CONRAD JOSEPH: (1857-1924) Polish-British novelist. A good, large vintage signed and inscribed sepia 11 x 14 photograph, the striking image showing the well-dressed Conrad, wearing a bowler hat, standing outdoors in a half-length pose. Signed in brown fountain pen ink to the lower border, 'For W. McFee in the fellowship of the sea and in bondage to scribbling, always his, Joseph Conrad'. Signed photographs by Conrad of this size are rare, and the present example provides an interesting association. Some creasing and small areas of paper loss to the borders, and with some light staining, GWilliam McFee (1881-1966) English writer of sea stories who wrote the introduction to A Conrad Argosy (1942) and also authored Joseph Conrad: Tales of Land and Sea (1953).

PYNCHON THOMAS: (1937- ) American novelist. An extremely rare book signed and inscribed, being a soft cover edition of The Secret Integration, First Edition published by Aloes Books, London, 1980, one of a limited edition of 2,500 copies, with a cover collage and frontispiece illustration by Joe Tilson. Signed and inscribed by Pynchon ('For Irving - Thomas Pynchon') to the inside front cover. Some very minimal, light age wear and a few minor stains to the back cover, otherwise VG
ANDERSEN HANS CHRISTIAN: (1805-1875) Danish author, best remembered for his literary fairy tales. A fine pair of autograph fair copy manuscript verses signed ('H. C. Andersen') by Andersen, one page, large oblong 4to (approximately 13 x 10.5”, 32.5 x 26 cm), Paris, 26th April 1943, in Danish and French. To the left side of the page Andersen has penned his verse Soldaten ('The Soldier') in Danish, the four-verse work of four lines each, part of a song cycle, commencing 'Med daempede Hvirvler Trommerne gaae/ Ak, skal vi da aldrig til Stedet naae/ At hank an faae Ro i sin Kiste!/ Jeg troer mit Hjerte vil briste' (Translation: 'Our steps keep time with the muffled drum/ How slow it seems, and how long the march/ O, that he was at peace and everything done/ My heart is pounding'). To the right side of the page the author has penned a French translation of his verse, headed Le Soldat ecrite d'Andersen. Signed and dated by Andersen at the foot of the page. Manuscript verses by Andersen are extremely rare and highly sought after, and the present example is particularly charming. Some light staining and a few small, minor tears to the edges and with a vertical fold to the centre with neat splitting to the upper and lower edges and the whole reinforced with a thin strip of light tape to the verso. GHans Christian Andersen visited Paris on eight occasions during his lifetime and it was his second visit in 1843 (during which time he penned the present verses) that was perhaps the most important to him personally as he purposefully made it his ambition to meet French writers and artists, and thus succeeded in being accepted into the Parisian literary community. It is more than likely that the present verses were written at the request of one such member of the literary circles in Paris; we know that Andersen penned two similar verses on the same day, 26th April 1943, in the album amicorum of the poet and Romanticist Alfred de Vigny (1797-1863) and his wife Lydia.
KRYSINSKA MARIE: (1857-1908) Polish-French Poet, Novelist and Musician. An active member of the Parisian creative and literary circles, including the "Jemenfoutistes", "Hirsutes" or "Zutistes" of which she was the only female member. Rare A.L.S., `Marie Krysinska´, two pages, 8vo, Paris, n.d., in French. Krysinska invites her correspondent to the premiere of a performance she is leading, stating `Combien je vous serais reconnaissante cher Maitre de la bonté que vous auriez d´honorer de votre presence ma petite première de Kaïn lundi à 4h1/2 à la Boudinière´ (Translation: `How grateful I would be to you, dear Master, for the kindness that you would have if you honour with your presence my little premiere of Kain on Monday at 4:30 at La Boudinière´), and very interestingly further explains the reasons and goals of the spectacle, stating `Il y a dans notre spectacle d´Ombre, de la part de trois artistes sincères: Georges Bellenger, peintre, G. Street, musician et moi, une tentative de novateurs et notre plus cher désir est d´exposer notre effort aux yeux des plus hautains et des plus glorieux esthéticiens et écrivains…´ (Translation: `There is in our shadow show, performed by three sincere artists: Georges Bellenger, painter, G. Street, musician and me, an attempt of innovators and our dearest desire is to expose our effort to the eyes of the most haughty and of the most glorious aestheticians and writers…´) Small overall minor age wear, otherwise G Although conventionally the innovation of free poetry is attributed to other 19th century French poets, such as Gustave Khan or Jules Laforgue, it has to be noted that Marie Krysinska published free verse poetry in 1882, five years before other volumes featuring free verse poetry would appear in 1887, giving Krysinska an authentic claim to the title of "Innovator of free verse"
MALLARME STEPHANE: (1842-1898) French symbolist poet. A good A.L.S., Stephane Mallarme, to two sides of a plain correspondence card, Fontainebleau, 17th October n.y., to [Henri Antoine Jules-] Bois, in French. Mallarme writes a charming letter, in part, 'Que je suis en retard; mais vous etes de ceux qui savez, et la conviction d'avoir charme un silencieux ne vous fait par defaut. Jusqu'a quel point: je ne veux, cependant, quitter la campagne ou vos livres ont ete souvent dans mes mains, sans vous le dire en toute verite. L'Eternelle Poupee est un superbe cri, avec tout son accompagnement fastueux spirituel et vous y parutes a jamais un maitre et original ecrivain de prose. La Porte Heroique du Ciel, un de ces drames qui sont leur popre musique si rare, riche, significative....' (Translation: 'That I'm late; but you are one of those who know, and the conviction of having charmed a silent person does not fail you. To what extent: I do not want, however, to leave the countryside where your books have often been in my hands, without telling you the complete truth. L'Eternelle Poupee is a superb exclamation, with all its sumptuous spiritual accompaniment, and you appeared there forever as a master and original writer of prose. La Porte Heroique du Ciel, one of those dramas which are their own music so rare, rich, significant…..'). A letter of good content and association. The card is a little brittle, with one crease and a long tear to the base, slightly affecting the text, and with one corner missing resulting in the loss of a couple of words. G Henri Antoine Jules-Bois (1868-1943) French writer, scholar and mystic who took an interest in the occult. Jules-Bois's early works were symbolic plays in verse, followed by several novels in the 1890s centred on women's emancipation, including L'Eternelle Poupee ('The Eternal Doll').
