Lot 9

An exceptionally rare Dutch engraved façon de Venise wine glass, circa 1660-70The round funnel bowl finely wheel-engraved with a continuous landscape scene, one side with a winged Cupid taming a bridled lion, holding a bow and arrow in one hand, the other with Cupid riding on the back of an eagle in flight, holding an open book in one hand and an olive branch in the other, three baying hounds beneath, two lovebirds in an olive tree to one side, a single bird perched in a tree to the other, the stem formed from a pair of tightly coiled ropes, both containing spiralling threads in opaque white and translucent turquoise, the upper terminals applied with opposing aquamarine raspberry prunts, the conical foot further engraved with three floral sprigs, 16.1cm highFootnotes:ProvenanceChristie's sale, 7 June 1988, lot 273Private British CollectionThe scenes on this glass are taken from the Ambacht van Cupido (The Trade of Cupid) in Nederduytsche Poemata by Daniël Heinsius, first published in 1616 and reprinted several times. Cupid flying on the back of an Eagle is after emblem 23, 'Amor eruditus' (Learned love). Cupid taming the Lion is after emblem 24, 'Omnia vincit Amor' (Love conquers all). Heinsius pioneered the use of the Dutch language for poetry. 'Omnia vincit Amor' was first published as emblem 1 in Heinsius' Quaeris quid sit amor? in circa 1601, which was the very first love emblem book ever written in Dutch. The glass itself belongs to a small group of engraved glasses which originated in the Southern Netherlands in the mid-17th century, influenced by Nuremburg decoration, see Pieter C Ritsema van Eck, 'Early Wheel Engraving in the Netherlands', Journal of Glass Studies, vol.26 (1984), pp.86-101 for a discussion. Several glasses engraved in similar style have related serpent stems terminating in two 'heads', which are characteristic of the Southern Netherlands, see pp.98-102, figs.35-7, 41 and 45. Unlike glasses decorated in the Northern Netherlands, these typically have wreaths engraved around the feet, of which floral sprigs on the foot of the present glass would appear to be a variant. A goblet and cover with related decoration, bearing a portrait of Charles II of Spain and two putti executed in very similar style, was sold by Bonhams on 20 November 2019, lot 7. Compare also to the goblet and cover from the Mühleib Collection sold by Bonhams on 2 May 2013, lot 52. A glass of very similar form excavated from Afferden, Limburg, in the Netherlands, but without engraved decoration is in Limburgs Museum (inv. no.L02776).For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

