranth, Hazare, Nayudu, Mankad, Sarwate, Rangnekar, Phadkar, Irani etc.). Laurel has added an inscription ('Thanks Bryan!') in his hand immediately beneath the vignette. An excellent vintage signed postcard photograph by both Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy individually, the image depicting the duo standing together in a characteristic half length pose wearing their bowler hats. Signed by each in bold blue fountain pen inks to clear areas of the background. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Laurel and post marked 13th December 1953. A colour vignette of the duo is neatly affixed to the verso, beneath which Laurel has penned the return address ('Empire Theatre, Nottingham'). A fine example, and unusually lacking an inscription. PATTI ADELINA: (1843-1919) Italian Opera Singer. A.L.S., Adelina Patti Cederstrom, three pages, 8vo, Craig y Nos Castle, Breconshire, South Wales, 23rd June 1911, to Miss. Morgan. Patti sends her correspondent and her sister thanks for a portrait medal of King George and Queen Mary which she will 'always greatly value in commemoration of June 22nd 1911 and also as a remembrance of your kindly thought of me'. Together with a vintage art nouveau postcard featuring a colour image of a young lady, signed ('Adelina Patti, Baroness Cederstrom') by Patti to a clear area and dated 1906 in her hand. The postcard possibly neatly trimmed, with one corner neatly clipped and some light overall age wear (G), the letter VG, 2 The Coronation of King George V (1865-1936) and Queen Mary (1867-1953) took place at Westminster Abbey on 22nd June 1911 and was celebrated by the Festival of Empire in London.

Vintage signed postcard photograph, the image depicting Darclee seated in a full length pose in costume as Cio-Cio San from Giacomo Puccini's opera Madama Butterfly. MUCHA ALPHONSE: (1860-1939) Czechoslovakian Painter and Decorative Artist in the Art Nouveau style. Vintage signed colour postcard, being a reproduction of Mucha’s image entitled Samostatnost (Independence) and featuring an image of George of Podebrady, King of Bohemia in the fifteenth century. The postcard would appear to date from around 1911 when the Municipal House in Prague was built and where the original of Mucha’s painting is on permanent display. Signed (‘Mucha’) in neat fountain pen ink to a clear area at the base of the image. An attractive signed image. Scarce. VG
NEWTON HELMUT: (1920-2004) German-Australian Photographer. Signed colour 4 x 6 postcard photograph, being a reproduction of Newton's image of a model standing in a full length pose for Yves Saint Laurent (1982). Signed by Newton in bold black ink with his name alone to the centre of the image. EX
MAETERLINCK MAURICE: (1862-1949) Belgian Playwright & Poet, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1911. A.L.S., Maeterlinck, unusually written to the verso of four individual postcard photographs, the images depicting different views of the Abbey of St. Wandrille (Fontenelle Abbey) in Normandy, n.p. (Normandy), 5th July 1914, to a young lady, in French. Maeterlinck informs his correspondent that he has left Nice and will spend the rest of the summer with his wife at the Abbey in Normandy, about thirty kilometres from Rouen, and continuing ‘When you go through France on your way back to England, it will be easy for you to stay for a few days. The Abbey is half-way between Rouen and Dieppe; there are excellent ships to Newhaven everywhere, so this would not even be a detour for you.’ Some light age wear and some staining to the upper edge of the first postcard, not affecting the text. Fountain pen ink signature ('W B Yeats') and date, 16th March 1914, in his hand on a vintage colour postcard featuring an Irish coastal landscape and issued for St. Patrick's Day. 'I thought of an idea for a new play yesterday….' ORTON JOE: (1933-1967) English Playwright and Author. Rare A.L.S., Joe, to the verso of a colour picture postcard of the Zauia Muley Abdelkader gate in Tetuan, Morocco, n.p. (Tangier?), n.d. (1965), to an unidentified correspondent. Orton writes, in full, 'The weather is terrific, and I'm having a most relaxing time. I thought of an idea for a new play yesterday, but perhaps it wouldn't work in a cold climate!! Give my love to Oscar'. Orton has also penned the address of his apartment in Tangier. Autographs of Orton are rare in any form following his tragic murder at the age of 34 when he was bludgeoned to death by his partner Kenneth Halliwell, who subsequently committed suicide. EX Orton's play Loot opened in Cambridge on 1st February 1965 and met with scathing reviews. The playwright was at odds with the director, and despite producing much new material for the play, Loot continued to be poorly received during a six week tour of Brighton, Oxford, Manchester and other English towns. Discouraged, Orton departed on an 80 day holiday to Tangier with his partner Kenneth Halliwell. It was during this holiday that the present postcard was written.