MAHFOUZ NAGUIB: (1911-2006) Egyptian writer, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1988. A rare A.L.S., one page, folio, n.p. (Egypt), 2nd May 1988, to Philippe Vigreux, in Egyptian Arabic. The untranslated letter, penned in bold red ink on feint ruled notepaper was written by Mahfouz to his French translator. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Mahfouz to Vigreux in Paris. About EX
PROKHOROV ALEXANDER: (1916-2002) Australian-born Russian physicist, recognised for his pioneering research on lasers. Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1964. Autograph statement signed, A. Prokhorov, in Cyrillic, one page, 8vo, n.p. (Moscow), n.d. (1960s). The head of the page is titled Maxims of Life in the hand of a collector and immediately beneath Prokhorov writes, in full, 'Conferences help not only to understand the laws of nature, but also to establish mutual understanding between nations'. With several ink annotations to the lower left area of the page. Rare. VG
‘The only thing missing to our happiness is that when we ask for coffee we get a tiny little cup with a microscopic piece of sugar’ JOLIOT-CURIE IRENE: (1897-1956) French chemist and physicist, the elder daughter of Pierre and Marie Curie. Joliot-Curie was jointly awarded, with her husband, Frederic Joliot-Curie, the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1935. A rare A.L.S., Irene Joliot Curie, two pages, 8vo, n.p., 26th January 1946, to a lady, in French. Joliot-Curie expresses her pleasure that Anne had found a belt pretty and asks her correspondent to thank her for the little photographs that she had sent, continuing to add that they are enjoying their stay in Arosa ('C'est un endroit merveilleux pour le ski') (Translation: 'It is a wonderful place for skiing'), commenting that there are more hotels and people in the town than she would like, although remarking that the Bellevue hotel is very comfortable and the food very good, as well as the excellent milk she drinks which must be beneficial to her health. Joliot-Curie further writes of her son, 'Je pense que nous allons mons decider a mettre Pierre a Gstaad, car tout nous sera tres facilite par les amis de Mr. Victor Henri qui ont un chalet la-bas. Je m'excuse de vous avoir donne aussi du tracas pour prendre des informations pour cet encombrant personnage nomme Pierre. Envoyez moi tout de meme les informations, car si jamais il y avait quelque chose qui n'allait pas les amis de M. Victor Henri pourraient surement arranger un changement.....' (Translation: 'I think that we are going to decide to put Pierre in Gstaad, because everything will be very well facilitated by the friends of Mr. Victor Henri who has a chalet there. I apologise for having also given you the hassle of getting information for this cumbersome character named Pierre. Send me the information all the same, because if ever there was something wrong the friends of Mr, Victor Henri could surely arrange a change…..'). In a lengthy postscript Joliot-Curie makes a further observation and request, 'La seule chose qui manque a notre bonheur, c'est que quand on demande du cafe on a minuscule petite tasse avec un microscopique morceau de sucre. Si vous pouviez, sans que cela vous d'erange trop, nous envoyer des tickets permettant d'acheter une boite de nesscafe nous le chaufferions chez nous sur un rechand metal et ce serait bien agreable. NICOLLE CHARLES: (1866-1936) French bacteriologist, Nobel Prize winner for Physiology or Medicine, 1928. Manuscript D.S., C Nicolle, one page, oblong 8vo, Tunis, 16th December 1930, in French. Nicolle responds to a researcher's questionnaire entitled Enquete Mondiale ('World Enquiry') at the head, with the researcher's manuscript questions beneath, '1. Vos debuts litteraires furent-il heureux ou difficiles? 2. Des moyens d'existence (un second metier ou une fortune personelle) vous permirent-ils de vous faire un nom dans les lettres ou ne vecutes-vous que de votre plume? 3. Quel ouvrage vous fit-il le plus connaitre? Lequel considerez-vous comme votre chef d'oeuvre?' (Translation: '1. Were your literary debuts happy or difficult? 2. Did the means of existence (a second job or a personal fortune) allow you to make a name for yourself in letters, or do you only live from your pen? 3. What book did you know the most about? Which do you consider your masterpiece?). Nicolle provides his brief answers beneath, in full, '1. Je ne saurais dire. 2. etant surtout un homme de sciences. 