The Bjorn Waldegard/Hans Thorszelious, 1982 Motogard Rally of New Zealand-winning, Team Toyota Celica GT (#TC3) discovered and sympathetically restored to the way it was.During the Eighties, the World Rally Championship activities of Toyota Team Europe (TTE) continued to be as selective as they had been in the previous decade. The team’s calendar was largely dependent on national marketing requirements, plus the suitability of each event to the RA40 Celica 2000 GT that the team was campaigning in the top Group 4 category. The first couple of years were frustrating for Toyota as the naturally-aspirated Celica struggled to compete against a new generation of turbocharged rally cars that had started to emerge. Swedish manufacturer Saab was the first to adopt forced induction, winning its home rally in 1978 using a turbocharged front-wheel drive car, and Renault had won the 1981 Monte Carlo Rally using a turbocharged super-mini converted to rear-wheel drive. Most dramatic of all, however, Audi had started winning rallies with its new turbocharged four-wheel drive model. At WRC level, there was little that Toyota could do to become immediately competitive on the global scene. Patience was necessary because, behind the scenes, an all-new turbocharged Toyota Celica was being developed by TTE at its new base in Cologne, Germany, ready for homologation and a planned launch in 1983.However, with the new car still some way off, Toyota’s fortunes had begun to change when two examples of the new third-generation RA63 Celica 2000GT shocked the rallying fraternity by delivering an impressive result in the Group 4 class of the 1982 South Swedish Rally. Still naturally-aspirated, the coupés finished in second and third place overall in the hands of local drivers Leif Asterhag and Björn Waldegård. A little over a month later, a further development of the RA63 Celica was applied in time for the 1982 Motogard Rally of New Zealand. Though not immediately obvious from an external perspective, TTE had shifted the engine and powertrain slightly further back within the chassis of the two cars, thereby dramatically improving their traction. The Motogard Rally was not a happy event for some – Lancia failed to enter, Opel only sent one car and both Audi models experienced mechanical issues which put them out of contention – but drivers Björn Waldegård and Per Eklund put in a resounding one-two finish that marked an important historic victory for Toyota. The Celica had been campaigning in world rallying for ten years, yet this event in New Zealand was the first WRC win for the hard-working model. And that winning car is here today. Our articulate vendor has very kindly sent us an email describing his time with the Celica and we think it’s altogether more personal if we quote from it here:''The car was built in late 1981 at TTE (Toyota Team Europe) in Germany and rallied in the WRC during 1982. It was then sold some time later to the Al Kharusi brothers in Muscat Oman who rallied it for a few years. They subsequently sold it to the previous recorded keeper to me who carried on rallying it in the Middle East until bringing it to the UK in 1991. He then rallied it here until it retired from the Kent rally in the October of 1991. A little later he bestowed it to his friend and moved to America. It sat in his garage until 2009 when I purchased it. I also went out and bought two standard road cars for spare panels and parts. I still have one that will be free to the new owner along with many original works factory parts including suspension, steering, brakes, a gearbox, the original Kevlar sump guard plus other spares. I then went about stripping the car down to a bare shell, had it sand blasted and rectified any corrosion (which wasn't a lot) but without hiding any of the rallying history to the underneath apart from replacing the outer sill panels, the very lower rear quarter panels and spare wheel well. The two New Zealand cars had the engine and drive train set further and lower back and its clear to see where this was on the gearbox tunnel, bulkhead and the engine sump in relation to the steering rack. I then had new wheel arches made by a specialist and replaced all the bolt on panels and doors. Resprayed it in its original livery and then reassembled it. Importantly I have a couple of photos showing its original colours underneath as I sanded an area down on the back wing plus many other pictures before stripping it down which is how I can be sure it's an original factory shell. There are not many 40-year-old works rally cars you can say that about! Also, at this time I contacted TTE in Germany about my car and left them the chassis number. The next morning, I had a call from a really nice chap called John Day to discuss it and he was quite surprised to hear of the car because it had been off the radar for so long. He told me TC2 and TC3 had done the NZ rally and Bjorn had driven TC3. He also told me that SS at the start of the engine number stood for Super Swede who was the Swedish