Stanislavski was widely recognized as an outstanding actor, and the multiple productions that he directed garnered him a reputation as one of the leading theatre directors of his generation. His principal fame and influence, rests on his system of actor training, preparation, and rehearsal technique. A rare signed and inscribed postcard photograph, `K. Stanislavski´, in Cyrillic, dated in his hand in 1913. The image shows Stanislavski in a head and shoulders pose. Signed and inscribed to Mme. O.I. Sokolova in bold black fountain pen ink. GOERDELER CARL: (1884-1945) German politician, an opponent of the Nazi regime. Had the 20 July plot of 1944 succeeded in overthrowing Adolf Hitler, Goerdeler was in line to serve as Chancellor of the new government. Following the failure of the plot, Goerdeler was arrested, imprisoned and tortured by the Gestapo and executed by hanging in 1945. WILHELM II: (1859-1941) German Emperor and King of Prussia 1888-1918. A vintage colour postcard featuring an image of a painting by Willy Stower depicting the German Emperor’s yacht S.M.Y. Hohonzollern sailing out of Venice in 1905, signed (‘Wilhelm I.R.’) by the Kaiser to a clear area at the base of the image, further adding a greeting in German in his hand, wishing the recipient a blessed Christmas and Happy New Year 1906. Some light, minimal age wear, about VG Willy Stower (1864-1931) German artist and illustrator during the Imperial Period, remembered for his nautical paintings. Kaiser Wilhelm II was an enthusiastic supporter and patron of the artist and Stower accompanied the Emperor on several voyages from 1905-12.

Galsworthy thanks his correspondent for having sent him a postcard 'from the place we like so much' and adds 'Its very exciting to hear that you have left Katharine to the tender mercies of the Germans', further remarking that he had been in Ireland for most of August and enquiring as to when he is going to see his correspondent again, stating that they should arrange something for when he returns to London, and also asking 'Are you very tall?' Galsworthy concludes by writing 'Please give our kindest remembrances to your father, & our love to yourself; and send greetings to Katharine when you write'. Luckner thanks his correspondent for their kind letter and for having sent a picture ‘of one of our cruisers’ and continuing ‘I send you my picture, so you know how the old sailor looks like’. EINSTEIN ALBERT: (1879-1955) German-born theoretical physicist, Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1921. A good A.L.S., Einstein, to one side of a plain postcard, n.p. (Zurich), n.d. (19th August 1910), to Dr. Ludwig Hopf, in German. Einstein writes both a scientific and social letter to his assistant, collaborator and fellow lover of music, making reference to a dispute with another physicist over the rigid bodies in the theory of relativity. Einstein informs Hopf that his wife and their newborn son are ‘still not doing as expected’ so they have ceased their musical evenings until further notice, remarking ‘This also makes me homebound. If you come to see me, I am always happy’ and further writing ‘With Ignatowsky it is indeed as you suspected. He draws conclusions that contradict mine and wants my signature on them. But I have already sent him home and am currently busy with a remark about the rigid body that is destined for the annals, in which I am trying to clarify the situation through a very elementary consideration. If you come, I’ll show you this rather amusing thing’. Hand addressed by Einstein to the verso. A letter of good content and association. One heavy crease to the lower part of the letter, not affecting the text or signature, G Ludwig Hopf (1884-1939) German-Jewish theoretical physicist. Early in his career, in 1909, Hopf was hired by Einstein as his assistant at the University of Zurich and the two scientists became collaborators and co-authors. Their friendship was helped by the fact that both were music lovers and often played duets, Hopf being a talented pianist and Einstein a violinist. Vladimir Ignatowski (1875-1942) Russian physicist who wrote some papers on special relativity and in 1910 was the first to try to derive the Lorentz transformation by group theory only using the relativity principle and without the postulate of the constancy of the speed of light. Einstein’s first wife, the Serbian physicist and mathematician Mileva Maric (1875-1948), had given birth to their second son, Eduard ‘Tete’ Einstein, on 28th July 1910. At the age of 21 Eduard was diagnosed with schizophrenia and after his father’s emigration to the United States the two never saw each other again.