SITWELL SACHEVERELL: (1897-1988) English Writer. Small series of six A.Ls.S., Sacheverell Sitwell, nine pages (total), oblong 8vo (and one brief letter to the verso of a postcard), Towcester, Northamptonshire, 1967-1972, all to Paul Turok in New York. Sitwell, a noted music critic, writes to his correspondent on a variety of subjects relating to classical music, in the first letter referring to Hector Berlioz‘s compositions, in part, ‘You have noticed what is obviously a very silly misprint. It is very odd I should have missed it. Obviously I meant Symphonie Fantastique, the Grande Messe des Mortis, and Te Deum. But now I wd. Say Les Troyens was his masterpiece. Wouldn’t you?’ (9th November 1967), and in subsequent letters stating, in part, ‘Thank you very much indeed for sending me your Fantasia on Liszt’s “Grey Clouds”. It looks very interesting’ (18th January 1970), ‘Your Three Transcendental Etudes, Op.30 came this morning. I have got one or two friends who are good pianists, and I must get one of them to play them to me….I am wondering if The Bell of Arcos is about the Spanish town Arcos de la Frontera in Andalucia!’ (20th March 1970), ‘…I have been grappling with the typewritten proofs of an immensely long book (200,000 words) which have driven me nearly crazy - but now they are finished!…Death of a Fly is the opening chapter of the book I mentioned, and I will be sending you a copy of it when it appears’ (10th July 1972). Together with a vintage folding oblong 8vo Christmas greetings card inscribed by Edith Sitwell (1887-1964) British Poet & Critic, elder sister of Sacheverell Sitwell, the card featuring a facsimile signature and greeting although with an ink inscription by Sitwell, also adding the first name of her brother, Osbert Sitwell (1892-1969) English Writer, in her hand. EASTMAN GEORGE: (1854-1932) American Entrepreneur, founded the Eastman Kodak Company. Fountain pen ink signature ('Geo Eastman') on a vintage colour postcard of the public garden at the Hotel De La Grande Bretagne in Nice. Signed to a clear area of the image. Neatly annotated in ink in the hand of a collector to the lower white border and also dated 28th December 1912 to the verso. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, about VG
TITANIC: A vintage colour postcard photograph of the Titanic Memorial at Southampton individually signed by three female survivors of the RMS Titanic disaster, Millvina Dean, Eva Hart and Edith Haisman. Each have signed with their names alone in blue inks, largely to clear areas of the image. Some very slight, minor age wear to the corners, otherwise VG
HAHN OTTO: (1879-1968) German Chemist, Nobel Prize winner for Chemistry, 1944. Hahn is considered the father of nuclear chemistry. A vintage signed 4 x 6 colour postcard, the image depicting a botanical plant and with a printed calligraphic quotation in German. Signed in bold blue fountain pen ink by Hahn to a clear area at the base and dated Gottingen, 1964 in his hand. Together with an autograph envelope signed by Hahn, addressed in his hand to Miss Clara Lieber at Butler Hall, 119th Street, New York City, also providing an alternative address at West Washington Street in Indianapolis, signed (‘Prof. Otto Hahn’) by Hahn in fountain pen ink to the verso. Although not bearing any post marks, the envelope most likely dates from the time when Hahn was interned at Farm Hall in England, 1945-46. [FREUD SIGMUND]: (1856-1939) Austrian Neurologist, the father of Psychoanalysis. JONES ERNEST (1879-1958) British Neurologist & Psychoanalyst, the official biographer of Sigmund Freud. T.L.S., Ernest Jones, on one side of a postcard, Midhurst, 14th August n.y., to Dr. Alfred v. Winterstein in Vienna. Jones thanks his correspondent for the full information about the Society meetings 'and Sigm. Freud Hof.', further enquiring 'I presume the latter is a new building'. VG

TAFT WILLIAM H.: (1857-1930) American President 1909-13. A vintage postcard photograph, the image depicting the empty interior of the Supreme Court at Washington D.C., signed by Taft in bold black fountain pen ink with his name alone to a clear area of the image. Some slight smudging to a couple of letters of the signature. Unusual in this form. VG Taft served as Chief Justice of the United States from 1921-30.