3. DOLOMIEU DEODAT GRATET DE: (1750-1801) French geologist after whom the mineral and the rock dolomite were named. A supporter of Napoleon Bonaparte during the French Revolution, Dolomieu was captured and held as a prisoner of war in Italy from 1799. Following Napoleon's successful invasion of Italy, one of the terms dictated by him in the peace treaty of Florence in March 1801 was the immediate release of Dolomieu. An extremely rare autograph manuscript signed, with his initials G D D, two pages, 12mo (6.5 x 9.5 cm), n.p., n.d., in French. Dolomieu's manuscript notes, comprising thirty-seven lines written in a small, although perfectly legible, hand is entitled 'Les Erreurs reconnues sont des verites acquises' (Translation: 'The errors recognised are the truths acquired') and states, in part, 'et leur decouverte est d'autant plus utile qu'elles ont été de nature à séduire beaucoup de gens. Les erreurs vécues empechent l'esprit de s'occuper de nouvelles recherches: on croit savoir et c'est le plus grand obstacle a savoir reellement…….La verite recherchee par les hommes est comme le feu qu'ils produisent avec des matieres combustibles; plus elle s'etend, plus elle a de tendance a s'etendre de nouveau. On fait un pas vers la decouverte de la cause d'un phenomene quelconque lorsque l'on trouve que les causes auxquelles on l´attribuait n'ont aucun rapport avec lui. Comme il n'y a point d'effets sans causes, lorsqu'on decouvre un plus grand nombre de faits qui, quoique contemporain d'un phenomene, n'ont point de rapports avec lui, on se rapproche de la connaissance de la cause qui pourra l'expliquer. Cette methode d'approche de la verite, qu'on peut dire negative et d'exclusion peut reussir finalement quoiqu'elle puisse etre longue. One takes a step toward discovering the cause of any phenomenon when one finds that the causes to which it was attributed have no connection with it. As there are no effects without causes, when we discover a greater number of facts which, although contemporaneous with a phenomenon, have no connection with it, we come closer to knowing the cause that can explain it. This method of approaching the truth, which can be said to be negative and of exclusion, can ultimately succeed, although it may take a long time. Some very light, minor foxing and age wear, otherwise VG The text of Dolomieu's manuscript originates from a scientific work published in 1778-79 by Jean-Andre Deluc (1727-1817) Swiss geologist, natural philosopher and meteorologist who devised measuring instruments. Deluc's father was a supporter of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Jean-Andre also wrote of conversations he had experienced with Voltaire and Rousseau in an essay on the General Principle of Mortality which he had published in 1798.
BUFFON COMTE DE: (1707-1788) Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon. French Naturalist and Mathematician. Widely regarded as the father of natural history in the 18th century, being one of the first to recognize ecological succession and animal evolution, although forced to recant his theories because they contradicted the Biblical narrative. Buffon was also at the head of the "Jardin du Roi", now called the "Jardin des plantes". A rare A.L.S., `Leclerc de Buffon´, signed twice,one page, 8vo, n.p., 12th & 19th March 1761, to Mr. Humbert, in French. The letter being a receipt of the payments he receives, which were due to him on different expiration dates, stating in part `J´ai reçu de mr. Humbert en trois billets.. la somme de sept mil sincent livres, tant pour le payement de 5000 l. échues au mois d´octobre dernier que a compte de celui de trois mille livres qui echoit au présent mois de mars pour les bois que je luy ai vendu…´ (Translation: `I received from Mr. Humbert... the sum of seven thousand five hundred pounds, both for the payment of 5000 l. due in the last month of October which on account for the three thousand pounds which payment expires in the present month of March, for the woods that I sold to him..´) The letter has been neatly inlaid. About G to VG Provenance: From the celebrated collection of Robert de Flers (1872-1927) French playwright, opera librettist and journalist. The manuscripts amassed by de Flers were dispersed in 2014 at an auction in Paris conducted by Beaussant Lefevre.