engine builder. I then took and sent him many photos at various different angles of the car and technical parts along with engine and gearbox numbers in between various phone calls asking for different angles. This went on for a week or so until then I heard nothing for a couple of weeks until I received via air mail a certificate of origin showing my car as TC3. At this point I realised it to be the first Celica in the world to win a WRC event. It wasn't until a while later that I noticed TC3 stamped on various parts including a welded in part of the shell. I also have other photographic evidence which makes me believe it also did the RAC rally the same year. The next year I met Bjorn Waldegard and Ernst Kopp (the other signatory on the certificate of origin to John Day from TTE) at Goodwood Festival of Speed and spoke with them about the car and how they remembered when they were building the cars that Ove Anderson who was in charge at the time, was so obsessed with keeping the weight of the cars to a minimum that he made the mechanics sand down all the panels trying to make them paper thin. We had a chat for a while and then Bjorn kindly signed a few photos of the car which will go with the car as well as a couple of magazines from the period and a Toyota Rally brochure. These are all the facts as I understand them and am happy to answer any other questions that may arise."As the first Celica in the world to win a WRC event, TC3 is an important part of Toyota and World Rallying history. Sensitively restored by our vendor, it's now ready to be used as its next owner sees fit, as part of a collection, car club rallies, Goodwood Festival of Speed, Group 4 events or simply to be enjoyed as a road car. Your earliest inspection is welcomed and encouraged to fully appreciate this very special Celica. 1990 Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth (rolling shell)Make: FordModel: Sierra Sapphire CosworthYear: 1990Mileage: 0VIN: WF0FXXGBBFLY26615Configuration: Right Hand DriveRegistration: H933AHTTransmission: ManualThis 1990 Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth was converted into a track car early in its life and, according to the RAC Motor Sports Association competition car log book that accompanies it, was in use between 1994 and 2006 as a stage rally car. Its last MoT expired in November 2008 and, at some point, it has lost its engine and transmission. Thus major recommissioning is required to return it to the road or the track. The car was registered in September 1990. The mileage is unknown, as there is no longer a speedometer. The interior has been stripped out and now has sports seats with harnesses, a roll cage, and fire extinguisher system installed, as well as other competition fitments. The paperwork folder contains just the V5C as well as the RAC competition car log book.

Lot 916

One of only 25 LG45s bodied as a Tourer and consequently much coveted and very rarely on the market.Having established its reputation by winning the Moscow - St Petersburg Reliability Trial of 1910 with a 30hp six, Lagonda concentrated mainly on the production of light cars before reverting to sporting and luxury models in the mid-1920s with the introduction of the 14/60. This four-cylinder, 2-litre model was joined in 1929 by the first of Lagonda's own sixes - the 3-Litre - but by the mid-1930s the Meadows-engined cars were seen as the way forward. Introduced at the 1933 Olympia Show and based on the preceding ZM 3-litre model, the M45 deployed Meadows' 4½-litre, twin-plug six to good effect, saloons being capable of reaching 90mph and tourers the 'ton' under favourable conditions.A team of three specially prepared short-chassis cars (effectively the soon-to-be-announced M45 Rapide) prepared by Lagonda main agents Fox & Nicholls performed creditably at the 1934 RAC Tourist Trophy at Ards, and the following year one of these TT cars driven by John Hindmarsh and Luis Fontes won the Le Mans 24-Hour endurance classic outright.Under W O Bentley's technical direction the big Lagonda became more refined: the M45's successor - the LG45 - gaining synchromesh gears, flexible engine mounts and centralised chassis lubrication among many other improvements. Endowed with such an impeccable pedigree, the 4½-litre Lagonda quickly established itself as a favourite among the wealthy sporting motorists of its day.  A mere 278 LG45s were produced between 1936 and 1937 and the model remains a much sought-after classic, however, of those 278 only 25 are believed to have been delivered as Tourers such as this offering and consequently these rare derivatives have always been coveted and rarely come to market, making this a wonderful opportunity. We understand that the first owner of this stunning LG45 was, Lord Burghley, the Olympic Athlete who became the 6th Marquess of Exeter in 1956. He inspired the scene in the film “Chariots of Fire “ when Harold Abrahams ran round the Great Court at Trinity College in the time it takes for the college clock to toll midnight!  