Lot 574

De Mora (D[on]. Gonzalo". Literatur: Ausst.-Kat. Exposición de retratos de niño en España. Catálogo general ilustrado. Madrid, Sociedad Española de Amigos del Arte, Mai - Juni 1925, Tafel XXXIII (als "Carnicero [?]"). Provenienz: Laut Angaben des Vorbesitzers aus spanischem Adelbesitz erworben. Antonio Carnicero1748 Salamanca - 1814 Madrid(attributed to) Portrait of a boy with a canary(Francisco de Paula Antonio de Borbón, Duque de Cádiz ?). Oil on canvas. 115 x 77.5 cm. Relined. Restored. Minor damage to frame. Provenance: according to the information given by the previous owner, acquired from Spanish nobility Literature: exhibition catalogue Exposición de retratos de niño en España. Catálogo general ilustrado. Madrid, Sociedad Española de Amigos del Arte, May - June 1925, plate XXXIII (as "Carnicero [?]").

Lot 180

17th CENTURY, AFTER RAPHAELMassacre of the innocentsoil on copper59 x 92cmRaphael's rendition of the Massacre of the Innocents is rather unusual when compared to the larger body of work by the Renaissance master, renowned for his harmony and balance. The Massacre of the Innocents contradicts this by being a highly active topic, in which Roman soldiers are seen slaughtering the newborns of Bethlehem. This early rendition, however, would come to inspire several other important renditions of the subject, such as the ones of Tintoretto and Rubens.Condition report: There is some unevenness to the surface. There are areas of loss to the paint surface apparent in the illustration. The surface is covered with a layer of dirt and discoloured varnish making any reading under UV light difficult.

Vito Timmel (Austrian, 1886-1949)Winter landscape signed and dated 'Timmel/XXVII-XII-XXVI.' (lower left)oil on canvas64 x 64cm (25 3/16 x 25 3/16in).Footnotes:ProvenancePrivate collection, Greece.ExhibitedPossibly Trieste, Padiglione Municipale del Giardino Pubblico, II Esposizione Sindacale di Belle Arti, as 'Paesaggio invernale'.LiteraturePossibly Silvio Benco, 'La mostra regionale d 'arte al Giardino . Le opere degli scultori', Il Piccolo, Trieste, 18 October 1928, as 'Paesaggio invernale'.Vito Timmel (born Vittorio von Thümmel) was born in Vienna in 1886. He was the son of a German aristocrat, Raphael von Thümmel and an Italian Countess, Adele Scodellari. In 1890 the family relocated to Trieste where later Vito studied under the artist Eugenio Scomparini. In 1905 Timmel enrolled in the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna which pushed his oeuvre and production towards symbolism and Art Nouveau styles. After the First World War, when he fought for the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Timmel returned to Trieste. Then a very intense and creative period started for the artist. Unfortunately however, his health began to suffer and deteriorated to the point that he had to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital in 1946, where he passed away in 1949.The present work was painted at the height of the artist's career and encapsulates all the qualities that made Timmel famous: a subject charged with mystical connotations, a bold symbolist style and a captivating narrative. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 60

A Continental patinated bronze Biblical relief plaque of Noah Leaving the Ark, after Raphael, possibly 17th century, with the figures standing before the large vessel beyond and with descending pairs of animals, 45.5 x 36 cmThe present relief takes after a scene in Raphael's Loggia in the Apostolic Palace, in the Vatican. During the 17th century, the composition was reproduced in engravings including by Cornelis Visscher in Northern Europe (note for example Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, 1963.30.37060). It is likely that the present plaque, which is possibly Flemish in origin, is derived from such a source.  Condition Report: Patina mid brown, with lighter sections to the raised parts and minor patches of verdigris oxidisation to edges, more so to reverse where there are also areas of light wash possibly result of previous mounting. Minor nicks and losses to sides, some possibly result of previous drilling/mounting. Some flattening to Noah's nose and some surface dappling (likely due to casting) to the upper backs of lowermost animals. The plaque is slightly bent. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition Condition Report Disclaimer

He briefly taught other Army artists the skill of panoramic reconnaissance drawing, but served most of his time on the Western Front until the close of the war.