MONGE GASPARD: (1746-1818) Comte de Péluse. French Mathematician, widely regarded as the inventor of descriptive geometry and the father of differential geometry. Monge served as Minister of the Marine 1792-93 during the French Revolution. Key figure in the foundation of the Ecole Polytechnique. Rare L.S., `Monge´, one page, folio, Rome, 10th April 1798, to the Chief Tax and Finance Officer of Italy, in French. Monge, in his capacity as Commissioner of the Executive Directory and Envoy to Rome, states in part `L´arrêté que le Citoyen Haller a pris le 4 de ce mois relativement à la Citoyenne Braschi a besoin, Citoyen, d´être soumis à l´approbation de la commission, avant de recevoir son execution ; nous vous invitons en consequence à nous remettre toutes les pieces qui ont servi au Citoyen Haller pour l´instruction de cette affaire…´ ("The decree that Citizen Haller issued on the 4th of this month in relation to Citizen Braschi needs, Citizen, to be submitted to the approval of the commission, before receiving its execution; we therefore invite you to give us all the documents that were used by Citizen Haller for the investigation of this case…") With blank leaf, only showing the sender´s post `Les Commissaires du Directoire Exécutif´ ("The Commissioners of the Executive Directory") Some light overall age wear and small areas of paper loss (largely to the blank integral leaf), the bifolium neatly laid down to restoration paper of a good standard. About G From May 1796 to October 1797 Monge was in Italy with C.L. Berthollet and some artists to select the paintings and sculptures being levied from the Italians. While there he became friendly with Napoleon Bonaparte. Upon his return to France, he was appointed as the Director of the Ecole Polytechnique, but early in 1798 he was sent to Italy on a mission that ended in the establishment of the short-lived Roman republic.
SCOTT ROBERT FALCON: (1868-1912) British Antarctic explorer. A very fine, rare vintage signed sepia 7 x 10 photograph, the photogravure image depicting Scott standing in a half- length pose, c.1900. Photograph by J. Thomson of London and bearing his blind embossed Royal Warrant to the lower photographer's mount. Signed ('Con') by Scott with his family name in dark fountain pen ink to a light area of the image. KITCHENER HERBERT: (1850-1916) 1st Earl Kitchener. Irish-born British Field Marshal and colonial administrator. An extremely rare and highly unusual large vintage signed 21.5 x 16.5 sepia photograph by Kitchener and six of the seven members of his mission to Japan comprising Henry Rawlinson (1864-1925; 1st Baron Rawlinson, British General), William Lambton (1863-1936; British Major-General), Leopold Greville (1882-1928; Lord Brooke, 6th Earl of Warwick, British Brigadier General), Tsuneyoshi Murata (1838-1921; Japanese Major, inventor of the Murata rifle), Nagayuki Asano (1864-1947; Japanese head of the Asano clan which ruled over Hiroshima Domain) and Lieutenant Colonel Yoshida. The image, which also features Captain Oswald Fitzgerald (1875-1916; British military officer with the 18th Bengal Lancers and Kitchener's 'constant and inseparable companion' whom he appointed his aide-de-camp), depicts Kitchener and the other officers standing together in full-length poses, each wearing their uniforms and medals, in the grounds of the Shiba Palace, Tokyo, in November 1909. Photograph by Shibata of Tokyo. Signed by the six in dark fountain pen inks to a light area at the base of the image, some adding their ranks alongside their signatures. Some light age wear and a few minor stains and scuffs, most evident to the photographer's mount. About VG Kitchener served as Commander-in-Chief, India, from 1902-09 and had been promoted to the highest army rank of Field Marshal in September 1909. As part of a tour to Australia and New Zealand Kitchener visited China and Japan and it was at the latter that he and his staff were treated as official guests of the nation; a palace at Tokyo was set aside for their use, a ceremonial reception was accorded to them and an invitation to attend the Imperial Manoeuvres was pressed on them. It was on the occasion of the Imperial Grand Japanese Manoeuvres that the present photograph was taken.
LAWRENCE T. E.: (1888-1935) British army officer, archaeologist, diplomat and writer, renowned for his role in the Arab Revolt (1916-18) and the Sinai and Palestine Campaign (1915-18) against the Ottoman Empire during World War I. An excellent A.L.S., T E Shaw, one page, folio, Karachi, India, 5th January 1927, to an unidentified correspondent (although evidently a writer whom Lawrence held in some esteem). Lawrence announces, 'I have sworn a great oath never to use or countenance the use of the name "Lawrence", as referring to me, again, in public or private', continuing 'So that would settle the question of my introducing your book, I'm afraid' and explaining 'Of course I write, or rather I try to write, occasionally: unsigned articles, or articles signed by virgin names. They are worth two guineas a thousand words, which I am told is a better rate than usual. They cost me more than that, in trouble, even at my R.A.F. rate of 3/6 a day! And no publisher would be moved to publish your work, because it had an unknown man's introduction before it.' Shaw, however, offers his advice and a further clarification of his decision to his correspondent, 'But why should you think an introduction necessary?......Probably the right man will take what you have written on its merits, and that should be much more gratifying than to be helped. I did twice, in the old days, help people by introducing their books: but one, Richard Garnett, was dead, and that pardoned the offence. The other, Doughty, was a special case: I had been trying to persuade all London to reprint him, and at last one beginning-publisher said "I will, if you'll preface it" :- and what could I do? Doughty was very nice about it: but it felt like scratching one's name on Westminster Abbey. Introductions to publishers I will (and do) willingly give. Several people with good stuff have been helped by me into print. It's a matter of knowing the proper tradesmen. Have you tried Cape? He is enterprising, and the best producer of commercial books in London (for format). If you will send me a sample of your stuff I'll see that it reaches his reader (Edward Garnett, a critic of genius) with my opinion. I have no doubt that it's the right stuff: and it should be exactly right for the particular public. If Cape says "NO", I'd suggest Faber and Gwyer for second string: but Cape an easy first. Secker is too difficult: and the big men too staid'. A rare letter of fine content in which Lawrence affirms his desire for anonymity and proves himself to be a good guide in the intricacies behind the scenes of publishing. Some very light creasing and a few minor tape stains to the lower central area of the letter, only very minimally affecting a few words of text and part of the signature, otherwise about VGFollowing his legendary exploits in Arabia, Lawrence had become a household name by the early 1920s and enlisted in the Royal Air Force in August 1922 as an aircraftman under the name John Hume Ross. However, less than a year later, his identity was exposed, and he was forced out of the RAF in February 1923. Changing his name once again, to T. E. Shaw, he repeatedly petitioned to re-join the RAF and was finally readmitted in August 1925. Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom was published in December 1926 and the renewed publicity it brought resulted in his assignment to bases as Karachi, from where the present letter was written, and Miramshah in British India, where he remained until the end of 1928. Herbert Jonathan Cape (1879-1960) British publisher who founded the London publishing house of Jonathan Cape in 1921, remaining at the head of the firm until 1960. Cape established a reputation for high quality design and production and published a range of English-language authors including Robert Frost, Ian Fleming, James Joyce and T. E. Lawrence.Edward Garnett (1868-1937) English writer, critic and literary editor who was instrumental in the publication of D. H. Lawrence's Sons and Lovers. Edward Garnett was the son of Richard Garnett (1895-1906) English scholar, librarian, biographer and poet, who is also referenced in the present letter.