T.L.S., v Manteuffel, to the verso of a colour picture postcard featuring a colour illustration of a painting of flowers by Jan van Huysum, Diessen am Ammersee, 3rd August 1977, to Colonel Edward Schaefer. Manteuffel thanks his correspondent for having sent him a magazine and continues ‘We have had till now no summer in this area, but we hope it will come because we wait for our great grandchildren from Persia/Iran’. JURGENS CURD: (1915-1982) German-Austrian actor, remembered for his portrayal of the James Bond villain Karl Stromberg in The Spy Who Loved Me (1977). T.L.S., Curt Jurgens, one page, 4to, n.p. (Beverly Hills, California), 27th January 1958, to Duane Robinson of the Amherst Theatre in Massachusetts. Jurgens states that he was deeply touched by his correspondent’s letter and continues to remark ‘I can assure you that the kindness of the American audience is a great challenge to me and I certainly will try to do my best not to deceive my public’, further adding ‘I herewith include a photo which I usually send when asked for an autographed picture, however I felt that in the States greater picture are wanted, but I have non over here. I hope that the small one will do’. Together with the signed and inscribed postcard photograph of Jurgens referred to in the letter, the image depicting the actor seated outdoors in a full-length pose. Signed by Jurgens in blue fountain pen ink, ‘Thank you so much, dear Duane Robinson, yours, Curt Jurgens’, largely to the lower white border. Accompanied by the original envelope. VG, 2

A.L.S., `G.Puccini´, one page, to an Italian postcard, Cartolina Postale, 5.5 x 3, Milan, 3rd December 1893, to his brother-in-law Raffaello Franceschini, Pescia, in Italian. Puccini is ill and states `Caro Vino, ho ricevuto il medesimo - Sono a letto aminalatto di un po di riscaldamento… predito il vino con ricevuta di ritorno per i vuoti?´ (Translation: “Dear Vino, I received the same - I'm in bed needing some heating… Do I get the wine with a return receipt for the empties?..” Overall small staining, otherwise G Raffaello Franceschini (1854-1942) husband of Puccini´s one-year younger sister, Ramelde Puccini (1859-1912). Franceschini was working as tax collector in Pescia. Puccini and his brother-in-law maintained a long-time friendly relationship, and used to share the hunting journeys.

HITLER ADOLF: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1934-45. D.S., Adolf Hitler, one page, folio, Berlin, 1st November 1934, in German. The partially printed document, completed in typescript, appoints Hauptmann Gerhard Hennig, Commander of the Straubing motor vehicle department, to be a Major with seniority from 1st November 1934, explaining that the promotion is executed ‘in the expectation that the appointee, true to the Imperial Constitution and laws, will fulfil his professional duties for the good of the Empire and justify the trust that is demonstrated in him by this appointment’ and at the same time Hitler will ‘assure him of the special protection of the Reich’. Signed by Hitler at the conclusion alongside a circular blind embossed seal featuring the Nazi eagle and countersigned at the foot by Werner von Blomberg (1878-1946) German Field Marshal who served as Minister of Defence 1933-35 and Reichsminister of War 1935-38 as well as being Commander-in-Chief of the German Armed Forces 1935-38. Two file holes to the left edge, not affecting the text or signatures. Together with two vintage unsigned postcard photographs of Hennig in different head and shoulders poses, wearing his uniform. MAGRITTE RENE: (1898-1967) Belgian surrealist artist. A.L.S., Mag, closely written to the verso of a colour picture postcard depicting an eagle perched on a tree stump, Villa Le Mas, Cannes, 24th June 1966, to Louis and Irene Scutenaire (‘Chers Scut et Irine’), in French. Magritte states that he hopes his postcard of yesterday reached his correspondents despite the insufficient stamp, remarking ‘je l'apprends aujourd'hui par un marchand de cartes au courant des usages’ (Translation: ‘I learned about it today from a card dealer familiar with the practices’; ironically