GUERCINO (GIOVANNI FRANCESCO BARBIERI) (ITALIAN 1591-1666) THE VIRGIN AND CHILD WITH AN OWLpen and brown ink, possibly bister 23.2 x 18.5cm; 9 1/2 x 7 1/4in43.5 x 38cm; 17 1/4 x 15in (framed)Property from a Private Collection, LondonProvenance: John Bouverie (d.1750) Anne Bouverie (d.1757; wife of the above) John Hervey (d.1764; brother of the above) Christopher Hervey (d.1786; son of the above) Elizabeth Bouverie (d.1798; aunt of the above) Sir Charles Middleton, later 1st Baron Barham (d.1813; by bequest from the above) Charles Noel, later 1st Earl of Gainsborough (d.1866; grandson of the above) Charles Noel, 3rd Earl of Gainsborough (d.1926; grandson of the above) Hon. Charles and May Noel (a wedding present from the above prior to the First World War ) Colonel Archibald Noel (inherited from the above, his mother) Thence by descent to the present owner (son of the above)Guercino’s drawings are widely celebrated for the virtuosity of their line and the sensitivity in which subject melds with graphic touch. Whether in caricatures, sacred groups, or mythological figures, Guercino imbued them with a remarkable freedom of expression, often concentrating on moments of heightened emotion and drama. Simultaneously, through the agility and unobstructed movement of their line, Guercino’s drawings permit his viewers to trace the artist’s mind at work. A diversity of graphic passages can be recognised in the present sheet - from careful parallel hatching to quick outlines and spontaneous squiggles. While the figure of the Virgin can be compared to that of Salome in Guercino’s painting, Salome receiving the Head of St John the Baptist of 1637 (Musée des Beaux-Arts, Rennes) and its associated red-chalk study (Royal Collection 902789, verso), the present sheet bears greater resemblance, in subject, style, and medium, to the pen and ink drawings of the 1620s, and in particular, The Virgin and Child with St Anne, circa 1620-25 (British Museum, inv. no. Pp,4.62).The finished nature of the present sheet further suggests that it was either intended as an end in itself or, perhaps, a preparatory study for an unexecuted print. In any case, the inclusion of an owl on the right-hand side of the composition is a curious addition. Owls, and bird imagery more generally, began appearing in Guercino’s oeuvre in the early 1620s (see the painting, Memento Mori, ca. 1622-23, in a private collection, as well as the drawings, Group of Figures, with Owl on a Pole, Art Institute, Chicago, 1922.493; A Young Man with an Owl on a Stick, ca. 1630, RISD Museum, Rhode Island, 2015.85; and The Bird-Catcher, ca. 1625-1632, Morgan Library, New York, 1979.8). In the seventeenth century, owls attracted a wide variety of interpretations, from enlightenment to salacious pursuit, all of which Guercino seems to have conveyed across several of his works. In this Virgin and Child, the owl’s presence would certainly bend the interpretation towards the clarity of spiritual vision, particularly considering the animal’s placement on the same level as the Virgin’s sightline. The sharp-eyed creature is, furthermore, an apt, if humorous, inclusion for an artist known to have been cross-eyed (il guercino being the Italian diminutive for guercio, the squinter).Adding to the fascination of this sheet is its exceptional, unbroken provenance traceable to the prestigious Bouverie Collection in the eighteenth century. John Bouverie (ca. 1723–1750) was an intrepid British art collector who amassed an array of important drawings by, among others, Michelangelo, Raphael, Rembrandt and an extensive group by Guercino. The latter may even have been acquired directly from Guercino’s descendants (see, Nicholas Turner, “John Bouverie as a Collector of Drawings” in The Burlington Magazine vol. 136, no. 109, p.91).