DANTON GEORGES: (1759-1794) Leading figure of the French Revolution and first President of the Committee of Public Safety. Danton voted for the death of Louis XVI in 1793 and was later guillotined by the advocates of revolutionary terror. An exceptional and rare D.S., Danton, two pages, large 10 x 12.5 folio, 25 x 32 cm, Paris, 20th August 1792, in French. The printed text is entitled `LOI´ (`LAW´), and states to the heading that the National Assembly decrees that `Le jour fixé pour honorer les mânes des victimes du despotisme dans la journée du 10, le drapeau pris sur les Suisses sera confié aux fédérés…´ (Translation : `On the day fixed to honour the souls of the victims of despotism on the day of the 10th, the flag taken from the Swiss will be entrusted to the federated…´) To a second paragraph, the Law text states `Au Nom de la Nation - Le Conseil Exécutif Provisoire mande & ordonne a tous les Corps administratifs & Tribunaux… lire, publier & afficher dans leurs départements… & exécuter comme loi…´ (Translation : `In the name of the Nation - the Provisional Executive Committee orders all Administrative Corps & Courts… to read, publish & display in their departments… & execute it as law…´) Signed by Danton in his capacity as Minister of Justice. Bearing to the second page and alongside Danton´s signature, a circular red ink stamp, showing a republican vignette with the text `Au Nom de la Republique Française´. Bearing also the signature `Roland´, by Jean Marie Roland de la Platiere (1734-1793), in his capacity as Minister of the Interior. Roland de la Platiere was a French inspector of manufactures in Lyon who became a leader of the Girondist faction during the French Revolution. Small overall age wear and creasing, mostly to edges, otherwise G Ten days before the present document was signed by Danton, he was appointed Minister of Justice, the day after the Storming of the Tuileries. Jean Marie Roland de la Platiere (1734-1793) Leader of the Girondist acts in the present document as Minister of the Interior. He was strongly influenced by his wife, Marie-Jeanne "Manon" Roland de la Platiere. When the Girondins assumed power, Roland found himself appointed Minister of the Interior on 23 March 1792, serving as Minister in King Louis XVI´s government. Although he dismissed shortly after, Roland de la Platiere was for a second time appointed Minister of Interior, the day after the Storming of the Tuileries, ten days before the present document was signed.
