A breathtaking sight as they stand precariously at the edge of a precipice, Mountain Goats have a certain grace about them as they play king-of-the-hill among America's most remote peaks. Here, in the most remote retreats of the mountains, they scale incredible heights, jumping from precipice to precipice with sure-footed grace. Their rough-padded hooves, split into two spreadable toes, are perfectly suited to the rugged, precipitous mountain environment. Both nannies and billies sport beards and fleecy long shaggy outer coats that protect them from the wind. They are easily distinguished from their close relatives, the Big Horn Sheep, by long, thick, black horns which grow straight up, then curve back. Billies, who generally travel alone or in groups of two or three, become rivals at mating time, occasionally butting each other, but behaving gently, almost reverently, toward the female. By late spring the kids are born. The young Goats usually weigh about seven pounds at birth and within a half an hour can jump from rock to rock. During his time at the Academy, he specialized in still-life paintings. One of the most commonly found birds of the eastern United States, the Blue Jay is distinguished from other woodland birds by its piercing jay-jay-jay. Known for mimicking the harsh cries of hawks, the Blue Jay nevertheless occasionally sings its own soft, low song and imitates the musical sounds of other songbirds. An inhabitant of forests, suburban gardens and parks, this friendly bird is often found in close proximity to humans. The Blue Jay's curious nature excites birdwatchers who enjoy observing its theatrical antics. A blue-winged bird with white on its wings and tail, the Blue Jay displays a prominent blue crest and black necklace. Black barrings appear on its wings and tail, while its breast and face are white. Though the Blue Jay is easily spotted by its vivid coloring, it is a master of camouflage, able to hide among tree branches even during winter months. An active, noisy bird, the Blue Jay often travels in small parties and enjoys eating nuts, seeds, fruits and insects. During migration, this boisterous bird travels in loose flocks of five to 50 and is a fall and winter visitor to Oregon and California. Belonging to one of the most ancient families of birds, the magnificent Sandhill Crane is a long-legged, long-necked member of the Crane family. Covered with gray plumage, the Sandhill can be distinguished by its brilliant red bald forehead. Using its six to seven foot wingspan to fly at speeds in excess of thirty miles per hour, the Sandhill elegantly glides through the skies as it migrates, usually in flocks of more than one hundred birds. Upon arriving at the nesting site, the Cranes joyously greet one another, bounding six to eight feet in the air, wings half-spread, stiff-legged and uttering a loud garooo-a-a-a call. After performing the equally intricate mating dance, the male Sandhill builds a four foot nest using marsh plants, weeds, and roots on the shallow waters of ponds or on the ground in large marshes or grasslands. Then, incubation of the two olive, spotted lavender eggs begins. Within a month, the brown-headed young Sandhills hatch, and can swim almost immediately, but are capable of flight only after several months. Later, deliberately separated from their parents, the young Sandhills fly with the flock to the wintering sites. During the winter, the Cranes roost together at night, standing in flocks on low damp land or in shallow water. Then, they fly from their roosting place at dawn to the feeding grounds. SS Cap Arcona made the first voyage as part of Hamburg Südamerikanische Dampfschifffahrts-Gesellschaft - Hamburg-South America Line from Germany to Buenos Aires in South America in 1927. During the World War II in 1940 it was requisitioned by the navy of Nazi Germany as an accommodation ship, later it was used as a set of a German propaganda movie Titanic, in 1945 it was used to evacuate German refugees from East Prussia before the advance of the Soviet Red Army, finally the liner served as a prison ship carrying Nazi concentration camp prisoners, before it along with Thielbek and Deutschland ships were bombed by the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force, which caused the sinking of all vessels in 1945.
