Female figures from the frescoes at the Villa of Cicero, Pompeii: Allegory of Autumn and a ' Danzatrice ' water and bodycolour over an etched line on paper with margins drawn in colour (2) 47.3 x 36.8cm; 46.5 x 36cmFootnote: Michelangelo Maestri is mainly known for his bodycolours that he based on the then only recently discovered wall frescos in Pompeii. The drawings, which are often over etched outlines became very popular amongst travellers on their Grand Tour. Besides Roman frescos, the artist also drew inspiration from Renaissance artists such as Giulio Romano (c.1499-1546) and Raphael (1483-1520). The first of the works in the present lot is from the series of Seasons, based on the frescoes in the triclinium of the Villa of Cicero in Pompeii discovered on 25th May 1748 (now at the Archaeological Museum of Naples, inv. 9295). The second is from the fragments of a fresco of seven flying female figures found in the villa on 18th January 1749 (inv. 9297). CONDITION:Discolouration and toning to the margins. Slight staining along the edges. Slight mildew to the surface. The figures painted over printed base. On laid paper. Both unframed. Old paper hinges.
The Entombment of Christ oil on panel, in a feigned stone oval cartouche 27 x 20.5cmFootnote: The present painting derives from a composition by von Aachen known principally from the print by Raphael Sadeler after the original in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich. Several versions of the composition are known, both in oil and on other supports and most, including one on vellum sold at Sotheby's on 4th of July 2007, lot 194, include in the foreground a female figure seen from behind, which is to be seen in the Sadeler print, though absent here. Another derivative in oil, also in the Munich Alte Pinakothek, is without the foreground female figure as is the case in the present painting.Condition report: 17 / 09 / ??, lot 62 marked to the reverse Oil on panel. The panel is very thin, formed from a single board in vertical orientation is has a slight warp which is accommodated by the frame. The paint layers have a network of cracks which are raised and vulnerable in areas. There are small scattered losses and some slight pitting in the foreground. There are some localised areas of retouching covering small losses and cracks, well matched to the original. The varnish is clear, even and semi-glossy. The frame is in a good condition but the panel is not adequately supported, being held on the reverse with clips, possibly being restrained, leading to the raised paint.