GREGOIRE HENRI: (1750-1831) Also known as Abbé Grégoire (''Abbot Gregoire''). French Catholic Priest, Abolitionist and revolutionary Leader, appointed President of the Convention. Rare A.L.S., `+Gregoire´, one page, small 8vo, Paris, 23rd March, n.y., to Marc-Antoine Jullien, Director of the Revue Encyclopédique, in French. Gregoire states in part `Mr. Julien aura dans le cours de la semaine prochaine un article sur le Diario, en lui renvoyant l´ouvrage je le prierai de me prêter les cahiers suivants à mesure qu´ils arriveront´ (Translation: `Mr. Julien will have an article in the Diario next week. When I return the work to him, I will ask him to lend me the following notebooks as they arrive´) The Abbey Gregoire further says `Quand je reçois des nouveautés littéraires, je ne manque pas de [vous] transmettre des notices, 0u par moi, ou par l'intermédiaire du Député Lanjuinais´ (Translation: `When I receive literary novelties, I do not fail to send you notices, either by me, or through the Deputy Lanjuinais´) With address leaf, with small area of paper loss to the bottom corner of the address leaf. ROUGET DE LISLE CLAUDE JOSEPH: (1760-1836) French military officer during the French Revolutionary Wars, author of the words and music for the French national anthem La Marseillaise. A.L.S., with his initials R.L., one page, 8vo, n.p., 'Mercredi 28' (28th May 1828), to Francois Mongin de Montrol, in French. Rouget de Lisle writes to his colleague to announce his upcoming arrival in Paris, 'depuis quelques jours....et j'y suis pour quelque temps, ou pour mieux dire, a poste fixe, car il est escrit que je dois y crever' (Translation: 'for a few days…..and I'm there for a while, or better said, in a fixed position, because it is written that I must die there'), continuing 'Je me trouve sous la main cette drogue que j'ai copiee pour vous. Je vous l'enverrais de suite si je n'imaginais que peut-etre n'aimeriez-vous pas qu'elle courut les champs a votre adresse' (Translation: 'I find at hand this drug that I copied for you [most likely the recipe for a medication] I would send it to you immediately if I did not imagine that perhaps you would not like it to run the fields to your address'), concluding by exclaiming 'Sargat Junior. Votre Mar.[seillaise?] vous attend. Si vous la voulez, venez la chercher. Il est bien rare que je sorte avant midi, ou une heure' (Translation: 'Sargat Junior. Your Mar.[seillaise?] is waiting for you. If you want it, come get it. It is very rare that I go out before noon, or one o'clock'). LANNES JEAN: (1769-1809) Marshal of France. Duc de Montebello. One of Napoleon's most daring and talented generals and personal friend of the Emperor. Rare A.L.S., `Lannes´, two pages, 4to, Lisbon, 19th July 1803, to Citizen Guéhéneuc, his father-in-law, General Administrator of the Forests, in Paris, in French. Lannes regrets that his previous letter reached his correspondent so late, stating in part `…que vous n´ayez reçu que bien tard les lettres de change, ma lettre et le paquet étaient dans un adréssé au Ministre des Relations… je suis impatient d´avoir une réponse de vous à cet égard…´ (Translation: "…that you have only received very late the letters of exchange, my letter and parcel were addressed to the Minister… I am impatient of receiving a response regarding this matter…") Lannes further refers to his pregnant wife, saying `…nous n´avons pas reçu de lettre de vous ni de Madame Guéhéneuc par ce courier…. Louise est prête à accoucher, je cherche une campagne aux environs de Lisbonne, à cause de la chaleur excessive de la capitale…´ (Translation: "…we have not received any letter from you nor from Madame Guéhéneuc… Louis is about to give birth, and I look for a countryside place in the surroundings of Lisbonne, because of the excessive heat at the capital…") With address leaf, bearing remnants of former seals. NAPOLEON I: (1769-1821) Emperor of the French 1804-14, 1815. An unusual, rare pen and ink drawing executed in Napoleon's hand, unsigned, on a small irregularly trimmed oblong 12mo piece (12 x 7 cm at its widest and highest points), n.p. (Longwood House, Saint Helena), n.d. (c.1816). In bold, dark fountain pen ink the exiled Emperor has drawn a neat series of abstract geometric doodles. The piece is also annotated in Napoleon's hand with around eight random words, in English, including left, on, can, call and the. An interesting and attractive piece demonstrating Napoleon's desire to master English. Neatly mounted to a slim oblong 8vo page removed from an album. About VG In his Le Memorial de Sainte-Helene the French cartographer and author Emmanuel, comte de Las Cases, who informally acted as Napoleon's secretary whilst the Emperor was exiled on Saint Helena, devotes several passages to Napoleon's wish to learn English, noting that on 16th January 1816 'At about three o'clock, the Emperor summoned me for conversation while he was washing and dressing….He happened to remark that it was scandalous that he could not yet read English….and then ordered me to force him to take a lesson every day'. The first lesson took place the following day, on 17th January, Las Cases observing 'Today the Emperor took his first English lesson. Since my main aim was to make him able to read the newspapers without difficulty, the first lesson consisted only in making him acquainted with an English gazette'. MOUNTBATTEN LOUIS: (1900-1979) British Admiral of World War II. A typed souvenir copy of the Instrument of Surrender of Japanese Forces under the Command or Control of the Supreme Commander, Japanese Expeditionary Forces, Southern Regions, within the Operational Theatre of the Supreme Allied Commander, South East Asia, two pages, 4to, originally signed at Singapore, 12th September 1945, this copy signed ('Louis Mountbatten, Admiral') by Mountbatten at the conclusion in black fountain pen ink and most likely dating from the 1970s. The document states, in part, that Field Marshal Count Terauchi 'does hereby surrender unconditionally to the Supreme Allied Commander, South East Asia (Admiral The Lord Louis Mountbatten) himself and all Japanese sea, ground, air and auxiliary forces under his command or control' and that Terauchi 'undertakes to ensure that all orders and instructions that may be issued from time to time by the Supreme Allied Commander…..are scrupulously and promptly obeyed by all Japanese sea, ground, air and auxiliary forces', further declaring that 'Any disobedience of, or delay or failure to comply with, orders or instructions issued by the Supreme Allied Commander….and any action which the Supreme Allied Commander…..may determine to be detrimental to the Allied Powers, will be dealt with as the Supreme Allied Commander, South East Asia may decide'. HANNAH JOHN: (1921-1947) Scottish Flight Sergeant of World War II, Victoria Cross winner for his actions over Antwerp, Belgium, 15th September 1940. At the age of eighteen years, Hannah was the youngest recipient of the Victoria Cross for aerial operations and the youngest for World War II. An extremely rare A.L.S., J Hannah V.C. (Sgt)., one page, 8vo, Sergeants Mess, RAF Cottesmore, Rutland, 7th July 1941, to Raymond Blunden. Hannah apologises for not being able to oblige his correspondent with a photograph, explaining 'I have had so many requests I have run out of supplies and can't get any more owing to rationing of certain substances'. Autographs of Hannah are extremely rare in any form as a result of his untimely death at the age of 25. Some light creasing and minor age wear to the corners, otherwise VG