Burghley actually accomplished this feat in his final year at Cambridge and was the first to do it taking 43.6 seconds to cover the 406 yards. Our vendor purchased the Lagonda a couple of years ago from Hyman Ltd., the well-respected US dealer in all things classic, and at that time it was finished in Old English White with dark red wire wheels, a tan leather interior and displaying an odometer reading of 98,161 miles. Surprisingly, in the photographs accompanying Hyman’s sales literature, the car is seen wearing its UK registration number, CLW 296, so presumably it had been part of a private collection and not used on US roads.Despite the fact that the car’s bodywork and trim appeared in good condition all round, our vendor decided that he wanted to totally repaint and retrim the Tourer and the result is truly spectacular. It’s now resplendent in Gloss Black with a depth of shine that is quite remarkable, the wire wheels are also in black (shod with new Dunlops all round) and the weather equipment is all new. The interior has been superbly retrimmed in a glorious Apple Green and displays a level of craftsmanship rarely seen with not a detail missed. The engine bay can only be described as immaculate and every other mechanical area that’s visible has been thoughtfully presented, not over-restored but just the way you would hope to find it. We could write further chapters about this impressive motor car but suggest that the best way to assess this beautiful and charismatic Lagonda is simply to come along and view it. With only 25 ever built and far fewer remaining, it may be your only chance to see one. With a Le Mans pedigree, dependable Meadows 4½-litre engine and smoothly operating transmission, the LG45 offers a great package of heritage, modern convenience and reliability and in this case, with its interesting provenance and amazing presentation, 12013 deserves your serious consideration.  SpecificationMake: LAGONDAModel: LG45Year: 1936Chassis Number: 12013Registration Number: CLW 296Engine Number: 12013Make: Interior Colour: Green LeatherClick here for more details and images

Lot 1406

Reg. no. 636 CFMChassis no. TS 5081Engine no. TS 1081FRBy 1952, the Triumph Roadster was starting to look and feel somewhat outdated, with its distinctly pre-war styling, and it was never a particularly rapid car in the first place. Fearing being left behind in the sports car market, Triumph’s owners Standard tried to purchase the Morgan company. When this fell through, they instead embarked on the development process of an up-to-date sports car. The result of this, the experimental 20TS, was displayed in October 1952 at the London Motor Show. Standard then employed BRM engineer and test-driver Ken Richardson to test-drive the car, and his feedback led to changes to tame the prototype’s wayward handling. While the prototype was built on a Standard 8 chassis with Mayflower suspension and an engine lifted straight from the Vanguard, the production version, launched a year later, had a strengthened chassis with excellent rigidity, much-improved suspension, larger brakes and a tuned engine. The car was also widened and lengthened, increasing both passenger and luggage space. The resulting TR2 had a top speed of over 100mph, a huge increase over the 80mph of the prototype. The 90bhp 2-litre engine could also propel the car to 60 in 12 seconds – excellent performance for the time. Indeed, a standard TR2 fitted with optional streamlining devices reached just over 124mph on the Jabbeke motorway in Belgium in May 1953, making it one of the fastest British cars of the time. 1954 saw a 1-2 finish in the RAC rally, as the car proved an excellent motorsport competitor. This being the ‘export or die’ era for British manufacturers, the majority of the 8638 TR2s made to 1955 went to the United States in left-hand-drive form. This TR2 was first registered with the DVLA in January 1957 – this being over a year since the end of production. Going by the chassis number and the Vintage Triumph Register’s list of surviving TR2s, it is actually a 1954 car. Restored at some point in the past, it remains in solid condition, with a very good interior, hood and sidescreens. A tonneau cover is also present. The bodywork is solid, although there is some micro-blistering and spidering to most areas of the paintwork. The chassis and underbody are good and appear to have been painted when the car was restored. The car has been stored for a while but has been started by the vendor with fresh petrol in the carburettors, and is said to sound good, with no evidence of oil leaks. Mindful of the potential effects of modern fuel, the tank has been drained and cleaned. The wiring is said to look good, while the tyres are also good, with the spare still present in its correct location. Following recommissioning, this TR2 would be a lovely car in which to enjoy the rest of the summer, and is also eligible for various historic motorsport events, including now VSCC hillclimbs. It comes with a current V5C.
