OSBORN ROBERT: (1904-1994) American Satiric Cartoonist, Illustrator and Author. Artist of the hapless WWII character 'Dilbert' and later known for his caricatures of presidents from Lyndon Johnson through to Ronald Reagan. A.L.S., Bob Osborn, ten pages, folio, Salisbury, Connecticut, 14th May 1994, to Herbert Mitgang. Osborn prepares his correspondent 'Brace! For a long-winded reply to your kind letter.' Further complimenting Mitgang '…your review of the Hand biography is excellent and it ought to rightfully inspire people to buy & read it.' Continuing 'One Sunday night on the Harlem R.R. “Rattler” heading for N.Y. I saw Mr. Hand 2 seats ahead facing me… Luckily I had a 10” drawing pad and a black pencil and started to draw that superb, integrated worn… compelling face. The impression of him was so strong the drawing worked. It is now in the Beinecke Library… along with 1,000 of pictures I did… & liked… from 1910 on. Lucky Osbo!' Further explaining 'that the human face… prints relentlessly… the acts & characteristics of a person's life and behaviour (see Nixon's… or the cheap, shallow mug of that Irish clown Ronny R. or his vapid star-crossed wife.' Concluding by discussing the image of Nixon in The New Republic and The Village Voice and in conclusion, reflects on his health 'bed ridden, blood transfused… & now suffering from the eyes…' In neat bold script, accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Osborn.