April). - Die Litanei u. a. mit Desiderius, Gregor, Robert, Urban und Maria von Ägypten. - Marienoffizium und Totenoffizium nach Gebrauch von Langres. - Obsecro te in weiblicher Form 'michi famula tua'. - KOLLATION: 114 Bll. (das erste und 25. weiß). - Blattgröße ca. 17,5 : 12,5 cm. Schriftspiegel ca. 10 : 7,5 cm. 17 Zeilen, regliert. Textura, geschrieben in dunkelbrauner Tinte, Hervorhebungen in Rot. - PROVENIENZ: Europäische Privatsammlung. Jan Huygen van Linschoten Navigatio ac itinerarium in orientalem sive lusitanorum Indiam .. - Descriptio totius Guineae tractus, Congi, Angolae, et Monomotapae. 2 Teile in 1 Band. 'This inestimable book, a treasure of all the knowledge and learning relating to the East- and West-Indies and the navigation thither, at end of the 16th century, has been in the highest esteem for nearly a century, and was given to each ship sailing to India, as log-book. Hence the many editions .. This Latin edition is very rare, even in Holland' (Muller, America). 'During his time in India, Jan Huyghen travelled throughout the Malabar and Coromandel coastel regions and in his spare time compiled a secret dossier on the eastern sea routes which he subsequently smuggled back to Europe' (Howgego). The engraver, Hernando de Solis, chose to use the earlier Ortelius version of 1570 with the peculiar bulge to the south-western coastline of South America .. 1999 BMW 840Ci Sport Individual to Alpina Specification Transmission: automaticMileage:117261When the Klaus Kapitza designed 8 Series was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1989, it felt like a glimpse into the future with its angular styling. The 8 Series was offered in 840 and 850 form and, when introduced in mid-1993, it was fitted with a four litre, V8 engine mated to either a five-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. Producing a very healthy 282bhp, this version could achieve the 0-62mph sprint in an impressive 6.9 seconds; importantly with the naturally aspirated V8, acceleration was effortless and refined. From mid-1995, production phased in the newer 4.4 litre M62B44 engine, which had better fuel economy and more torque, though power output remained unchanged.Offered here is a superb looking 840ci Sport that has been fitted with various Alpina upgrades and is presented in very rare Violet Blue coachwork. Fitted with a Parrot phone system and a sports exhaust, the vendor reports that this BMW runs and drives very well indeed and sounds fantastic when on song. The coachwork and interior both present well showing little sign of age and the wheels are well with no major scuffs or blemishes. Accompanying this BMW is a history file which includes various old MoT test certificates, the original BMW service book with continuous stamps, sundry invoices and the current UK V5C registration document.BMW 8 Series are certainly becoming a more appreciated modern classic and this example with its desirable BMW ‘Individual’ interior will be quite sought after. What better way to enjoy driving than in this elegant looking pillarless coupé.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. 1995 Ferrari F355 Spider Transmission: manualMileage:41897Manufactured from May 1994 to 1999, the Ferrari F355 was an evolution of the Ferrari 348. It is a mid-engined, rear wheel drive, V8 powered two seat coupé. At launch, two models were available; the coupé Berlinetta and the Targa topped GTS. The Spider (convertible) version was introduced in 1995. One major difference between the longitudinal V8 in the 348 and that in the 355, apart from the displacement increase from 3.4 to 3.5 litres, is that the F355 features a five valve per cylinder head that is considerably more powerful, producing 375bhp. The nomenclature does not follow the formula from the previous decades, i.e. engine capacity plus cylinder number for example, the Ferrari 308 name comes from three litres plus eight cylinders, with the same for the 328, 348, 512 etc. This time, Ferrari used engine capacity plus number of valves per cylinder; proud to boast about this technological advancement, with the name 355 coming from 3.5 litres engine capacity and five valves per cylinder. The F355 has become the most popular model so far with over 11,273 cars produced. This lovely low mileage example presents very well and is finished in the rare coachwork of Swaters Blue complemented by its tan leather interior. The discerning will no doubt note that this has the desirable manual gearbox powered by the 3496cc V8 engine fitted with the Bosch Motronic fuel injection. Reassuringly at 40,073 miles, a cambelt service was carried out. This example is in very good order throughout having been imported from Newport, California at the beginning of 2018 by the current vendor. UK lights have been fitted to conform with UK regulations and the history file includes an original toolkit, service book with many Ferrari main dealer service stamps, and UK V5C registration document. This is a lovely looking Ferrari that will no doubt give a lucky new owner great pleasure and pride of ownership.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. 2008 Aston Martin DB9 Transmission: automaticMileage:50998The sleek superform aluminium body of the DB9 was initially designed by Ian Callum but had also been significantly influenced by the next director of AM design, Hendrik Fisker. It was powered by a third generation version of the now familiar 6.0 litre, V12 and has a top speed of 186mph. The DB9 was the first of what was to become a long line of production Aston Martins to use VH architecture; using superformed parts in the chassis and footwell as well as the body panels. The individual diecast, extruded or stamped aluminium elements of the VH platform are bonded with strong adhesives and self-piercing rivets to make a lightweight but stiff backbone. The DB9 bodyshell weighed 25% less than that of the DB7 but has double its torsional rigidity. This process also allowed Aston Martin to retain high levels of engineering accuracy in producing a car at a higher volume, ensuring chassis performance to match the engine power. Aston Martins have always made the interior of their cars to be very special places. The fine detail of finishing is typified by the starter button made of glass and sand etched with the Aston Martin wings logo.Originally registered on 9th September 2008, this DB9 is finished in rare Tempest Blue with Phantom Grey and Moonshadow leather interior with Piano Black dashboard. Fitted with cruise control and Bluetooth as an option. A well stamped service book accompanies this Aston Martin with the last service in November of this year with a main dealer. This DB9 is supplied with a V5C registration document and a full years MoT test certificate. This example will give any driver the buzz of Aston Martin pedigree alongside one of the most iconic sounds of any modern car with the glorious V12 engine. Attractively priced and fabulous value for money, this is the opportunity to own a superbly built British sports car without the concern of depreciation and in a car that looks equally as good today as it did in 2008.*Interested parties should note that the private plate for this vehicle will be retained and the DVLA will provide an age-related plate (we believe the original which is RX58 EXO)Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. 1999 Mercedes-Benz SL320 Transmission: manualMileage:90000Unveiled at the March 1989 Geneva Motor Show, the new Mercedes-Benz R129 Series SL range was beautifully engineered. Based around a two-door monocoque bodyshell, its sophisticated, all-round independent suspension (double-wishbone front/five-link rear) was augmented by a host of active and passive safety features including electronic stability control, ventilated ABS disc brakes, adaptive-damping shock absorbers, front airbags and an integral rollover bar that deployed in less than a third of a second if the car ever sensed an impending flip. Suitably cosseting, the convertible's impeccably built cabin consisted of a fully automated power hood and featured such advancements as memory seats, electric windows/mirrors and an adjustable steering column. Yet lurking beneath all the luxury and refinement was a performance orientated sports car. This lovely example is presented in metallic Azurite Blue with blue Nappa leather interior. It comes with electric adjustable memory front seats, Becker radio, electric hood (blue) and factory hardtop. This car also comes with a good service history which has mainly been carried out by Mercedes-Benz main dealerships, with only a couple of specialists stamps in the service book, which is rare and reassuring. These models are highly desirable and with only 90,000 miles showing on the odometer and presented in good condition throughout, this example surely is a great investment.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Buyers are advised to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out this service. Historics will not entertain disputes over descriptions.