GIBSON GUY: (1918-1944) British airman of World War II, Wing Commander of 617 Squadron. Victoria Cross winner for his actions during Operation Chastise (The Dambusters Raid) on the Mohne and Eder Dams in Germany, 16th May 1943. An excellent, rare dark fountain pen ink signature ('Guy P Gibson') on a 12mo (8 x 11 cm) page removed from an autograph album. Some very light, minor show through from the ink verse and signature to the verso, dated 25th August 1943 and in the hand of an unidentified individual (most likely a friend or relative of the album's original owner). Accompanied by a limited edition 10 x 8 monochrome print of Gibson's Lancaster by artist Robert Taylor. Matted in light grey to an overall size of 12.5 x 10.5. MONNET JEAN: (1888-1979) French civil servant, diplomat, administrator and political visionary who played a significant role as a representative of France, and adviser to Winston S. Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt, during World War II. An influential supporter of European unity during the 1950s, Monnet is considered one of the founding fathers of the European Union and is often looked upon as the 'Father of Europe' in recognition of his pioneering and innovative concepts. An extremely rare and historically important World War II date A.L.S., Jean Monnet, three pages, 4to, n.p., 25th September 1943 ('samedi soir'), to Henri Giraud ('Mon General'), in French. Monnet makes an impassioned plea to Giraud, 'En cette heure grave je viens vous prier de reconsiderer votre decision et de demeurer avec nous' (Translation: 'In the grave hour I come to ask you to reconsider your decision and to remain with us') and continues to set out his reasons, 'Je comprends mieux que personne l'amertume que peut vous donner la forme desagreable des relations entre certains membres du Comite. Je comprends aussi que parfois vous soyez las d'avoir toujours a soutenir des debats penibles. Mais nous sommes arrives au point ou la liberation de la France est prochaine. Il nous faut sans perdre une minute ni un gramme de nos forces preparer la rentree en France. Pour cela je suis convaincu que, entre autres, cinq questions sont essentielles: organiser le travail du Comite afin qu'il prepare enfin utilement toutes les mesures que nous devons prevoir et prendre pour la rentree en France; que nous precisions et fassions reconnaitre definitivement la responsabilite collective du Comite; que vous vous concentriez sur votre role de Commandant en chef sans etre tenu par une tache administrative; que nous precisions comment sera nommee l'assemblee provisoire qui nommera la Gouvernement Provisoire; qu'enfin nous precisions notre politique vis-a-vis de nos allies. L'objet des dispositions soumises au Comite etait de preciser les trois premieres questions. J'ai vote pour les mesures proposees car dans leur ensemble je les crois bonnes. Ainsi que je vous l'ai dit voici de longs mois je suis convaincu que le Commandent en chef des troupes francaises jouera un role allie essential lorsque les troupes alliees et francaises rentreont en France. Pour que la France ait le benefice complet de cette position il faut que le Commandant en chef soit vous' (Translation: 'I understand better than anyone the bitterness that the disagreeable form of relations between certain members of the Committee can give you. I also understand that sometimes your tired of always having to sustain painful debates. But we have reached the point where the liberation of France is near. We must, without wasting a minute or a gram of our forces, prepare for the return to France. For this I am convinced that, among others, five questions are essential: to organise the work of the Committee so that it finally prepares usefully all the measures that we must plan and take for the return of France; that we specify and have the Committee's collective responsibility definitively recognised; that you concentrate on your role as Commander-in-Chief without being bound by an administrative task; that we specify how the provisional assembly which will appoint the Provisional Government will be named; that finally we clarify our policy vis-à-vis our allies. The purpose of the provisions submitted to the Committee was to clarify the first three questions. I voted for the proposed measures because overall I believe them to be good. As I told you many months ago, I am convinces that the Commander-in-Chief of the French troops will play an essential allied role when the allied and French troops return to France. For France to have the full benefit of this position, the Commander-in-Chief must be you'). Monnet concludes his letter with a particular appeal to Giraud, 'Maintenant permettez-moi de vous dire un mot personnel, car plus que qui que ce soit je suis votre compagnon de la premiere heure dans cette enterprise de l'unite francaise, et je sais que vous et moi n'avons qu'une seule pensee: servir la France: mon general, quelles que soient les deceptions des mois derniers, il nous faut demeurer a nos postes; il nous faut maintenir debout le Comite, et il nous faut conduire l'armee francaise. Je vous supplie de nas pas rendre votre decision definitive' (Translation: 'Now allow me to say a personal word to you, because more than anyone I am your companion from the start in this enterprise of French unity, and I know that you and I have only one thought: to serve France. My general, whatever the disappointments of the last months, we must remain at our posts; we must keep the Committee standing, and we must lead the French army. I beg you not to make your decision final'). A letter of truly exceptional content and excellent association written at an important moment for France during World War II. About EXHenri Giraud (1879-1949) French General and a leader of the French Free Forces during World War II.The committee to which Monnet refers in the present letter was the French Committee of National Liberation, formed by the French Generals Giraud and Charles de Gaulle on 3rd June 1943, as a provisional government of Free France. The purpose of the committee was to provide united leadership and to organise and coordinate the campaign to liberate France from Nazi Germany. Giraud and de Gaulle served jointly as co-presidents of the committee, which was based in Algiers, although the two men did not always see eye to eye (just as Monnet and de Gaulle experienced a multifaceted relationship). Eventually de Gaulle politically outmanoeuvred Giraud, asserting complete control and leadership, and in November 1943 the committee came under the chairmanship of de Gaulle. With a loss of support, Giraud retired in frustration in April 1944.The liberation of France would begin with Operation Overlord on 6th June 1944 (D-Day).