Editio princeps of the Epistole of Ficino.Marsilio Ficino of Florence (1433-1499), one of the most influential thinkers of the Renaissance, put before society a new ideal of human nature, emphasising its divine potential. For Ficino, the writings of Plato provided the key to the most important knowledge for mankind, knowledge of God and the soul. Ficino had been directed by Cosimo de’ Medici towards the study of Plato in the original Greek, and later formed a close connection with Cosimo’s grandson, Lorenzo de’ Medici. Gathered round Ficino and Lorenzo were such men as Landino, Bembo, Poliziano and Pico della Mirandola. The ideas they discussed became central to the work of many Renaissance writers and artists, including Botticelli, Michelangelo, Raphael, Dürer, Spenser, Shakespeare and Donne.“The Letters occupy in fact a very important place in Ficino's work. As historical documents, they give us a vivid picture of his personal relations with his friends and pupils, and of his own literary and scholarly activities. As pieces of literature, edited and collected by himself, the letters take their place among other correspondences of the time and are a monument of humanistic scholarship and literature. Finally, the letters are conscious vehicles of moral and philosophical teaching and often reach the dimensions of a short treatise. Ficino began to collect his letters in the 1470's, gradually arranged them in twelve books, had them circulated in numerous manuscript copies, and finally had them printed in 1495." (Paul Oskar Kristeller).

Lot 623

Julius II Adam 1852 München - 1913 München Spielende Katzenfamilie im Wald. Um 1860/70. Öl auf Leinwand. Rechts oben signiert. 27,5 x 40 cm (10,8 x 15,7 in). PROVENIENZ: Privatsammlung Bayern. Oil on canvas. Signed in upper right. 27.5 x 40 cm (10.8 x 15.7 in). PROVENANCE: Private collection Bavaria. Julius II Anton Adam was born into a highly respected family of artists in Munich, the son of the lithographer and photographer Julius (I) Adam and the grandson of the horse painter Albrecht Adam. Until 1882, Adam devoted himself mainly to genre painting and made works that were clearly distinguishable from the animal depictions typical of the Adams family. In the mid-1880s, however, a cat picture he had made was so well received at the Munich Kunstverein, that he decided to paint nothing but cats from then on. Using a precise, fine-painting technique, he combined light and color observations of the soft fur with exact observations of their movements. Eventually, the artist became known as 'Cat Raphael' or 'Cat Adam'. In trying to get the attention of buyers, establishing an unmistakable brand nothing less than a necessary marketing strategy. Several of his paintings were awarded the gold medal at the International Art Exhibition in Munich, which earned him an important position among the Munich animal painters of the Wilhelminian period. [KT] Called up: June 10, 2023 - ca. 18.00 h +/- 20 min. This lot can be purchased subject to differential or regular taxation.

Templum Fine Art Auctions is pleased to present the best Guatemalan colonial sculptural group to be offered at auction in the recent years. From an important Spanish family private collection, Northern Spain. Sculptural group in polychrome wood with exquisite details, quality and original polychromy work on the face and mantles. Crystal eyes. Measurements: 47 x 62 x 27 cm. Archangel Raphael is the angel who healed Patriarch Tobias, which is why he is the "patron saint" of the war sick and maimed. In some countries he is considered the Patron of doctors. Saint Raphael is one of the three archangels known by name within the Christian, Jewish, and Muslim tradition along with Michael and Gabriel. Archangel Rafael represents the healing and purification of the soul and body. It guides the human being to leave behind all the negative that has accumulated throughout his life and to accept "God's healing", as its name indicates. Intercede and advocate so that human beings can free themselves from their past and resume the path of life with a new vision of the future full of hope and regeneration. San Rafael helps the sick in their transition to a new life full of opportunities for spiritual growth. For those people whose path on Earth has come to an end, it gives the opportunity for the healing and purification of the soul in its new stage of existence. San Rafael Arcángel is celebrated on October 24. Reference bibliography: VV.AA.; Ramos Sosa, Rafael (2013). «Sculptors and sculptures in the former Captaincy General of Guatemala (1524 – 1660)».