the present postcard has had its original postage stamp removed, although three-quarters of the cancellation is still present) and continues to write ‘Vous saurez deja que notre voyage a dure pres de neuf heures, sans wagon restaurant. Nous voyons Cannes d'une hauteur (le soir c'est tres beau et la journee aussi). En descendant pres de la mer, le jugement sur Cannes est a reviser: nous sommes enchantes et preferons la croisette a la promenade des Anglais. Peut-etre est-ce le cote "bon enfant" - plus provincial de Nice - qui plait a nos besoins d'aventures moderes ainsi qu'il en soit, au point de vue somatique aucun desordre a signaler malgre une chaleur tres forte’ (Translation: ‘You will already know that our trip lasted almost nine hours, without a restaurant car. We see Cannes from a height (in the evening it is very beautiful and during the day too). Going down near the sea, our judgement on Cannes needs to be revised: we are enchanted and prefer the Croisette to the Promenade des Anglais. Perhaps it is the “good-natured” side – more provincial than Nice – which pleases our needs for moderate adventures as well, from a somatic point of view no disorder to report despite very strong heat’). Scutenaire was invited by Magritte to give titles to his paintings and is also the model for the figure in Magritte’s Universal Gravitation. Irene Hamoir (1906-1994) Belgian novelist and poet, wife of Louis Scutenaire. Hamoir’s poetry was published under the pen name Irine.

ITALIAN COMPOSERS & MUSICIANS: A very fine small selection of two Autograph Letters signed, one to a visiting card with small autograph musical quotation, two signed and inscribed photographs and an autograph note signed by three renowned Italian Composers and musicians of the early 1900´s, comprising MONTEMEZZI ITALO (1875-1952) Italian Composer. Best known for his opera L´Amore dei Tre Re (“The Love of the Three Kings”), 1913. Signed and inscribed postcard photograph, the image showing Montemezzi in a formal head and shoulders profile pose. Signed and inscribed in bold black ink `Omaggio di Montemezzi´, also dated in his hand `Roma, December 1938´. Together with an A.L.S., Montemezzi, to both sides of his personal printed visiting card, June 1919, stating in part `Prego mettere nell´edizione che in partiture una corona… prima della fine: una corona al canto, e una nella stanghetta, cosi…´ (Translation: “Please include in the edition and in the scores a crown sign above... before the end: a crown sign above the singing, and one in the bar line, like this...”), and bearing to the front as a continuation to the autograph letter, a small and attractive autograph musical quotation; PIZZETTI ILDEBRANDO (1880-1968) Italian Composer and Musicologist. Vintage signed and inscribed 3.5 x 5.5 photograph, the image showing Montemezzi in a half-length pose. Signed and inscribed in bold black ink `Ildebrando Pizzetti´, to the lower white border of the image, also dated in his hand `Roma, 1951´. Together with an A.L.S., `I.Pizzetti´, one page, 8vo, Milan, 8th June 1930, on the printed stationery of the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory of Music in Milan, in Italian. Pizzetti asks his correspondent to send him a manuscript `Prego di mandarmi…di quella lettera il manoscritto …´ & ROTA NINO (1911-1979) Italian Composer, Pianist and Conductor. Rota is best known for his film scores, over 150, notably for films of Fellini and Visconti. The relationship between Fellini and Rota was so strong that at Fellini's funeral Giulietta Massina, Fellini's wife, asked trumpeter Mauro Maur to play Rota's Improvviso dell'Angelo in the Basilica in Rome. Rota finally got in 1974 the Academy Award for his score for The Godfather Part II. A.N.S., `Rota´, one page, 4to, November 1955, in Italian. LETTOW-VORBECK PAUL VON: (1870-1964) Prussian General der Infanterie of World War I, commander of the Prussian Army’s forces in the German East Africa Campaign. Known as The Lion of Africa, Lettow-Vorbeck was the only German commander to successfully invade imperial British soil during World War I. A.L.S., v Lettow, to one side of a plain postcard, Bremen, 19th December 1938, to E. Hammann (?), in German. Manson writes in bold pencil and states, in part, ‘When you bring your vedio (sic) crew bring the box & we will do a vedo (sic) for your next step to rich……a vido (sic) should sell as good as books. Nechuata……offered 50 grand + 9% - if you want to play. Your books may make 2 or 3 million but music is a lot more…..’ . His fantasies on Lucia di Lamermoor or I Puritani are virtuosic tours de force that are still popular with those who are highly accomplished on the instrument. Bottesini states in part `Carissimo Cavaliere, La fiorentini vi ringrazia infinitamente. I delay my departure for Sicily for a few days…”); SGAMBATI GIOVANNI (1841-1914) Italian Pianist, Composer and Conductor. A pupil of Franz Liszt. Sgambati conducted the Italian premieres of Beethoven´s Third and Seventh symphonies. A.L.S., `G. Sgambati´, seven pages, 8vo, Rome, Via de la Croce, 7th March, n.y., to Rene, in Italian. Sgambati answers his correspondent´s letter and states, in part `La tua proposta mi a stato graditissima… stato tanto preoccupato dalla grave malattia di mio fratello… Sono agitatissimo in questo momento… vostri concerti settimanale... Io avrei accetato di gran cuore la tua gentile proposta… vuole eseguire dalla Societa orchestrale il mio Concerto per Piano e Orchestra, e la terza esecuzione nelle spazio di un mese… Alla prima esecuzione erano piu di 700 persone ogni volta. Si la tua festa fossi stato ritardata…la tua serata con un mio Progetto, di dare due concerti orchestrali a Firenze… Naturalmente …il mio concerto e un concerto di Beethoven, due poemi sinfonici di Liszt… Dimi si credi il mio projetto per Firenze effettuabile…´ (Translation: “Your offer has been very welcome... I was so worried about my brother´s serious illness… In these dates we are busy with the weekly concerts. I would have liked to have accepted heartedly your kind offer.... The Orchestral Society wants to perform my Concert for Piano and Orchestra again, it is the third performance this month and due to the high interest I can't renounce to it. At the first performance there were 700 persons each time. The image shows Mancinelli in a formal head and shoulders pose. Signed in red ink to the lower white border, also dated in his hand, 1908. GOUNOD CHARLES: (1818-1893) French Composer. An excellent and curious A.L.S, `Ch. Gounod´, addressed to French author Alexandre Dumas fils, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p., n.d., in French. Gounod congratulates Dumas as inventor, referring to a tool permitting to separate each finger and allowing more independence on each of them, and stating `J´ai été instantanément séduit par l´appareil de Mr. Dumas fils, comme on l´est par une pensée véritablement ingénieuse et par une chose vraiment trouvée. C´est un procédé très pratique et qui conduit, par une échelle très ingénieusement graduée, à la complète indépendance des doigts. J´en fais à l´inventeur mes sincères félicitations´ (Translation: `I was instantly seduced by Mr. Dumas´ artefact, in the same way you you are by a truly ingenious thought and by a truly discovered thing. It is a very practical process that leads through a very ingeniously graduated scale to the complete independence of the fingers. I give my sincere congratulations to the inventor´) To the verso, written in another hand, in pencil `From Dumas´fils autograph album´ and numered to the upper left corner as number 14. Accompanied by a vintage postcard photograph of Gounod, unsigned, the Paul Boyer image showing the French composer in a half-length pose in his later years. A.L.S., F Lehar, to the verso of a picture postcard of Budapest's National Palace, Budapest, 11th April 1924, to Dr. Max Franckel in Vienna, in German. Lehar writes, in full, 'I am busy again. Clo-Clo premieres on Tuesday. Rehearsals are currently day and night'. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VGLehar's operetta Clo-Clo had received its world premiere at the Burgertheater in Vienna on 8th March 1924. This was followed by its first performance in Budapest a month later, on 15th April 1924.
