Friedensreich HundertwasserWatercolour from "La Lune en Rodage"1953-59watercolour on paper; framed11.7 x 10.5 cmsigned on the right: Hundertwasserprivate property, SwitzerlandA. C. Fürst, Hundertwasser 1928-2000. Werkverzeichnis-Catalogue Raisonné, vol. II., Cologne 2002, p. 469.The artist has cut into 240 small pieces 7 watercolours no. 155A, 157 and 159 from 1953 and no. 402, 410, 411, 413 and 415 from 1959 for the volume "La Lune en Rodage I" edition by Carl Laszlo, Basel. The pieces from the watercolours of 1953 are about postcard size, the one from the watercolours from 1959 around 50 x 30 mm. The later are partly mounted on pieces from 1953, were though mostly glued on wrapping paper primed with chalk and PV, 220 x 150 mm and surrounded with a red and blue semi-circle.The book was published in a numbered edition 150, plus 65 unnumbered specimen for the collaborators.Hundertwasser's comment on the workMy contribution to "La Lune en Rodage", Vienna, 1953 - Paris, 1959.For the album "La Lune en Rodage", edited by Carl Laszlo, Basel, I cut watercolours, numbers 155A, 157 and 159 of 1953 and 402, 410, 411, 413 and 415 of 1959, into 240 little pieces and signed them "100 " and a small number with "Hundertwasser" (150 copies in numbered editions, 65 non-numbered for artists). The pieces stemming from watercolours of 1953 are about the size of a postcard. The pieces from the watercolours of 1959 are about 5 × 3 cm. The latter are in part pasted onto the watercolour pieces of 1953, but most of them are on pieces of white-primed packing paper about 22 × 15 cm in size and with a red-and-blue watercolour semicircle around it. Since this was a bibliophile project, I only recognise the ones which are pasted into "La Lune en Rodage" and not those which have been torn out of the album and could be taken to be small-format works in their own right. 26 copies of this edition of 240 have been painted over and transformed into pictures. They are entitled Survivants de Laszlo. (from: Catalogue Kestner Gesellschaft, Hanover, 1964, p. 186)As I had feared, my tiny collages were torn out of the "La Lune en Rodage" edition, separately framed and were brought to auction as original pictures ... Einstein informs Hopf that his wife and their newborn son are ‘still not doing as expected’ so they have ceased their musical evenings until further notice, remarking ‘This also makes me homebound. If you come to see me, I am always happy’ and further writing ‘With Ignatowsky it is indeed as you suspected. He draws conclusions that contradict mine and wants my signature on them. But I have already sent him home and am currently busy with a remark about the rigid body that is destined for the annals, in which I am trying to clarify the situation through a very elementary consideration. If you come, I’ll show you this rather amusing thing’. Hand addressed by Einstein to the verso. A letter of good content and association. One heavy crease to the lower part of the letter, not affecting the text or signature, G Ludwig Hopf (1884-1939) German-Jewish theoretical physicist. Mussolini, in his usual youth small writing, explains to his friend Bedeschi his plan of leaving Italy because of the poor salaries which do not permit him to live properly and that he will establish himself in Switzerland where he has got a job, stating in part `Carissimo Bedeschi, Forse non e la cartolina che tu desideravi, ma quando tu avrai la presente io saró con tutta probabilità non piu nella terra di Dante, ma nella terra di G.[uglielmo] Tell. My very dear Bedeschi, Perhaps it's not the postcard you wanted, but when you will receive it I will most likely no longer be in the land of Dante, but in the land of G.[William] Tell. You must know that here - given the full salary - I cannot live. Add that given the barbaric regulations that rule us out, I am not entitled to monthly holiday payments - So - rather than go back to be maintained by my family - I decided to go to Switzerland where a friend found me a job as a warehouseman in a hardware stores company") Mussolini further states `Ho una leggera scorta di denaro, frutto di snodati risparmi...La citta dove vado e Ginevra. Scrivimi subito ho detto perché la tua non mi potrebbe trovar piu a Gualtieri´ (Translation: "I have a small reserve of money, the result of extensive savings...The city where I'm going is Geneva. My place is safe, but you know that when it comes to finances it's better to start out well prepared. Paying you what I owe you is a sacrifice to me today. Besides, write to me immediately and if you can't spare me the holocaust, I will bow. Write to me immediately I said, because your letter could no longer find me in Gualtieri") Mussolini also adds to the heading a kind of post-scriptum he couldn´t find space at the conclusion of his letter, saying `La vigilia della partenza ti scriveró una lettera e ti diró le vicende qui passate. percepiró a Ginevra dalle 85 alle 90 lire mensili´ (Translation: "On the eve of the departure I will write you a letter and tell you what happened. I will receive in Geneva from 85 to 90 lire per month") Addressed to the verso in Mussolini´s hand, also bearing few postmarks. Including full letter transcription. Small overall age wear with a stain to the right bottom border. FUENTES CARLOS: (1928-2012) Mexian novelist. Small correspondence collection of two T.Ls.S. and two A.Ls.S., Carlos Fuentes (and one with his first name only), each one page, 4to, various places (Paris, London etc.), 1968-92, all to Tom Maschler. The earliest letter is dated shortly after Jonathan Cape Ltd. had published A Change of Skin in 1968 to mixed reviews, and Fuentes eloquently responds by writing 'I have now seen the Observer and Sunday Times Reviews. What can I say? My mental health forces me to bannish (sic) the English critics from my head. I have come to believe that if, for one instant, I wrote a single line that would please them, I would be prostituting myself. I really wonder why a novel that has had such good critical notices in Italy, the USA and Latin America fails so miserably in Britain.....Once I have bannished (sic) Britannia Literaria from my head, what really hurts me is that your great courage and sympathy and conviction in publishing this book have met with this reception. I cannot tell you how sad this makes me feel. But all this is not important. What is important is your friendship, your warmth and intelligence' (1st November 1968). Although Cape did not publish any further works by Fuentes, his friendship with Maschler did endure, as reflected in the later letters, 'I am going to be in Mexico until mid-February and was remembering our old project to see a bit of the country together. If your travels between now and February bring you near Mexico, do please hop over' (7th September 1969), 'My mother, a rather imperious (and capricious) 84 year old dowager, has decided that this is the last summer she will be able to travel in Europe. We are taking her tomorrow for two weeks (or more) in Spain & Italy, which makes it impossible to go to you in France' (5th August 1992), 'Sorry about the numerous changes and delays - it has not been a peaceful summer - Oaxaca and its Gods are angry for forsaking them' (19th August 1992). Together with a few carbon typed copies of letters from Maschler and his secretary to Fuentes and also including a postcard with two amusing pen and ink caricatures, one of Harold Wilson. Some light age wear, generally VG, 5Tom Maschler (1933-2020) British publisher who, from 1960, was head of the publishing company Jonathan Cape for more than three decades.