1983 Porsche 911 SC Cabriolet (3.0 litre) Transmission: manualMileage:8896The Porsche 911 is a luxury two-door sports coupé with a distinctive design, rear engine and independent rear suspension; an evolution of the swing axle on the Porsche 356. It has undergone continuous development although the basic concept has remained little changed. Throughout its lifetime, the 911 has been modified by private teams and by the factory itself for racing, rallying and other forms of automotive competition and is among the most successful competition cars ever. In the mid-1970s, normally aspirated 911 Carrera RSRs won major world championship sports car races such as Targa Florio, Daytona, Sebring and Nürburgring, even against prototypes. The 911-derived 935 Turbo also won the coveted 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979. In the 1999 international poll for the award of Car of the Century, the 911 came fifth. It is one of two in the top five that had remained continuously in production (the original Beetle remained in production until 2003) and was until 1998, the most successful surviving application of the air cooled, horizontally opposed rear-engine layout. This superb right hand drive 1983 Porsche 911 SC Cabriolet was supplied new to the Sultan of Brunei in Malaysia and is believed to have only covered 8,896 miles from new. It is thought the Sultan gave this Porsche to one of his staff and while in Malaysia the colour was changed to red. Imported to the UK in 2019, the new owner set about returning the car to its original specification, this included removing all the panels and repainting the car back to its original colour of white, refreshing the black leather interior, refurbishing the wheels and fitting new tyres. For the mechanics, it was sent to Caversham Porsche where it was serviced, new oil cooler pipes fitted, new exhaust system and the air conditioning serviced. The service book is stamped with its first service in Malaysia and the recent service here in the UK. This Porsche is supplied with a V5 registration document, the original service book and the invoices for the work carried out in the UK. Recently the rear seats have been retrimmed, new seat belts and a new battery fitted. The engine has been professionally tuned and the 2994cc engine sounds great when on song with performance to match. This rare and well sorted cabriolet is ready to be used and enjoyed immediately, it would be difficult to find one with lower mileage and in such stunning condition.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Buyers are advised to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out this service. Historics will not entertain disputes over descriptions.

Lot 182

Medieval English manuscript. Illuminated folding almanac on vellum, southern England, c.1425. In Latin, written in a small legible bookhand in brown and red ink on 6 vellum leaves (folded dimensions approx. 135 x 40 mm, each except perhaps f. 5 opening ideally into six panels, dimensions when opened 270 x 120 mm), ruled in brown ink, prick-marks in margins, all leaves stitched together at foot and attached to alum-tawed leather thong, retaining but detached from original silk-lined leather covering (probably deerskin), a few small holes, mainly to intersections of folds.Contents and illumination:ff. 1-3: calendar of saints' days for March-September (i.e. only half of f.1 extant, lacking the half with January-February on flesh and hair sides respectively, leaf for October-December not present), divided into columns showing times of sunrise and sunset, sun's position in the Zodiac, Dominical letters for days of the week, and saints' days and festivals, illustrated with a total of 7 illuminated initials in gold on red and blue ground (20 x 15 mm; one for each month extant), one panel of each leaf with headings in red or brown ink incorporating decorative initials in blue amid penwork surrounds in red,ff. 4-5: tables of solar and lunar eclipses, with 64 diagrams in red, blue and gold (each approx. 16 mm in diameter), one panel of each leaf with headings as above,f. 6: large illuminated miniature of the Zodiac man (image rubbed and marked, leaf retaining only two panels apparently of six, but with only minor loss of image, the three missing upper panels presumably containing text only) (qty: 1)Provenance: available on request.Footnote: An extremely rare survival, one of perhaps 30 examples of an English folding almanac known to be extant, nearly all of which are confined to major institutional collections; intended for practical use by physicians, who used astrological calculations to establish prognoses and the most auspicious timings for medical interventions, their form allowed them to be suspended from the waist for quick reference, hence the alternative name of 'girdle book'.'From an analysis of the saints' days and festivals it would appear that [the present] calendar was made for use in the Canterbury diocese (thus confirming the south England emphasis of the astronomical calculations' e.g. St Augustine of Canterbury, in red, on 26th May, the Translation of the relics of St Thomas on 7th July, St David 1st March, St Chad, 2nd March (both of whose feasts were made obligatory in 1398), St Dunstan, on 19th May, St John of Beverley on 7th March [sic: really 7th May], and other English saints' (J. P. Harthan, Assistant Keeper of the Library, Victoria & Albert Museum, typescript description, 1960, provided with the lot).'Folded almanacs must have been common in later medieval England; however, few still exist, because of their small size and the wear and tear caused by folding and unfolding them. Most of those that do survive seem to have been intended for physicians, yet others seem to have been produced for less sophisticated users ... Astrology had a vital role in medieval medicine, because an understanding of the stars was believed to be essential to determine the best timing for various medical procedures' (Pamela Robinson, 'A "very curious Almanack": the gift of Sir Robert Moray FRS, 1668', Notes and Records of the Royal Society (2008), Vol. 62, pp. 301-314).Further reading: Cornelius O'Boyle, 'Astrology and Medicine in Later Medieval England: The Calendars of John Somer and Nicholas of Lynn', Sudhoffs Archiv 2005), Vol. 89, No. 1, pp. 1–22; C. H. Talbot, 'A Mediaeval Physician's Vade Mecum', Journal of the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences, Vol. 16, No. 3 (July, 1961), pp. 213-233.Condition report: It appears that the manuscript is lacking:Half the first leaf of the calendar (i.e. three panels, containing January-February)The entire fourth leaf (containing October-December)Four of six panels from the final leaf (Zodiac man)The fifth leaf (showing lunar eclipses) is in three panels only but it is unclear what if anything is absent.

