Rare mid 18th century engraved copper plate depicting an area of Clerkenwell - New River Head, believed to be a plan for water works, stamped 'C. Johnson' to rear, 22 x 24cm. NB: By family decent from an engineer at the Water Board. The present plate is believed to relate to the River Head project, the first large scale public water supply project, it has been set established that the plate may date to between 1730 (when the waste pond embankments and cistern house were built - present on this plate) and 1743 (a contemporary print shows more development at Sadlers Wells and Cow Layer).

Being born in France to British parents he was an English citizen but obtained French nationality in 1872. He was a prominent philatelist and published a book on the subject.
