Group of early 19th century portrait miniatures on paper including oval portrait of a gentleman named verso as James Vans, Midshipman, perished in the Queen Charlotte, burnt near Leghorn, March 17th 1800, 3rd son of Robert Vans Agnew of Strachan and Frances Dunlop, his wife, 7 x 6cm, in glazed frame, and three further unframed watercolours including two further variants on the same sitter and another named as Robert Vans Agnew, 2nd son of Robert Vans Agnew of Strachan and Frances Dunlop, died in Antigua of fever. (4). NB: The Queen Charlotte was a 100 gun first rate ship of the line and flagship of Admiral Lord Howe, which accidentally caught fire off the island of Capraia, The crew was unable to extinguish the flames and at about 11am the ship blew up with the loss of 673 officers and men.