Lot 199

Wheatley (Dennis, 1897-1977). Collection of signed letters to Eileen Cond, 1933-71. 31 in total, of which 19 autograph, the rest typed, all signed ‘Dennis’ or ‘Dennis Wheatley’, all on his personalised stationery, various extents (1-4 pp.), a handful of letters with rust-marks from paperclips, overall in very good condition (qty: 31)Footnote: A group of warm and candid letters to eccentric autograph collector and hotelier Eileen Cond (1911-1984), dating back to the very beginning of Wheatley’s career. He provides detailed updates on the progress, publication and sales of his books and novels, and freely imparts his opinions on their relative merits: ‘I am glad to say that “Such Power is Dangerous” has already gone into it’s [sic] 3rd impression and generally speaking the reviews have been most kind. Personally I do not like it as much “The Forbidden Territory” but there is plenty of excitement in it and some people seem to like it better' (June 1933); ‘I am particularly attached to “Old Rowley” because it is a book that I have wanted to write all my life, but “Black August” is by far the most ambitious thing which I have attempted yet’ (January 1934). Of particular interest is a splenetic four-page critique of the screen version of The Forbidden Territory, which Wheatley believed to have been bowdlerised to avoid upsetting Russia, newly acceded to the League of Nations (December 1934). A great bibliophile himself, Wheatley also muses on book collecting and the future value of his own works: ‘[The Forbidden Factory] may possibly be of some interest by the time you are an old lady of eighty – just because it is a first edition of a first book – and in this particular instance […] half the number were issued without the map and the bulk of the remainder went to the libraries where they will be battered out of recognition. If it does therefore ever become of any interest copies in mint state will be very rare indeed’ (April 1933).

Jonson (Ben) [The Workes], first collected edition, lacks initial blank and engraved title, lacks all after 3S4 (ie complete up to the end of Catiline), repair to inner margin of first 2 preliminary leaves and to upper corner of llast several leaves, affecting pagination and rules at top on only last few leaves, some water-staining and damp-mottling, sometimes heavy, 18th century panelled calf, rebacked and corners repaired, by William Stansby, 1616; another copy, lacking all before B1, 4A1-2 (from The Forrest in Epigrammes) and final leaf 4Q4, with G1 (woodcut title to Every Man out of his Humour) misbound at beginning of book,a few early ink names and annotations, 2M4 torn, some soiling, later panelled calf, worn, by William Stansby, 1616; and a few other extracts and leaves from other copies of the same work, plus part of part of Masques from a later edition, and 2 reference works, folio and 8vo (8)⁂ These two partially defective copies together make up one almost complete copy of what, after Shakespeare's first folio, might be considered the single most important 17th century English dramatical work. One of the fragments also includes the missing leaves from the Epigrammes (4A1-2), therefore in essence the lot is missing only the engraved title and the final leaf, given that the initial blank is so rare as to be almost unfindable. The two copies also show different variants of some pages, notably p.406 the two readings "the readie sword" and "the facile sword"; and p.413 "By Castor" and "By Pollux" altered to "By Pollux" and "By Hercules" with an additional line inserted "That would I more...". The first copy also bears an intriguing inscription in ink to the title of Every Man in his Humour, in a hand deliberately made to look old "To Worthy friend Mr Will. Shakespeare of Ben Jonson". The find of the century were it genuine!