MOULIN JEAN: (1899-1943) French civil servant who served as the first President of the National Council of the Resistance during World War II and is remembered as one of the main heroes of the French Resistance. A rare, brief World War II date A.N.S., Jean Moulin, to one side of his printed correspondence card as Prefect of the Eure-et-Loir department, n.p. (Chartres?), 9th January 1940, to a friend, in French. Moulin writes, in full, 'Entendu, cher ami, je fais une nouvelle demarche' (Translation: 'Understood, dear friend, I'm taking a new step'). With a pencil annotation and date in an unidentified hand to the lower left corner. [EISENHOWER DWIGHT D.]: (1890-1969) American General of World War II. American President 1953-61. HORROCKS BRIAN (1895-1985) British Lieutenant-General of World War II, commander of the XXX Corps in Operation Market Garden. Autograph Manuscript, unsigned, one page, 4to, n.p., n.d. (c.1952). The manuscript, penned in blue fountain pen ink (and with a few pencil corrections), is an appreciation of Dwight D. Eisenhower and states, in part, 'General Eisenhower is a warm and friendly man with a most persuasive manner; one of those rare beings who has risen to the supreme heights and yet remained at heart a simple person. It is these qualities allied to his complete selflessness which have made him so popular, and no one can remain in his presence for long without succumbing to his charm. Even the British soldiers who do not as a rule take kindly to "foreign" Generals knew him affectionately as Ike. He has been accused of being pro-British, be that as it may, there is no doubt at all that the British are pro-Eisenhower……But no one can rise to be the commander of the military forces of the free Western world on charm alone and after a few minutes in his company it is soon obvious that behind his charming personality lie many sterling qualities. He is a man of the highest possible moral courage and having once decided on what is the right thing to do nothing will deflect him from his course. For a General he has a remarkably shrewd political sense which is particularly important in his present appointment……There have been rumours in connection with the next Presidential election in the U.S.A: we must all pray that these are untrue and implore our friends across the Atlantic to add one last thing to their generous Marshall Aid, by leaving us IKE. O'HARE EDWARD: (1914-1943) American Lieutenant Commander, a naval aviator of the United States Navy during World War II who became the Navy's first fighter ace of the war, and also the first naval aviator recipient of the Medal of Honor in World War II. An extremely rare pencil signature ('E H O'Hare') on an irregular neatly clipped 12mo card (approx. 11 x 7.5 cm), with three partial lines of text in ink, in an unidentified hand, above, 'for your success as a naval aviator - may all your wishes be fulfilled'. Autographs of O'Hare are extremely rare in any form as a result of his being killed in action at the young age of 29. Lightly affixed to the base of an A4 sheet of photographic paper featuring an image of O'Hare in a half-length pose wearing his United States Navy ensign's uniform. A Meissen Onion pattern service, comprising a rare pair of two tier figural cake stands surmounted by boy and girl finials (40cms high), 18 plates with lattice rim (23.5cms diameter), 3 large comports with lattice rim (22.5cms high), and 4 dishes with lattice rim (one 23cms across, 3 22cms across. Each with Meissen crossed swords marks in underglaze blue. (27). *Condition: Figural cake stands, both seem generally fine, boy has a couple of tiny nibbles to the flowers he is holding. Three comports, one has a small section missing from the rim and a crack running from it. The other two seem fine. Dishes, one broken and stapled, one has a hairline crack from rim (5cms long), two seem fine with one having a small nick to the footrim. Plates, one with a small chip to the rim, one with small firing cracks to the footrim, one with two small chips to the rim, one with small firing crack to the rim, one with various chips to the footrim, one with three small chips to the footrim, one with three small chips to the rim and small hairlines, one with a small chip to the rim and chips to the footrim, one with a small hairline to the back of the rim, the others seem generally fine.
